It was produced by importing 1:250,000 and 1:100,000 scale digital elevation models (DEM'S) into ARC and merging the lattices into one. In ARC/INFO GRID, the structure elevation grid (created in ARC from point and contour line data using TOPOGRID) was subtracted from the DEM, creating overburden thickness. [In areas of inadequate data control on the Upper Freeport coal bed, mapped elevations from other coal beds were projected to the stratigraphic level of the Upper Freeport in order to create the structure contour map subsequently used to calculate overburden. Thus in areas of sparse data or where the coal's elevation was projected the overburden thickness can be considered suspect.] The overburden grid was contoured into 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 foot isolines and is presented clipped to the areal extent of the Upper Freeport coal used in the USGS Appalachian coal assessment. In areas of steep relief (largely in parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia), a distance of 384 meters from the Upper Freeport crop boundary was used (based on 40 randomly sampled points that were arithmetically averaged) to estimate the the 200-foot isopleth, where computer-generated thickness inconsistencies occurred. Coverage is called c9011ob (011 being the numeric code assigned to the Upper Freeport coal bed). Polygon attributes include a code for the USGS overburden category (Wood and others (1983). Purpose: The purpose of Professional Paper 1625 is to release the interpretation of assessment and modeling data for the the top-producing coal beds in the northern and central Appalachian Basin coal regions. This dataset was used in the National Coal Resource Assessment Program to classify coal resources for the Upper Freeport coal bed in Region 9, the Appalachians. The dataset has been generalized and is useful in regional studies - not applicable to local scales. Existing point and map data for the Upper Freeport coal bed were used with the permission and through the cooperation of coal geologists (primary contacts listed) at the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey (Mitch Blake and Nick Fedorko), the Pennsylvania Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey (James R. Shaulis and Viktoras W. Skema), the Ohio Division of Geological Survey (Richard W. Carlton) and the Maryland Geological Survey (Dave Brezinski). [WVGES, PAGS, OHGS, and MDGS, respectively.] Structure contour maps for other coal beds from these sources were used of neccessity to create the structure contours for the Upper Freeport where data were scarce. It is recommended that new data be obtained from the State geological surveys that are the original sources of information used in this study. Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Deductive Estimate: Because many small-scale features were removed (individual hills and upper reaches of erosional features), local accuracy is estimated to be poor. In addition, the structure contour map of the coal bed used to create this coverage is known to be less reliable where data from other coal bed elevations were used. Logical_Consistency_Report: Topologically clean Completeness_Report: The polygons in this coverage are a generalized representation of overburden thickness based on categories prescribed by USGS Circular 891 adn clipped to the areas of resource assessment for the Upper Freeport coal bed. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The grid cell sizes used to create this file were 200 meter square. The contouring routine may go to either side of a cell, therfore horizontal accuracy is estimated to minimally be 100 meters. Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The data values from which polygons were derived represent the subtraction of the top of the Upper Freeport Coal from a DEM lattice. The original measurement errors associated with the DEM vary with scale; errors associated with the structure contour map are likely to be on the order of 50 feet. These errors are likely to be cumulative. The grid which produced the contours for this coverage's polygons had a maximum value for overburden thickness of slightly more than 2000 feet within the resource areas shown on this coverage. Process_Date: 1999 Process_Step: Process_Description: The Upper Freeport crop coverage was used to CLIP the overburden coverage to limit its extent to the crop. Process_Date: 1999 Process_Step: Process_Description: Some errors were noted where the 200-foot isolines intersected the crop boundary. Forty points were randomly selected along the 200- foot isopleths and the distance measured perpendicular to the crop. These distances were averaged (non-geometric) and the resulting distance (384 meters) used to BUFFER inside the outcrop line to interpolate a 200-foot isoline. Old 200-500 foot polygons that intersected the buffered polygon were changed to the 0-200 foot category; areas that did not intersect kept their original category value. Process_Date: 1999 Process_Step: Process_Description: Due to the large cell sizes used in the grid subtraction and errors in source UF-1 (especially where other beds were interpolated to the Upper Freeport stratigraphic level), some overburden polygons of intermediate thicknesses were missing (i.e. 500-1000 ft polygons were adjacent to 0-200 polygons, missing the 200-500). These polygons were manually relabeled to the lower appropriate category (in this example, 200-500). Values were gridded in EarthVision and the grid imported to ARC/INFO in ASCII format. Subtraction of this surface from a 200m cell topographic grid was then contoured into varying intervals, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000. Because of the generalization of this coverage, 100 feet would be the likely accuracy. Distribution_Information: Distributor: Contact_Information: Contact_Person_Primary: Contact_Person: Susan J.
