PRELIMINARY IMAGE MAP OF THE 2007 SANTIAGO FIRE PERIMETER, TUSTIN QUADRANGLE, ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA By Perry S. Clark, Wendy S. Scratch, Gaylord W. Bias, Gregory B. Stander, Jenne L. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Geological Survey created 55 image maps over the five major areas burned by the October 2007 wildfires in southern California. These maps were created for response planning using best available pre-fire aerial photography. Each image map covers approximately 49 square miles, the same as its matching USGS topographic map. The USGS topographic maps are available as lithographic prints and in digital form from the USGS Store and can be accessed at: http://store.usgs.gov/ The USGS, through its National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC), is in the process of developing a 7.5-minute quadrangle-based image-map product. The future new image-map product and these 55 California Fire Perimeter maps are an enhanced, layered, digital map product being delivered in a geo-registered Portable Document Format (PDF) or GeoPDF™ file. These GeoPDFs are layered allowing the user to turn off and on separate map layers in the document when viewing or printing in Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Pro. The GeoPDF also allows users with the free GeoPDF Toolbar from TerraGo Technologies to view the maps with multiple coordinate displays that users can configure independently to display coordinate values in various coordinate systems using various map projections, and datums. Users can also measure length and area, and perform GPS tracking. These GeoPDF’s are also GeoMark and Adobe Reader enabled extending functionality out to users. This allows users to add notes and other mark-ups using Adobe tools, and with the GeoPDF toolbar users can add notes, stamps, and other mark-ups that have geospatial intelligence, which can be exported as .shp or .kml geospatial files for use in a GIS. Users can also import .shp, .kml, and .gpx geospatial files with the GeoPDF Toolbar. This product contains Portable Document Format files, which require Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Acrobat Pro, or the free Adobe Reader for viewing and printing. The Adobe Reader is available for free download at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html To take advantage of the PDF’s geospatial qualities, TerraGo Technologies offers a free GeoPDF toolbar plug-in for the Adobe Acrobat, Acrobat Pro, or Adobe Reader versions 6.x or 7.x or 8.x, available at: http://www.terragotech.com/solutions/geopdftoolbar.php (Currently available for Windows only). These preliminary image maps showing the areas affected by the 2007 California wildfires are identified as such by a note in the map collar below the national map accuracy statement. The data depicting the fire perimeters was obtained from the GEOMAC website at: http://geomac.usgs.gov/. To enhance the readability of the text, USGS experimented with halo text. In an effort to keep file sizes to a minimum and resolution to a maximum, USGS tested different export parameters and file compression software. As a result, the file size of the California fire maps ranges between eight-MB and 46MB, with most maps falling in the 30MB to 46MB range. Resolution of the image is approximately two-meters on the ground, allowing the integrity of the image to be maintained close to 400 percent zoom ratio. Beyond 400 percent the image begins to degrade. The date of the pre-fire imagery is 2005. II.
