Data notes for "Geologic Map of the White Hall Quadrangle, Frederick County, Virginia, and Berkeley County, West Virginia", U.S. Geological Survey Open-file Report 2010-1265: All GIS data is projected to UTM Zone 17N, Datum NAD83; units are in meters. A browse graphic, suitable for printing (map ~46"x42" at 100%) of the full map layout with description of map units, discussion, etc. is entitled WhiteHall_Open-File_2010-1265. This file is in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format. The Adobe Acrobat Reader is available free, online at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html Three compressed file folders can be downloaded from the web page: WhiteHall_GIS.zip, Metadata.zip, and WHITE_HALL_MAP.kmz. The compressed .zip files can be extracted with any standard decompression software, such as WinZip for Windows PCs or Stuffit for Mac OS/X. The compressed .kmz file can be opened and viewed within the Google Earth application. The Google Earth application is available for free download at http://www.google.com/earth/index.html. Once extracted, the GIS data are contained in the WhiteHall_GIS_data\ directory. The GIS layers are in the form of an ESRI geodatabase named WhiteHallGeologicMap.mdb. Copies also provided as shapefiles in the WhiteHall_shapefiles\ subdirectory. The shapefile names are as they appear in the geodatabase. Also included is an ArcMap 9.3 project contained in the WhiteHallGeologicMap.mxd file. This file is a digital cartographic representation of the geodatabase. It displays the geologic data and basemap with appropriate symbology. It does not contain the description of map units, discussion, or ancillary graphics found in the full graphics layouts. ArcMap 9.3 or higher is required to view this file. Basemaps are provided in the WhiteHall_basemap\ subdirectory. These files are georegistered raster datasets. The WhiteHall_topobase base map is a georegistered digital raster graphic (DRG) of the U.S. Geological Survey White Hall 7.5 minute quadrangle topographic map. Two other raster datasets are included to supplement the base map: whitehall_dem is a 10m horizontal resolution digital elevation model (DEM) dataset, and whitehall_hsd is a shaded relief derivative of the DEM. Photos that accompany the map are in the WhiteHall_photos\ subdirectory. The photos are linked to the locality where they were taken within the geodatabase. To view a photo within the ArcMap project, use the Hyperlink tool (lightning bolt icon in ArcMap 9.3) and click on points within the PhotoPoints feature. Metadata files for all of the layers are in the Metadata_WhiteHall\ directory. This data set is available on the internet at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2010/1265/
