Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
Coral reef ecosystem management must occur across multiple spatial scales and habitat types. This project sought variables that were easily measured over large areas and correlated well with reef resources. Ten patch reefs in Biscayne National Park, Florida, USA, were surveyed remotely using the NASA Experimental Advanced Airborne Research Lidar (EAARL) and reef fish populations were visually surveyed at independent, randomly selected stations. Rugosity was determined at each station both by using the traditional chain-transect method on a 10m scale and remotely using the EAARL submarine topography data at multiple spatial scales (2m, 5m, and 10m). In situ surveyed data found in this shapefile include benthic percent cover data, substratum cover data, gorgonian abundance and volume, and fish abundance with specific counts for Acanthurids (surgeonfish), Scarids (parrotfish), Lutjanids (snappers), Haemulids (grunts), Groupers, and Damselfish.
Purpose:
To study the ability of lidar to assess topographical complexity to predict reef fish and benthic community structure on shallow patch reefs in Biscayne National Park, FL, USA.
