Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Bathymetry, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities off southern New England, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. During July-August 2008 NOAA completed hydrographic survey H11922 west of Gay Head, Massachusetts, in Rhode Island Sound and during July and September 2010 bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of ground-truth reconnaissance surveys of this area. Interpretations were derived from the multibeam echo-sounder data and the ground-truth data used to verify them. Why was the data set created?

The purpose of this dataset is to release the locations and identifiers of 93 bottom photographs collected at 25 stations on topographic and backscatter data of the sea floor off Gay Head, Massachusetts, in eastern Rhode Island Sound. The photos were collected with a modified Van Veen grab sampler modified to carry still and video camera systems ( SEABOSS) during USGS cruises 2010-033-FA and 2010-005-FA in geographic, WGS84.

    Date: 2010 (process 1 of 2)
    Navigation and time recorded from the DGPS and in cruise logs were correlated with times in the EXIF headers of the photographs. This information was input into an Excel 2003 (.xls) file and exported to create an ASCII file of this information. Shapefiles were created in ArcView 3.3 from the ASCII comma-delimited files.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

    All attributes were checked in a consistent manner

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

    Navigation was by differential GPS. Although GPS gave the ship's position rather than that of the SEABOSS, water depths were generally shallow and scope of the cable minimal. Therefore, SEABOSS offset from the antenna was less than 10 m.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

    Locations of all 93 acceptable still photographs of the sea floor collected within the study area during the R/V Rafael 2010-033-FA (88 photos at 21 stations) and RV Connecticut 2010-005-FA (5 photos at 4 stations) cruises are included in this data set. Unacceptable photographs included test shots on deck, water column pre-trips, and images where the bottom was totally obscured by turbidity. There is no station 922-5.

    No additional checks for topological consistency were performed on this data.
