A compilation of spatial digital databases for selected U.S. Geological Survey nonfuel mineral resource assessments for parts of Idaho and Montana
Description:
Abstract:
Maps from several U.S. Geological Survey non-3-part mineral resource assessments (previously published in paper and/or digital format) of specific areas in Idaho and Montana were converted to standardized spatial databases of mineral potential (in ESRI ArcGIS). These datasets include the original asssessment descriptions of mineral potential for the Butte, Challis, Choteau, Dillon, and Wallace 1:250,000-scale quadrangles and the Challis National Forest.
Purpose:
These digital geospatial databases were created by the U.S. Geological Survey as an ongoing effort to provide mineral resource information for use in spatial analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
This metadata file provides information for ALL of the non-3-part assessment vector GIS included in this publication. A "master" metadata file was imported into each individual spatial dataset (ArcInfo coverage); once imported, the metadata was NOT edited to remove entries that did not occur in or comments that did not apply to the specific dataset.

Use_Constraints:
The data should be displayed and analyzed at an appropriate scale of 1:250,000 or smaller (for example, 1:500,000). In other words, the spatial databases for the non-3-part mineral resource assessments are not meant to be used or displayed at any scale larger than 1:250,000 (for example, 1:100,000 or 1:62,500). Any hardcopies utilizing these datasets shall clearly indicate their source. If the user has modified the data in any way they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on the hardcopy map. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent these datasets, nor imply that changes they made were approved by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attribute accuracy was verified by manual comparison of the source maps with hard copy plots, printouts, and on-screen evaluation.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Polygon and chain-node topology present. Segments making up the outer and inner boundaries of a polygon tie end-to-end to completely enclose the area. Line segments are a set of sequentially numbered coordinate pairs. No duplicate features exist nor duplicate points in a data string. Intersecting lines are separated into individual line segments at the point of intersection. All nodes are represented by a single coordinate pair which indicates the beginning or end of a line segment.
Completeness_Report:
Many, but not all, of the non-3-part assessments (which are based on the type of mineral deposit) from several publications by the U.S. Geological Survey are presented in a GIS format in this report. Energy resource assessments are not included in this product.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The horizontal positional accuracy of the line and polygon features varies: it is dependent on the original scale of the topographic maps used as base maps in mapping the geology (which was subsequently used to delineate the mineral resource tracts).

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
For each study area, a separate spatial database was created for each deposit type assessed. These digital mineral resource spatial databases are comprised of vector data (polygons and lines) that delineate mineral resource potential. Several methods were used to capture the data (for example, digitizing; scanning and vectorizing) to process them in an ESRI ArcInfo coverage format. The data were then converted to standardized spatial databases in ArcInfo, and study area boundaries for the 1:250,000-scale quadrangle assessments were mathematically generated in ArcInfo and combined with the appropriate datasets; thus, each spatial database has a consistent set of polygon and arc attributes stored in feature attribute tables. Paper plots were printed from the digital files and compared to the original maps as a quality control step to check for digitizing and attributing errors. Finally, each dataset was converted from its original map projection to geographic coordinates for ease of use in a variety of GIS applications.

Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
The general procedure for the non 3-part assessments was as follows: 1) Geologic, geochemical, geophysical, and other data pertinent to the occurrence of mineral deposits was collected and compiled; 2) The types of mineral deposits that exist and could exist in the study area was determined; 3) For each deposit type, descriptive models and recognition criteria were developed or applied. Recognition criteria are geologic parameters that affect the favorability for the presence of a mineral deposit; 4) The areal distribution and relative importance of recognition criteria were evaluated. This resulted in the delineation of areas where undiscovered deposits could occur; and 5) The mineral potential was assessed based on the presence and relative importance of recognition criteria. In this step, the areas delineated in step 4 were ranked according to their favorability for the occurrence of undiscovered mineral deposits. Levels of potential were defined independently for each study area; the definitions for terms indicating favorability were not systematized until late in the program. The assessments do not explicitly indicate how much undiscovered resource may be present.
