This is a Vector data set. It contains the following vector data types (SDTS terminology):
Horizontal positions are specified in geographic coordinates, that is, latitude and longitude. Latitudes are given to the nearest 0.00028. Longitudes are given to the nearest 0.00028. Latitude and longitude values are specified in decimal degrees.
The horizontal datum used is North American Datum of 1927.
The ellipsoid used is Clarke 1866.
The semi-major axis of the ellipsoid used is 6378206.400000.
The flattening of the ellipsoid used is 1/294.978698.

The data were collected during dozens of cruises by the National Ocean Service to investigate the sediment type and water depths of areas of interest in United States waters.

Data sources used in this process:
Statistical data was digitized by hand at the Smithsonian Institution. At the USGS, the data were viewed in a GIS to determine samples with unlikely locations. In addition, at the University of Colorado, data were passed through a velocity filter to identify samples with notable distances between sequential data points; these samples were tagged. Each tagged sample was manually corrected as possible by comparing the degree and/or minute of location to those within the same cruise ID and day; this affected about 700 samples. Approximately 4300 samples have no location, nonspecific location information, or unresolvably inconsistent locations. These data are not included in the outputs of usSEABED. Where appropriate, data were tested for completeness using MS Excel.
Navigational techniques not recorded in report; latitudes and longitudes given in degrees, minutes, seconds.
Water depth determination technique not noted in report. Water depths given in meters.
Data are incomplete, as some are missing sampler information and probably not all data have been digitized by the Smithsonian.
Some data do not pass the location test.
