Description:
Abstract:
One hundred forty-four sedimentary basins (or groups of basins) are identified, located, and briefly described in support of the Geologic Carbon Dioxide Sequestration National Assessment Project (Brennan and others, 2010). This catalog of basins is designed to provide a check list and basic geologic framework for compiling more detailed geologic and reservoir engineering data for this and other potential projects.
Purpose:
A map/data base of sedimentary basins of the United States is a promised early deliverable of the Carbon Dioxide Geologic Sequestration National Assessment Project.

Data_Quality_Information:
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data are variably reliable. Those basins defined using Cohee and others (1962) and Frezon and Finn (1988) are probably the most reliable. Those basins using other references are probably less reliable. Outlines of Cenozoic and Mesozoic basins are usually more reliable than outlines of Paleozoic and Neoproterozoic basins. Outlines of older basins which are overlain by younger basins are less reliable than basins which have never been overprinted by younger geologic activities. Problems remaining in the data set are associated with poorly defined basin outlines in the references used to create the basin outlines. Some basins may have been inadvertently omitted or merged with other basins and, therefore, appear to be left out of the catalog.
Completeness_Report:
Any gaps in the data would be most common in incomplete data sets for Paleozoic and Neoproterozoic basins. Additionally, the basin borders were selected by structural closure rather than stratigraphic thickness. Depending on the user's concept of basins and basin forming mechanisms, this may cause misunderstandings as to the extent of any of the basins.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The accuracy of the geographic locations of the basins is highly variable and a function of the source data. The most reliable locations are those defined by using Cohee and others (1962) and Frezon and Finn (1988). The majority of the data used in this compilation was taken from maps at scales of 1:2,500,000 and 1:5,000,000. Additional, supplemental data were taken from a variety of larger scale, smaller area, maps. The shapefile polygon data in this data base are reconnaissance in nature and best used at scales no larger than 1:1,000,000.

Publication of literature from which the data to create polygons of each sedimentary basin were taken
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: Source_Scl
Attribute_Definition:
Scale of map in publication from which basins were digitized. Users should be aware of scales when examining polygons in detail, as different source scales indicate how accurate basin boundaries are drawn. The polygons are meant to be used as reference or reconnaissance, and therefore it is recommended that they should not be used for large-scale, detailed anaylsis. The scale ratio which is smaller is used as the source scale for basins that have more than one source listed.

Enumerated_Domain_Value: Rift & Transtensional (incl. Intracratonic Aulocogens)
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Rift basins are those that form within continental masses as a result primarily of extensional forces, resulting in a fault bounded basin. Typically one of the basin-bounding faults has more offset than the other. Because pure orthogonal extension is relatively rare, most rift basins have some component of transcurrent or strike-slip faulting. Those basins with a substantial amount of strike-slip, but net extensional faulting are termed transtensional basins. If rifting progresses long enough, proto-oceanic basins may form. Aulocogens are those rift basins that form as the failed arm of a triple junction. As the oceanic rifting leaves the failed arm behind, its inherent structural weakness may permit renewed rifting throughout its history. All three of these basins are elongated and may have very thick sedimentary accumulations. Modern examples of intracratonic rift and transtensional basins are those that form along the East Africa and the Rio Grande Rifts. The Reelfoot Rift and Anadarko Basin are considered examples of aulocogen basins.

Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Sag
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Sag basins are those basins that form within continental masses, probably as result of asthenospheric downwelling. They are rarely fault-bounded, but may contain internal strike-slip faulting. Sag basins are commonly circular to oval in shape and may have multiple histories of basin subsidence. They may be large and thick or small and thin. They may form over older basins and inherit only some of the previously existing structural grain. Many intracratonic sag basins are Paleozoic in age.
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Coleman, J.L.
Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Passive Margin (incl. deltaic)
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Passive margin basins are those basins which form on the margins of continents that are not active tectonic or fault-bounded margins. In this study, they are restricted to those passive margin basins which form over continental and transitional oceanic crust. They are typically very large and may have substantial thickness of sedimentary rock. Because the basin typically opens into oceanic areas away from continental crust, the thickest passive margin basins are built over mobile substrates such as massive salt or shale intervals that deform plastically and permit sedimentary intervals to slight slowly towards the open ocean. Where continental drainage delivers siliclastic sediment to the shoreline, thick, deltaic accumulations can develop, further accentuating sediment loading and basin slippage oceanward.

Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Foreland & Thrust Belt
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Foreland basins are those basins which form adjacent to thrust belts and fault-bounded uplifts. Two types of foreland basins are included in this category: (1) foreland basins that form adjacent to decollement fault thrust and fold belts, and (2) foreland basins that form adjacent to germanotype anticlinal uplifts. Where sedimentary rocks are involved in the thrust faulting, they are included in the basin proper, as they are correlative to those undeformed rocks within the basin. Foreland basins adjacent to decollement thrust and fold belts are typically elongated and parallel to the structural grain of the orogenic belt. Foreland basins adjacent to germanotype anticlinal uplifts are typically elliptical. Both types may have very thick accumulations of sedimentary rocks.

Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Borderland
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Borderland basins are those basins which form along the margins of a continent as a result of transtensional and transpressional faulting associated with the oblique collision of tectonic plates. They form at major bends along the collisional boundary. The combination of basin forming (transtensional faulting) and mountain forming (transpressional faulting) produces relatively small basins and uplifts along the plate boundary.

Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Transtensional/Transpressional
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Transtensional/transpressional basins are those basins which form at the margins of continents, typically along plate tectonic boundaries. Basins form along releasing bends and may be completely surrounded by faults. Classic examples of this type of basin are the basins which formed along the Dead Sea Rift Zone.

Enumerated_Domain_Value: Accreted Back-arc
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Accreted back-arc basins are those basins which are hypothesized to form as a result of trench roll-back in that area landward of the volcanic chain on the other side from the subduction zone and then accreted onto the continental margin. These basins are typically very long and very narrow.
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Coleman, J.L.
Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Accreted Fore-arc
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Accreted fore-arc basins are those basins which form between the subduction zone and an associated volcanic arc, and then accreted onto the continental margin. They may be deformed by faulting associated with the subduction zone. These basins are typically very long and narrow. A classic example of this type of basin is the Great Valley of California.
