Fraticelli, J.P. Albers, W.P. Irwin, and M.C. Blake, Jr., with various improvements and additions. It was compiled by Irwin and C.M. Wentworth from a digital scan of the original Open-File map. The map shows the general distribution of bedrock and surficial deposits of the Redding 1x2-degree quadrangle, as portrayed in the original map. Geologic map units are identified by general age and lithology, largely following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey (the sources of some names used by Fraticelli and others remain unclear). Many uncertainties about lines and labels in the original map have been resolved for this version, but many remain. Purpose: The digital database provides the geologic map in digital form, permitting graphic presentation in color on a colored topographic base. The original OFR publication is black and white, including the base, and is extremely difficult to read. It should be noted that cultural information in the base is current as of 1976 (date of the base map). The base used is a raster scan of the original edition sheet. This database and accompanying graphic map image depict the distribution of geologic materials at a regional (1:250,000) scale. The report is intended to show the geologic framework and geologic history of the region. Supplemental_Information: Procedures_Used: The GIS process involved scanning a paper copy of the original map, vectorizing the linework in ArcGIS, and then editing that linework in workstation ArcInfo (v. 8.1) under the control of the menu interface ALACARTE (Fitzgibbon and Wentworth, 1991; Wentworth and Fitzgibbon, 1991). Label points were then added to identify the geologic units. The original map compiled by Fraticelli and others (1987; Open-File Report 87-257) was prepared with ink on mylar and released as a black-line map on a screened base. Here, we (Porter Irwin and Carl Wentworth) have converted that original map into a colored digital map supported by GIS files. The original map contained many unlabelled polygons and various polygons containing conflicting labels, incomplete unit boundaries (hanging lines), and mislabeled areas. We resolved many of these problems, in part by consulting more detailed maps of the area. The 543 remaining unlabelled polygons (uncolored on the map) are mostly small and probably mostly surficial deposits, but some larger unlabelled areas remain, particularly in the southeastern part of the map. Dashed contacts and faults in the original are not distinguished from solid lines in the database or the map graphic. The numerous bedrock contacts separating the same map units are present in the original map and are not GIS errors. The GIS files in this report are in either GRID (Arc-Info raster data) or COVERAGE (Arc-Info vector data) format. Coverages are stored in uncompressed ARC export format. Arc-Info export files (files with an .e00 extension) can be converted into Arc-Info coverages in Arc-Info (see below) and can be read by some other Geographic Information Systems, such as MapInfo via ArcLink and ESRI's ArcMap and ArcView. The GIS data model is that of ALACARTE, which is similar to the single geologic map model of Gautier (1999). Geographic registration of the source map and base was accomplished by defining locations of the quadrangle corners in the scanned images relative to locations calculated in Arc-Info and then warping the images to those constraints. The location of lines in this database may have considerable uncertainty, based on differences as large as 500 m or more between equivalent lines in this database and that of the larger scale maps (1:100,000) of McLaughlin and others (2000). These could result from distortions in the 1:250,000-scale base map on which the geology was originally compiled and in the scan of the paper original used in preparing this report or possibly from their digital processing, but could also have been introduced during compilation of the original geologic map. The southern half of the map area is covered by two geologic maps at 1:100,000: McLaughlin and others (2000) and Blake and others (1999). These, together with five 15-minute quadrangles by Irwin (2009, 2010a,b), Irwin and others (2011), and Albers and others (1964), were consulted to help identify unlabelled polygons and resolve apparent geologic conflicts. Units Qbt (Basalt near Tuscan Buttes, Holocene and (or) Pleistocene), Qeb (Olivine basalt of Eagle Canyon, Pleistocene), and Qra (Rockland Ash, Pleistocene), unlabelled on the original map, have been identified from Blake and others (1999). The identity and age of the units labeled Ttm and rcsv remain unknown. Revisions: Please see the ASCII text file OFR12-1228-version.txt for information about any revisions to this report. Reviews_Applied_to_Data: The 1987 OFR version of this report was scientifically reviewed at that time. The present report has also undergone two scientific peer reviews, a digital database review, a review for conformity with geologic names policy, and editorial review of the text and map graphic for clarity and conformity with USGS standards. Related_Spatial_and_Tabular_Data_Sets: This report consists of a set of geologic map database files (Arc-Info coverages), equivalent Arc shape files derived from those coverages, and a graphic file of the assembled geologic map (pdf format). The base map layer used in the preparation of the geologic map plot files was prepared by scanning a colored topographic map (paper) at a scale of 1:250,000, converting that to Arc-Info grid, and applying a set of processing steps to isolate the culture, contours, and drainage. The very dense contours of the original base have not been plotted in the map graphic in order to enhance legibility of the map. The image of the source geologic map (Fraticelli and others, 1987) was similarly prepared by scanning a paper original, clipping that image to just the geologic map itself, and then registering the image to the calculated corners of the quadrangle. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:250,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:250,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. The original map was compiled from a variety of more detailed sources. Note that any geologic mapping can be refined by more detailed field work and/or examination of artificial excavations. Points in the database are generally considered to be similarly well located. The position of each data item is located relative to the USGS topographic base map, and any locational inaccuracies in the base map are therefore inherent in the geologic locations as well. Note that considerable differences were found between locations of lines in the original map (as digitized) and equivalent lines in the more detailed geologic maps used for comparison (see Procedures_Used). In some cases these differences amounted to more than 500 m. Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: No vertical positional data is recorded. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Wentworth and Irwin Overview_Description: Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: The database in this report was compiled in workstation ArcInfo, a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California). Most of the attributes in the various attribute tables of the coverage included in the report are set or calculated by ArcInfo. The exceptions are OFR12-1228-GEOL-ID, LTYPE, and PTYPE. OFR12-1228-GEOL-ID is required by USGS policy to be sequential. This ensures the highest compatibility of our databases with other GISs. Therefore OFR12-1228-GEOL-ID is calculated to be equal to OFR12-1228-GEOL#, which is a unique, sequential integer assigned by ArcInfo to each data record. LTYPE and PTYPE are author added items to the coverage AAT or PAT that are used to describe the type of line (LTYPE) or area (PTYPE) being recorded. Each has WIDTH 35, OUTPUT 35, TYPE C.
