The geospatial part of this data set was extracted from the 2000 Census Version TIGER/Line™ files (CD–ROM edition). The positional accuracy of the TIGER/Line coordinates varies with the source materials used but at best meets the established National Map Accuracy standards (+/- 167 feet approximately) where 1:100,000-scale maps from the USGS are the source. The Census Bureau cannot specify the accuracy of feature updates added by its field staff or of features derived from the GBF/DIME-Files or other map sources. Thus, the level of positional accuracy in the TIGER/Line files is not suitable for high-precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface.

The following steps were performed by ESRI for Data & Maps 2002: Extracted 2000 Census tract geography from GDT Dynamap/Census Boundaries v4.0, and then aggregated it into counties (the boundaries, therefore, are consistent with the boundaries of the Census tracts and have all of the detailed vertices necessary to maintain consistency with the tract level of detail). Added demographic attributes from Summary File 1 (SF1). Added farm attributes from 1997 Census of Agriculture. Added Pop2001 attribute from ESRI Business Information Solutions. Converted Hawaii to North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) by splitting it from the rest of the United States; converting it to NAD83; then merging them together. Recalculated any attributes based on area. Created ArcGIS™ layer file (.lyr) and ArcView legend file (.avl). Copied projection file (.prj), and created spatial indices.

Process_Description:
The following New York counties were selected in ArcMap 9.2: Suffolk, Queens, Kings, and Nassau. With these records selected, right mouse click on the data layer - data - export data. Exported the selected records to the shapefile longisland_counties.shp. Additionally, the XML was edited using NPS Metadata tools to remove the binary enclosure which shows the counties for the entire United States. Other than adding this process step and removing the binary enclosure, the metadata remains unchanged.
