A compilation of spatial digital databases for selected U.S. Geological Survey nonfuel mineral resource assessments for parts of Idaho and Montana
Description:
Abstract:
Maps from several U.S. Geological Survey 3-part mineral resource assessments (previously published in paper and/or digital format) of specific areas in Idaho and Montana were converted to standardized spatial databases of mineral potential (in ESRI ArcGIS). These datasets include the original assessment descriptions of mineral potential for the Absaroka-Beartooth area within the Custer and Gallatin national forests in Montana and the Helena National Forest area in Montana.
Purpose:
These digital geospatial databases were created by the U.S. Geological Survey as an ongoing effort to provide mineral resource information for use in spatial analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
This metadata file provides information for the two placer gold datasets that only contain line data (abplacaug and hnfauplag) included in this publication. A "master" metadata file was imported into each individual spatial dataset (ArcInfo coverage); once imported, the metadata was NOT edited to remove entries that did not occur in or comments that did not apply to the specific dataset.

The spatial data should be displayed and analyzed at an appropriate scale of 1:126,720 or smaller (for example, 1:150,000). In other words, the datasets are not meant to be used or displayed at any scale larger than 1:126,720 (for example, 1:100,000 or 1:24,000). Any hardcopies utilizing these datasets shall clearly indicate their source. If the user has modified the data in any way they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on the hardcopy map. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent these datasets, nor imply that changes they made were approved by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attribute accuracy was verified by manual comparison of the source maps with hard copy plots, printouts, and on-screen evaluation.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Line segments are a set of sequentially numbered coordinate pairs. No duplicate features exist nor duplicate points in a data string. Intersecting lines are separated into individual line segments at the point of intersection. All nodes are represented by a single coordinate pair which indicates the beginning or end of a line segment.
Completeness_Report:
Many, but not all, of the 3-part assessments (which are based on the type of mineral deposit) from several publications by the U.S. Geological Survey are presented in a GIS format in this report. Energy resource assessments are not included in this product.

Tysdal and others (1996) provided locations and descriptions for placer gold deposits in the Helena National Forest area.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
For each study area, a separate spatial database was created for each deposit type assessed. These digital mineral resource spatial databases are comprised of vector data (lines only) that delineate mineral resource potential. Several methods were used to capture the data (digitizing; scanning and vectorizing; or converting the data from other formats, for example, GSMAP) to process it in an ESRI ArcInfo coverage format. The data were then converted to standardized spatial databases in ArcInfo, and data from the various source publications were added as needed; thus, each spatial database has a consistent set of arc attributes stored in feature attribute tables. Paper plots were printed from the digital files and compared to the original maps as a quality control step to check for digitizing and attributing errors. Each dataset was converted from its original map projection to geographic coordinates for ease of use in a variety of GIS applications.

The USGS 3-part quantitative assessment method was used to assess the mineral resource potential. It consists of 1) delineating areas according to the types of deposits permitted by the geology; 2) estimating the amount of resources contained in the undiscovered deposits using appropriate ore characteristics and metal contents defined by worldwide grade and tonnage models, and 3) estimating the number of undiscovered deposits of each type for each delineated stream segment.
