Purpose: To depict the extent of bedrock and surficial geologic materials across the area of the Shenandoah National Park Region. The dataset contains information for assessing and protecting aquifers, assessing water quality, providing a framework for evaluating hazards and resources, and for recreation and scientific interests. Supplemental_Information: The database is accompanied by a large-format color map and explanatory pamphlet. Geometry is topologically clean. Completeness_Report: The geologic contacts and information in this dataset might change if additional outcrops are discovered or exposed as the natural land changes or as the result of development. The features in the database are not based on legal parcels or definitions. It should be noted that all geologic units and contacts in this dataset are approximate based on the prevelance of vegetation and other surface cover. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Geology was mapped by Scott Southworth and others at a scale of 1:50,000 on 1:24,000-scale maps located in the region. This information was then compiled on mylar and scanned at 300dpi and georegistered in ArcGIS ArcInfo 9.3. ArcScan for ArcGIS was then used to autovectorize the information on the mylar(s) directly into Geodatabase feature datasets/classes with corresponding topology objects. The information was then checked to remove gaps, overlaps, pseudos, and dangles. Polygon, line, and point information was then attributed and ArcGIS ArcInfo was used to complete the cartography for export into Adobe Illustrator CS3/CS4 for additional layout flexibility and "polishing" after full completion of the geospatial database.
