The outside polygon defines the base of the John Henry Member of the Straight Cliffs Formation east of 112 degrees of longitude. The polygon includes areas where the Calico and A-sequences have been partially eroded. The northern boundary is delineated by the Paunsaugunt fault and volcanic rocks of Tertiary age. Purpose: The Nation's coal resources are being assessed by the USGS. A fundamental component of this assessment work is to compile digital geologic and geographic data into a Geographic Information System (GIS). Use of this GIS allowed for the spatial integration of data layers. This resulted in the ability to display, analyze, and query data to answer complex geo-spatial questions concerning coal resource occurrence. This data set is intended as a basemap layer for GIS applications at a scale of 1:125,000 or less. The lines were converted from table coordinates to Lambert with the following parameters: Units METERS Spheroid CLARKE1866 Parameters: 1st standard parallel 33 0 0.000 2nd standard parallel 45 0 0.000 central meridian -111 30 0.00 latitude of projection's origin 0 0 0.000 false easting (meters) 0.00000 false northing (meters) 0.00000 The data were later projected to UTM 12 for the coal resource calculations, and then projected to geographic decimal degrees. This file is the result of creating a contour output file in the plot routine in Earth Vision. The contour output file was then run through the ISMARC program that converted the contour output file into an Arc/Info GENERATE file. The Arc/Info GENERATE file is then converted to a polygon coverage in Arc/info by using Colin Treworgy's Arc Macro Language (AML) program "convert-ism". The coverage used to clip the contours in every case was the coverage that represents Calico sequence boundary. Following is a description of the parameters used in gridding the scattered data files to generate the grids in ISM: Coordinate system: Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Units: Meters UTM zone: 12 Ellipsoid: Clarke 1866 Semi-major axis in meters: 6378206.4 Semi-minor axis in meters: 6356583.8 Grid size: 276 by 312 Grid range: 407508,503665 4098129,4203271 Treworgy's aml "convert-ism" assigns a value to the item DEPTH, which we changed to THICK, by taking one-half the contour interval and adding it to the minimum contour that defines a polygon. For example, if the contour interval is 10, and a polygon is bounded by the 10 and 20 contour lines, then the THICK value assigned to that polygon is 15. Revisions: Projected to UTM 12 and then to geographic decimal degrees.
