Publication_Date: 2000 Title: Geologic Assessment of Coal in the Colorado Plateau Series_Information: Series_Name: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper Issue_Identification: 1625-B Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Denver, CO Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Description: Abstract: Final unioned polygon coverages and shapefiles used to calculate coal resources of the A through G coal zones, Danforth Hills coal field, northwestern Colorado. Dana_fin was used for the A coal zone; Danb_fin was used for the B coal zone; etc. Polygons that make up the final unioned polygons include counties, 7.5' quadrangles, townships, surface and coal ownership, lease boundaries, overburden, and coal thickness categories. The final coverages were clipped to the resource areas for each coal zone, which are described in the metadata files for the *_bnd coverages. Purpose: The Nation's coal resources are being assessed by the USGS. This assessment identifies and characterizes the coal beds and coal zones that will provide the bulk of the nation's coal-derived energy during the next century. This assessment is different from previous large-scale USGS assessments because files and databases are being stored in a digital format and are being analyzed using a Geographic Information System (GIS). County data used in unioned polygons are described in metadata file dan_cnty.met. 7.5 minute quadrangle data are described in dan24qd.met and was unioned with county coverage. Township and range data are described in dan_tr.met and was unioned with the previously unioned coverage. Process_Date: 19990208 Process_Step: Process_Description: A coverage was generated from digital data on the surface ownership and energy minerals owned by the Federal government in the BLM Little Snake River and White River Field Office areas. The original source of the data was from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, captured at a scale of 24,000. The original data came from BLM in two coverages, one for surface ownership and one for mineral ownership. The USGS Energy Team unioned the two coverages into one. Slivers that resulted from inexact overlay were eliminated. This new coverage for ownership was snapped to the township and range coverage because the ownership polygons are very often coincident with township and range polygons, This process was an effort to eliminate slivers along township lines. The resultant coverage was unioned with the coverage containing county, 7.5' quadrangle, and township data. These data layers are described in dan_cnty.met, dan_24k.met, and dan_tr.met. Process_Date: 19990209 Process_Step: Process_Description: A coverage was then unioned to the previously unioned coverage that is polygons of the state and federal coal leases in the Danforth Hills coal field. This coverage is described in dan_leas.met. Coal resources were not calculated within the boundaries of the lease areas. Process_Date: 19990209 Process_Step: Process_Description: A coverage was generated from a gridded file of data representing the overburden thickness to the base of each of the coal zones. The overburden grid is a result of subtracting the grid for the top of the Trout Creek Sandstone Mbr. from the grid of the earth's surface in EarthVision. The surface grid is a Digital Elevation Model of the Danforth Hills study area imported through EarthVision. In ARC/INFO, the overburden coverage was unioned with the unioned overage created in process step 3. Process_Date: 19990209 Process_Step: Process_Description: A coverage was generated from a gridded file of data from drill holes and measured sections that contain x, y, data for location and values for the net coal thickness for each of the coal zones. Details about how this data file was generated from the Stratifact data base are described in the metadata file dan_thk.met EarthVision was used to do the gridding. The net coal thickness does not include coal beds that are less than resource thickness, which for bituminous coal is 1.2 ft. Contours defining the coal thickness categories for bituminous coal from USGS Circular 891, were generated from the grid. The lines were then converted to ARC/INFO polygon coverage using an Arc Macro Language program provided by Illinois State Geological Survey. This polygon coverage was unioned with the unioned coverage created in process step 4. Process_Date: 19990212 Process_Step: Process_Description: The ARC/INFO polygon coverages generated in process step 5 were then clipped using the Arc 'identity' command. The input coverages are described in metadata files dan*_bnd.met. The identity coverages are the polygons generated from process step 5 and the output coverages are these dan*_fin polygon coverages. These coverages were converted to shapefiles in ArcView. A detailed description of the methodology for calculating coal resources for the Colorado Plateau is contained in Roberts and other, chap. C.
