Desb_fin was used for the B coal zone; Desd_fin was used for the D coal zone. Polygons that make up the final unioned polygons include counties, 7.5' quadrangles, townships, surface and coal ownership, lease area, overburden, and coal thickness categories. The final coverages were clipped to the resource areas for each coal zone, which are described in the metadata files for the des_bnd coverages. Purpose: The Nation's coal resources are being reassessed by the USGS. This assessment identifies and characterizes the coal beds and coal zones that will provide the bulk of the nation's coal-derived energy during the next century. This assessment is different from previous large-scale USGS assessments because files and databases are being stored in a digital format and are being analyzed using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Completeness_Report: none Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: An x, y extent greater than the resource area was used to begin the unioning process and was clipped, as a last step, by the polygon that limits the resource area. County data used in unioned polygons are described in metadata file lwr_cnty.met. Township and range data are described in des_tr.met and was unioned with the County coverage. 7.5 minute quadrangle data are described in des24qd.met and was unioned with the previously unioned coverage. A coverage was provided to the USGS from the Bureau of Land Management that contains data on the surface ownership and energy minerals owned by the Federal government in the White River Resource area. The original source of the data was captured at a 24,000. The USGS used information in the item called DATA in the original file to populate USGS standardized items SURF (8 8 c) and FEDMINS (8 8 c). This coverage for ownership was snapped to the township and range coverage because the ownership polygons are very often coincident with township and range polygons. This process was an effort to eliminate slivers along township lines. The resultant coverage was unioned with the coverage containing county, 7.5' quadrangle, and township data. A coverage was then unioned to the previously unioned coverage that is polygons of the state and federal coal leases in the Deserado area. This coverage is described in des_lmu.met. Coal resources were not calculated within the boundaries of the lease areas. A coverage was generated from a gridded file of data representing the overburden thickness to the base of each of the 2 coal zones. The overburden grid for the base of the B coal zone is a result of subtracting the grid for the top of the Coal marker sands (base of the B coal zone) from the grid of the earth's surface in EarthVision (EV). The surface grid is a 7.5'-scale Digital Elevation Model of the Deserado study area imported through EV. The map of the overburden was plotted in EV with a contour interval of 500 ft. The contour lines were saved in a contour output file. The contour output file was converted to a file in 'arc generate' format using ISMARC and then converted to an ARC/INFO polygon coverage using an Arc Macro Language program from the Illinois State Geological Survey. The base of the D coal zone is, on the average, 55 ft above the top of the Coal marker sands. A overburden contour map was plotted using the same grid that was used to generate the overburden polygons for the B coal zone, but we plotted the 555-ft and 1055-ft contours. In ARC/INFO, the overburden coverage was unioned with the previously unioned coverage. A coverage was generated from a gridded file of data from drill holes and measured sections that contain x, y, data for location and values for the net coal thickness for each of the coal zones. Details about how this data file was generated from the Stratifact data base are described in the metadata file des*_thk.met EarthVision was used to do the gridding. The net coal thickness does not include coal beds that are less than resource thickness, which for bituminous coal is 1.2 ft. Contours defining the coal thickness categories for bituminous coal from USGS circular 891, were generated from the grid. The lines were then converted to ARC/INFO polygon coverage using an Arc Macro Language program provided by Illinois State Geological Survey. This polygon coverage was unioned with the coverage created from the previous union. The ARC/INFO polygon coverages generated from all these unions were then clipped using the Arc 'identity' command. The 'input' coverage is described in a metadata file called des_bnd.met. The 'identity' coverages are the final unioned polygons. The 'output' coverages are these desb_fin and desd_fin polygon coverages. These coverages were converted to shapefiles in ArcView where they were processed.
