Series_Information: Series_Name: USGS Open File Report Issue_Identification: OF 2010-1123 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Denver, Colorado Publisher: US Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2010/1123/ Description: Abstract: The Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer is the principal water source for south-central Oklahoma and is designated a sole source aquifer by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The geology that confines the Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer crops out over an area of about 520 square miles (fig. 1). The subsurface geologic framework and ground-water reservoir capacity of this fractured and karstic carbonate aquifer are largely unknown. Previous geologic mapping was conducted primarily by academic institutions and the Oklahoma Geological Survey in the mid-twentieth century. During the last half of the twentieth century most petroleum wells drilled in the Arbuckle, Hunton, and Tishomingo anticlines (fig. 1) were found to be unproductive. As a result, only modest attention was given to the production and potential sustainability of the Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer. In the 1990’s, an interest to better understand the regional geology and continental tectonics of southern Oklahoma occurred. The complex geology of the Arbuckle, Hunton, and Tishimingo anticlines (fig. 1), is characterized by great thicknesses of mostly carbonate sequences that are locally folded and faulted. The faulted and fractured nature and variable pre-erosional thicknesses (2,000 to 9,000 feet) of the Arbuckle stratigraphic units increases the complexity for characterizing the subsurface geologic framework of the Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer. A three-dimensional (3-D) EarthVision™ (EV) geologic framework model, that characterizes the geometric relationships and subsurface architecture of the geology confining the Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer in the Hunton anticline, is summarized in this report. This 3D EV model contains four geologic layers and 54 major and minor faults. The construction of the model involved integrating studies that include outcrop geology, available geologic and geophysical data from existing maps, and data from 126 drill-holes. Purpose: This geologic framework model can be used as a tool to visually explore and study geologic structures and show the connectivity of geologic units of high and low permeability between and across faults. The software can be used to display other data and information, such as drill-hole data, on this geologic framework model in three-dimensional space.
