The International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences (ISAES) is held once every four years to provide an international forum for presenting research results and new ideas and for planning future Antarctic geoscience research projects. The 10th ISAES coincides with the International Polar Year (IPY; 50th Anniversary of the International Geophysical Year) and has been structured to showcase the great breadth of geoscience research being done in Antarctic regions by more than more than 100 institutions located in over 30 countries. The science program of the Symposium encompasses six broad themes that cover key topics on evolution and interactions of the geosphere, cryosphere and biosphere and their cross-linkages with past and historic paleoclimates. Emphasis is also on deciphering the climate records in ice cores, geologic cores, rock outcrops and those inferred from climate models, as Antarctica has gone from a “greenhouse world” to an “icehouse world.” New technologies for the coming decades of geoscience data collection are also highlighted. Ten keynote presentations at the symposium outline the foundation for the research sessions of the symposium and the structure of the Proceedings publications for the 10th ISAES.

The ISAES is traditionally a cornerstone meeting for the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), and has a valued history of research publications with comprehensive ISAES Proceedings Volumes.

In recognition of the 10th ISAES being held in the U.S. for the first time in 30 years and during IPY, the publication of the symposium proceedings is being handled as a special collaborative effort of the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Geological Survey, The National Academies Polar Research Board and The National Academies Press. The National Academies Polar Research Board oversees the activities of SCAR in the U.S.

Special attention has been directed at publication formats for the symposium, to expedite the open and wide sharing of mature and preliminary research results presented in talks and posters at the 10th ISAES. All symposium presentations are documented by a short summary printed in the Symposium Program Book, and 337 presentations (88% of the total given) are accompanied by a short research paper, an extended abstract or a full-length research paper. The research papers, extended abstracts and meeting workshop reports of the 10th ISAES are compiled in this Online Proceedings and are replicated on a DVD-ROM placed in the back of the 10th ISAES Proceedings book. The Proceedings book contains printed copies of the Symposium summary paper and 10 keynote papers, based on talks given at the symposium.

The research papers and extended abstracts have been handled differently. Research papers present mature research results and syntheses. They have been peer-reviewed using standard journal procedures. Following revisions and acceptances by co-editors, the short research papers were formatted for publication and proofread by authors. The keynote papers were copyedited and formatted by The National Academies Press. Each research paper has been assigned a Digital Object Identification (DOI) number and separate html link, and posted in the Online Proceedings. Digital copies of keynote papers that are in the Proceedings book are also included in the Online Proceedings to assure open and wide access to the research results.

Extended abstracts focus on preliminary research results and have not been peer reviewed. They have had only minimal editorial review and revision. Authors formatted and proofread their papers. Extended abstracts were not given DOI numbers and are included together in a separate chapter of the Online Proceedings.

Special meetings and workshops were held in conjunction with the 10th ISAES. Several of the reports from these meetings and workshops are included in the Online Proceedings, to help document new and ongoing projects in the geoscience community. The meeting and workshop reports have not been peer reviewed.

A team 34 co-editors coordinated with the numerous authors and peer reviewers in handling the many research papers and extended abstracts that are included herein. USGS publications staff and a Stanford University editorial assistant indexed and compiled the PDF versions of the short research papers and extended abstracts for the online Proceedings. USGS staff created the master DVD-ROM, with replica of the 10th ISAES Online Proceedings, that is in the 10th ISAES Proceedings Book published by The National Academies Press in April 2008. Handling the large volume of short research papers and extended abstracts, to organize them for the symposium science program and to have them all online before the symposium ended, was made possible by using the online abstract/manuscript handling system of Conference Exchange (

The Online Proceedings for the 10th ISAES showcase the great breadth of geoscience research at the time of IPY, and illustrate the great success of this research in preserving the spirit of collaboration, data-sharing, and use of Antarctica as a “continent for science” as intended by the Antarctic Treaty that was implemented at the close of IGY.


The 10th ISAES was held under the auspices of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, and we thank SCAR for their ongoing support of these Antarctic geoscience symposia. Creating the special International Polar Year volumes for the 10th ISAES, with Online and Book Proceedings, over a three and a half year period involved over 1200 people, most on a volunteer basis, in more than 34 countries, including over 950 authors, 34 editors and editorial staff, 220 peer-reviewers, 23 members of the International and Local Organizing Committees and their staff, and many managers and staff from the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, The National Academies Polar Research Board, U.S. Geological Survey, National Science Foundation, The National Academies Press, Conference Exchange, Stanford University, and University of California Santa Barbara. These people and institutions are warmly thanked for their varied contributions to this successful undertaking.
