Description:
Abstract:
These data were collected under a cooperative agreement with the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Coastal and Marine Geology Program, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC). Initiated in 2003, the primary objective of this program is to develop regional geologic framework information for the management of coastal and marine resources. Accurate data and maps of sea-floor geology are important first steps toward protecting fish habitat, delineating marine resources, and assessing environmental changes due to natural or human impacts. The project is focused on the inshore waters (5-30 m deep) of Massachusetts between the New Hampshire border and Cape Cod Bay. Data collected for the mapping cooperative have been released in a series of USGS Open-File Reports (<http://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/project-pages/coastal_mass/html/current_map.html>).
This is the spatial dataset for the Red Brook Harbor survey area within Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. These data are the results of a high-resolution geophysical (bathymetry, backscatter intensity, and seismic reflection) and ground validation (sediment samples and bottom photographs) survey, conducted in 2009.
In addition to inclusion within the USGS-CZM geologic mapping effort, these Red Brook Harbor data will be used to assess the shallow-water mapping capability of the geophysical systems deployed for this project, with an emphasis on identifying resolution benchmarks for the interferometric sonar system. (<http://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/operations/ia/public_ds_info.php?fa=2009-018-FA>)
Purpose:
Comma delimited text files contain the raw sound velocity profiles collected during USGS Cruise 09018 in Red Brook Harbor, Massachusetts, in 2009. These data are supplied to provide the raw profile data used to minimize refraction artifacts within the swath bathymetric data. JPEG images of each sound velocity profile (SVP) were generated in order to provide a graphical view of the speed of sound versus depth for each SVP collected. SVP casts were collected with an AML Oceanographic SV Plus V2 velocimeter (Applied Microsystems).

Source_Contribution:
Sound velocity profiles are acquired in order to measure the speed of sound in the water column during survey operations. For this project this information is used to correct any refraction artifacts that may be present within the swath bathymetric data due to unaccounted for changes in the speed of sound throughout the water column. SVP casts were collected by hand with an AML Oceanographic SV Plus V2 velocimeter. Each SVP point in the associated SVP location point shapefile (<https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2010/1091/html/appendix1.html>) is hotlinked to the corresponding JPEG image showing sound velocity plotted by depth.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The SV Plus v2 velocimeter was lowered by hand to the seafloor. Upon recovery, the SV Plus v2 was connected to an onboard computer via a serial port, and SV Plus v2 communication software, SmartTalk, was used to download and convert the raw SVP file to CSV format.

Process_Description:
Each CSV file was opened in Microsoft Excel (version 2007) and saved as an XLS file. Graphs of the sound velocity profile (depth vs. speed of sound) were created for each SVP in Excel and then saved to PDF format. The PDF files were then opened in Adobe Photoshop (version CS4) and exported as JPEG images.
