Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of the Massachusetts coastline, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from the combined single-beam and multibeam echo-sounder data and sidescan-sonar data collected in the vicinity of Edgartown Harbor, Massachusetts. During August 2008 seismic-reflection profiles (Boomer and Chirp) were acquired, and during September 2008 bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of two ground-truth reconnaissance surveys.
Purpose:
To release the Boomer seismic profiles collected to ground-truth acoustic data (combined single-beam and multibeam bathymetry and sidescan-sonar imagery) collected during NOAA hydrographic survey H11346. The Boomer data were collected to interpret the deeper stratigraphy beneath Edgartown Harbor.

High-resolution Boomer seismic-reflection data were collected August 20 aboard the Research Vessel Rafael. The seismic data were acquired digitally along 5 lines totaling approximately 27.6 km with a GeoAcoustics Boomer source, GeoAcoustics power supply, Benthos AQ4 single-channel streamer, and Chesapeake Systems SonarWiz v4.03.0089 acquisition software. The Boomer was fired at a rate of 0.5 seconds at a power output of 175 joules. The received signal was filtered between 100-3000 Hz with a Geopulse receiver. The trace data recorded for 266 ms with a sample rate of 0.533 ms in standard SEG-Y format.

A Unix shell script was run that used Seismic Unix v4.0 to read the SEG-Y files and plot the data as 8-bit gray scale Postscript files using the Seismic Unix 'psimage' algorithm at a scale of 4.16 ms per inch and 100 traces per inch. This data set includes boomer seismic-reflection data in SEG-Y and JPEG formats collected along 5 lines in the vicinity of Edgartown, offshore Massachusetts. The seismic data were collected during USGS survey 08034, conducted August 18-20, 2008. Each profile is available as a binary file in Society of Exploration Geophysicists SEG-Y rev 1 format. A SEG-Y file consists of 1) a 3200-byte file identification record of EBCDIC encoded general information; 2) a 400-byte binary record with information such as sample rate and record length specific to the data set; and 3) multiple records, one seismic reflection trace per record. Each trace record is preceded by a 240-byte "trace header" containing information such as trace number and acquisition day and time specific to each trace. The trace data are represented as a time series of unitless 32-bit IEEE real numbers proportional to the reflection coefficient. The SEG-Y file is useful only if you have access to specialized software designed to process and display seismic reflection data.
