Description:
Abstract: This dataset consists of records for over 1,500 mineral facilities throughout the continent of Asia and the countries of the Pacific Ocean. The mineral facilities include mines, plants, smelters, or refineries of aluminum, cement, coal, copper, diamond, gold, iron and steel, nickel, platinum-group metals, salt, silver, and others. Records include attributes, such as commodity, country, location, company name, facility type and capacity (if applicable), and latitude and longitude geographical coordinates (in both degrees-minutes-seconds and decimal degrees). The data were compiled from multiple sources, including the 2008 U.S. Geological Survey Minerals Yearbook (Asia and the Pacific volume), minerals statistics and information from the U.S. Geological Survey minerals information Web site (), and data collected by U.S. Geological Survey minerals information country specialists. Data -- active, planned, suspended, but not closed, facilities -- reflect the most recently published information. Other sources include statistical publications of individual countries, annual reports and press releases of operating companies, and trade journals. Due to the sensitivity of some energy commodity data, the quality of these data should be evaluated on a country-by-country basis. Additional information and explanation are available from the country specialists.
Purpose: The purpose of this dataset is to present information about the mineral facilities of Asia and the Pacific, including their location, ownership or operating company, operating status, and capacity. This dataset reflects the mineral operations pertinent to commodities discussed in the International Minerals Yearbook chapters of the U.S. Geological Survey Minerals Yearbook, Volume III.
Supplemental Information: The production of these maps was performed jointly by on-site contractors from ETI Professionals and University of Puerto Rico--Mayagüez Campus--Youth Initiative Program students under supervision of U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center (NMIC) Global Minerals Analysis Section (GMA) country specialists. Editorial reviews were performed by staff at the U.S. Geological Survey Publishing Service Center in Reston, Virginia.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report: No guarantee is made as to the accuracy of the attributes. Attribute values represent best-available data from research of sources such as statistical publications of individual countries, annual reports and press releases of operating companies, and trade journals. Coordinates were added by researching the company name, facility name, and (or) general location as provided by country specialists; in some cases coordinates may be that of the nearest town or province centroid. Due to the sensitivity of some energy commodity data, the quality of these data should be evaluated on a country-by-country basis.
Logical_Consistency_Report: No one, single comprehensive test for logical consistency was performed on this dataset. It should be noted that values for the field describing facility capacities are in figures without units of measure; another field records the unit of measure.
Otherwise, consistency checks were performed on individual fields in the table to make sure that data conformed to a limited set of options (e.g. - Status, Type, Units); otherwise, data is unique to the facility, making such consistency checks impossible to perform across the entire field and table.
Completeness_Report: The data were gathered in support of the U.S. Geological Survey Minerals Yearbook (Volume III. -- Area Reports: International). An attempt was made to include operations that are either known to be or have been economically significant and therefore included in the Yearbook tables. If not directly mentioned in the Yearbook tables, then these additional operations were in some way included in the calculation of production numbers in the Yearbook tables.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The coordinates of the operations were obtained at a world scale. In many cases, the coordinates are those of nearby cities or province centroids, especially where the site name is that of a city or province. There is no uniform precision.

Process_Description: U.S. Geological Survey Global Minerals Analysis Section (National Minerals Information Center) Country Specialists provided the authors of U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2010-1254 with lists of facilities known to be active in the countries of Asia and the Pacific based on their research of statistical publications of individual countries, annual reports and press releases of operating companies, and trade journals. Plant capacities were also provided when possible.

Process_Step:
Process_Description: Open-File Report 2010-1254 was created, which is in the form of a map (ArcMap 9.3 map exported to PDF) and as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
Process_Date: 2010
Process_Step:
Process_Description: The Microsoft Excel spreadsheet was populated with data from the most recently published version of the table “Structure of the Mineral Facilities” of each country in the region. In collaboration with the country specialists, data gaps were identified and rectified, where possible. Data gaps included missing information, mining methods, facility names, capacity values, and appropriate units of measurement.
Process_Date: 2010
Process_Step:
Process_Description: The Microsoft Excel spreadsheet was saved as a dbaseIV file. This file was uploaded into ESRI ArcMap 9.3 / ArcGIS software and converted into data events. The data events were converted into an ESRI shapefile. The final map and table were reviewed by country specialists for accuracy and completeness.
