Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: Thomas W. Sisson Originator: James G. Moore Publication_Date: 2013 Title: Geologic map of southwestern Sequoia National Park, Tulare County, California Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Series_Information: Series_Name: Open-File Report Issue_Identification: 2013-1096 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Reston, VA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2013/1096/ Description: Abstract: This map encompasses 675 square kilometers (260 square miles) on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada, California, mainly in Sequoia National Park and Sequoia National Forest. The area includes the Mineral King 15-minute topographic quadrangle (sheet 1), all in Tulare County. Mapping was performed mainly on the 1:24,000 scale Mineral King, Silver City, Quinn Peak, Moses Mountain, Case Mountain, and Dennison Peak topographic bases. The map was produced by the U.S. Geological Survey at the request of the National Park Service to complete the geologic map coverage of Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. Rocks within this study area are chiefly Cretaceous granites and granodiorites of the Sierra Nevada batholith that intruded coherent masses of Mesozoic metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. Quaternary glacial till and talus are the principal surficial deposits, with the exception of a large bouldery debris-flow apron in the southwest corner of the map. The study area includes the headwaters of the Kaweah River's East and South Forks, the Tule River's North Fork and North Fork of the Middle Fork, and the Little Kern River. Relief is considerable, with elevations spanning from 1,500 feet along the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River to 12,432 feet at the summit of Florence Peak along the crest of the Great Western Divide. Purpose: The map was produced by the U.S. Geological Survey at the request of the National Park Service to complete the geologic map coverage of Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. Supplemental_Information: This database contains feature classes describing the geologic lines and polygons, structural lines and points, topographic quadrangle boundaries, and a grid of the topographic base. This metadata file contains an overview for the entire data release. For more detailed metadata, please see the metadata file provided with each individual feature class. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The data was edited at a scale of 1:24,000 and higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Acknowledgment of the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Well located data items are intended to have a horizontal positional accuracy better than 0.5 mm at 1:24,000 scale, or within 12 meters on the ground. The general positional accuracy of each line in the database is indicated qualitatively within the GeologicLineType field in the Geology_lines feature class. Points in the database are generally well located. The position of each data item is derived from a combination of USGS 1:24,000 topographic base maps and hand-held GPS, and therefore additional inaccuracies may also be encountered that are within National Map Accuracy Standards. Overview_Description: Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: This metadata file was written to provide an overview for the database. For more informative descriptions of the attributes, please see the metadata files associated with each feature class. There are two line feature classes, Geology_lines, and Structure_lines. The Geology_lines feature class contains geologic contacts, faults, dikes, moraine crests, thin marble layers, lake boundaries, and the limit of mapping. The GeologicLineType field contains each type of geologic lines and its locational certainty, for example, contact, certain. The Structure_lines feature class delineates the axis of anticline and syncline folds. The attributes are stored in the LineType field, along with its locational certainty, for example, syncline, certain. There are two polygon feature classes, Geology_polys and QuadBoundaries_polys. The Geology_polys feature class contains the boundaries of each geologic unit. Polygon attributes contained are GeologicUnitSymbol, IdentityConfidence, and Label. The GeologicUnitSymbol field contains the geologic unit symbols for each polygon and is the foreign key to the Colors and DescriptionOfMapUnits tables. The IdentityConfidence field describes how confident the author is on the polygon attribution. The Label field contains the formal label for each polygon. Two Relationship classes connect the Geology_polys feature class to the Colors and DescriptionOfMapUnits tables. QuadBoundaries_polys delineate each 7.5' quadrangle and field describe each quadrangle, including each quadrangle name. There is one point feature classes, Structure_points. This feature class contains the point location of structural measure in the area. Each point records the type of measurement (foliation, dip of contact, igneous layer, etc.), and the strike and dip. There is also one Annotaion feature class, Geology_Annotation. This feature class contains cartographic annotations of the geologic labels, dip numbers, and several geographic place names. The release also contains three tables. The Colors table contains color numbers that refer to CMYK values in the MineralKing.style files. A Map Join connects the Geology_polys feature class to the Colors table for color attribution. The DataSources table contains the references cited for this publication The DescriptionOfMapUnits table contains the complete geologic unit names and geologic unit descriptions for each of the geologic unit symbols on the map.
