Abstract:
In the summer of 2005, more than 14 hours of both vertical and oblique georeferenced submarine digital video was collected in the Santa Barbara Channel for (1) ground-truth existing geophysical data (bathymetry and acoustic reflectance), (2) examine and record geologic characteristics of the sea floor, and (3) investigate the relation between substrate types and benthic communities, and (4) construct predictive maps of seafloor geomorphology and habitat distribution. Common substrates observed include rock, boulders, cobbles, and sand.

Purpose:
These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. The data can be used with geographic information systems (GIS) software to display geologic and oceanographic information.

Processing for all habitat polygon regions:

1.  ArcGIS "Create Signatures Tool":
    Created signature polygon file
      by identifying areas of verified (through video observation)
      hard, mixed, and soft bottom.
    Used 7 layer in the in the "stack" of files to create signatures.
    Layers included:
      -euclidean distance grid of track lines.
      -mosaiced backscatter at 2 meter resolution
      -enthropy from backscatter at 2 meter resolution
      -homogeneity of backscatter at 2 meter resolution
      -rugosity (derived from mosaiced bathy
         using the "Benthic Terrain Modeling Tool's Rugosity Builder")
      -enthropy from backscatter at half meter resolution
      -homogeneity of backscatter at half meter resolution

2.  Using the output from the first round of the ArcGIS "Create Signatures Tool",
      added 2 additional classes: nadir rock and nadir mixed.
    Used same above 7 layers and re-ran "Create Signatures Tool".
    Using the new output file, assigned classes nadir rock and nadir mixed
      to signature "soft".

3.  Converted 3 class grid to polygon.
    Decreased number of polygon attributes by grouping polygons
      of like classification if polygons area less or equal to 10 sq meters.
    Added all Green habitat code (1999) ID and definition columns to polygons.
    Used select by attribute, location, and manual tools
      to query and assign Green habitat code attributes.
