- Abstract:
- The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the
Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM), is producing
detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally
collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental
framework for research and management activities along this part of the
Massachusetts coastline, shows the composition and terrain of the
seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic
habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from the combined
single-beam and multibeam echo-sounder data and sidescan-sonar data
collected in the vicinity of Edgartown Harbor, Massachusetts. During
August 2008 seismic-reflection profiles (Boomer and Chirp) were
acquired, and during September 2008 bottom photographs and surficial
sediment data were acquired as part of two ground-truth reconnaissance
surveys.

Edgartown Harbor, offshore Massachusetts in geographic, WGS84. The
Boomer data were collected to interpret the deeper stratigraphy beneath

towed astern and to the port side of the RV Rafael on the water
surface. The single-channel hydrophone streamer was towed astern and to
the starboard side and approximately 0.5 meters below the water
surface. The layback offset was accounted for in the positional data
recorded in the SEG-Y headers. The layback position was 8 meters aft of
the vessel. Navigation went down between 16:08:06 and 16:12:13, so line
file 3 is interpolated.

- High-resolution Boomer seismic-reflection data were
collected August 20 aboard the Research Vessel Rafael. The seismic data
were acquired digitally along 5 lines totaling approximately 27.6 km
with a GeoAcoustics Boomer source, GeoAcoustics power supply, Benthos
AQ4 single-channel streamer, and Chesapeake Systems SonarWiz v4.03.0089
acquisition software. The Boomer was fired at a rate of 0.5 seconds at
a power output of 175 joules. The received signal was filtered between
100-3000 Hz with a GeoPulse receiver. The trace data recorded for 266
ms with a sample rate of 0.533 ms in standard SEG-Y format.

- A script was run that used Seismic Unix 4.0 to read
the SEG-Y files and extract shot number, horizontal position, year,
day, and time of day from the header. AWK was used to parse the ASCII
data and convert position in seconds of arc to decimal degrees. The
ASCII file was filtered using Linux "sort" to keep only the unique
horizontal positions output to a comma-delimited text file.
