Purpose: The purpose is to depict the extent of surficial geologic materials across the Roanoke Rapids quadrangle. It contains information for assessing and protecting aquifers, assessing water quality, and providing a framework for evaluating hazards and resources. Supplemental_Information: The database is accompanied by a large-format color map. Geometry is topologically clean. Completeness_Report: Geologic contacts and information were garnered from 1:24,000-scale mapping of surficial material based on observation from auger holes and cores in the region. The geologic contacts and location of subsurface information were approximated using this information. Additional information on the location of approximated contacts was delineated during compilation of the 1:100,000-scale map using LiDAR at later stages of compilation. The geologic contacts and information might change if additional outcrops are discovered or exposed as the natural land changes or as the result of development. The features in the database are not based on legal parcels or definitions. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Data were created on a USGS 7.5-minute topographic map at 1:24,000 scale. Therefore, the horizontal accuracy is assumed to be within National Map Accuracy Standards, with a horizontal accuracy of 45.6 feet at the 95% confidence level. Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The data were delineated on a USGS 7.5-minute topographic map at 1:24,000 scale. Therefore, the vertical accuracy is assumed to be within National Map Accuracy Standards, with a vertical accuracy of 11.9 feet at the 95% confidence level. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Geology was mapped by Robert E. Weems with the help of William C. Lewis at a scale of 1:24,000 on 1:24,000-scale maps located in the region. This information was scanned at 300dpi and georegistered in ArcGIS ArcInfo 9.1. The 1:24,000 scale maps were placed over the 1:100,000-scale topographic base map separations and hand digitized to fit on the 1:100,000-scale topographic basemap. LiDAR was used during the later stages of digitizing to refine geologic contacts and information; generally all contacts are approximate. Polygon, line, and point information from ArcGIS was exported to Adobe Illustrator CS3 for additional layout flexibility after full completion of the geospatial database.
