These lines replicate concealed contacts shown in: Wells, Ray E., 1981, Geologic Map of the Eastern Willapa Hills - Cowlitz, Lewis, and Wahkiakum Counties, Washington, U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-674. Digital lines in this dataset were created by heads-up digitization in reference to a georeferenced digital image of the original stable base (mylar) map from which print copies of Open File Report 81-674 originally were produced. Locations of concealed contacts as mapped are approximate and were determined taking into account structural relationships such as the attitude of strata or faults as determined from nearby exposures and, in some instances, streamcut exposures of bedrock too small to map separately at the original scale of mapping. Such streamcut exposures are indicated in the map by the location of bedding attitudes (on bedrock units) within areas mapped as Alluvial deposits (Qa). For instance, several attitudes located within alluvium along the South Fork of the Chehalis River near the town of Wildwood (approx. coords. 123.09°N, 46.46°N) constrain the location of concealed contacts beneath alluvium. In creating this dataset, concealed contact lines were located by heads-up digitization in reference to a georeferenced digital image of the 1981 analog map on stable-base media (mylar). Concealed contacts were not involved in contacts topology defining the boundaries of polygons. Along the shoreline of the Columbia River and nearby tributaries, contact locations were modified slightly to account for minor differences in the shoreline locations between those shown on the USGS 7.5-minute series and 15-minute series topographic maps. Concealed contacts are characterized by a single user-defined field, Ltype. Values for Ltype include two comma-delimited parts: (1) type of contact; and, (2) certainty characterization. the type of contact is one of two values: "contact" for all non-fault contacts, "fault" for all fault contacts. The suffix for all records is "concealed". For example, the Ltype value for a concealed fault contact is "fault, concealed". Purpose: Defines the locations of concealed depositional, intrusive and fault contacts between geologic units in the Geologic Map of the Eastern Willapa Hills - Cowlitz, Lewis, and Wahkiakum Counties, Washington, by Ray E. Wells, 1981, USGS Open File Report 81-674. Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.
