This shapefile was developed using Digital Ortho Quarter Quadrangles (DOQQs) and Experimental Advanced Airborne Research Lidar(EAARL) Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) collected in 2007. Coincident with several other layers the shapefile gives a complete geologic representation of Gulf Islands National Seashore, Mississippi. Purpose: To geologically classify the vegetated barrier flats of Gulf Islands National Seashore, Mississippi, and to provide a viable land management tool for National Park Service scientists and personnel. Supplemental_Information: These classifications were developed using data collected in 2007, including aerial photographs, low-altitude color video, and EAARL data. Classifications were then defined in an ERDAS Imagine format raster image. The Imagine file was then converted to a shapefile using ArcMap. Acknowledgement of the USGS, St. Petersburg Science Center as a data source would be appreciated in products developed from these data, and such acknowledgement as is standard for citation and legal practices for data source is expected by users of this data. Sharing new data layers, developed directly from these data, would also be appreciated by the USGS staff. Users should be aware that comparisons with other data sets for the same area from other time periods may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from changes in photo interpretation, mapping conventions, and digital processes over time. Security_Information: Security_Classification_System: Unclassified Security_Classification: Unclassified Security_Handling_Description: Unclassified Native_Data_Set_Environment: Microsoft Windows XP Version 5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 3; ESRI ArcCatalog 9.2.6.1500, ERDAS Imagine 9.1 Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Due to these data being created from three sources; September 2007 high-resolution orthorectified aerial photography from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP), October 2007 low-altitude color videos of the Mississippi barrier islands acquired from Great Divide pictures under contract to the NPS, and June 2007 EAARL data collected by NASA and the USGS, some areas will be more accurate than others. While most of the data are referenced to 0.6-meter resolution aerial photography taken in 2007 and 1.0-meter EAARL surveys taken in 2007, geospatial analysis may have resulted in inaccuracies up to 5 meters. Logical_Consistency_Report: This shapefile is part of a layer series and only contains areas on Gulf Islands National Seashore, Mississippi, classified as a vegetated barrier flat. Classifications are based upon 2007 EAARL DEMs and 2007 RGB DOQQs. Errors and inconsistencies were removed first by visual analysis and then by a clump and eliminate analysis and a neighborhood analysis in ERDAS Imagine. Completeness_Report: Classifications are constrained by the NPS, Gulf Islands National Seashore boundary. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Boundaries are generalized and may have a spatial drift of as little as 0.6 meters or as much as 7 meters. Since reference sources for these data include 0.6-meter September 2007 high-resolution, orthorectified aerial photography from the NAIP, October 2007 low-altitude color videos of the Mississippi barrier islands acquired from Great Divide pictures under contract to the NPS, and 1.0-meter June 2007 EAARL data collected by NASA and the USGS, shape boundary accuracy will be inconsistent. Most of the data are referenced to 0.6-meter resolution aerial photography from 2007 and 1.0-meter horizontal resolution EAARL surveys taken in 2007, geospatial analysis may have resulted in inaccuracies up to 5 meters. Process_Step: Process_Description: Previous processes resulted in well-defined geomorphic classifications. However, there were numerous 0.6- to 1.8-meter misclassified areas throughout the image. To correct these errors a clump and eliminate analysis was performed, followed by a neighborhood analysis. This process effectively removed all small misclassification errors. All three analyses were run using the default settings in ERDAS Imagine and the Neighborhood Definition was defined as a 3 pixel by 3 pixel area (10.9 square meters).
