The original 1981 map was compiled and published at a scale of 1:62,500. The term "unconcealed geologic contacts" refers to contacts not covered by Quaternary map units as mapped in this study. This digital database was compiled at a scale of 1:50,000 in reference to a topographic base map composed of USGS 7.5-minute series topographic quadrangles (1:24,000-scale). Geospatial linework was created by heads-up digitization in reference to a georeferenced digital copy of the original base-stable (mylar) map from which print copies of the 1981 USGS Open File Report 81-674 were created. This digital dataset of unconcealed geologic contacts replicates locations of contacts determined to be not concealed by Quaternary deposits based on field mapping as shown on the 1981 analog compilation map. Digital locations of contacts were reproduced within the width of lines shown on a georeferenced digital copy of the map. In the original analog map published in 1981, the width of non-fault contact lines in the georeferenced image of the analog map is approximately 16m; the width of fault contact lines is approximately 36m. Shorelines of USGS 7.5-minute series topographic maps (as DRGs) were adopted for this dataset. In the vicinity of the Columbia River, shorelines were created by heads-up digitization of shorelines shown on the DRGs and are included in polygon topology as in the 1981 analog compilation of the geology. In parts of the map, contact locations were modified slightly to account for minor differences in the location of water body boundaries between the USGS 1:24,000 scale (7.5-minute series) topographic maps adopted for this digital compilation and those shown on the USGS 1:62,500 scale (15-minute series) topographic maps used for the 1981 analog map. For areas north of the Columbia River, a dataset of 1:24,000-scale water boundaries was downloaded from the Bureau of Land Management OR/WA Data Library, and modified as necessary to match water boundaries shown on USGS 7.5-minute series topographic maps as DRGs. In the 1981 analog map, water bodies north of the Columbia River were not incorporated into topology given that these water bodies (mainly rivers) were shown as lines not having areal extent. This digital compilation replicates the 1981 compilation in this respect. Water body boundaries for areas north of the Columbia River are included in a separate feature class within the geodatabase and displayed in the map layout, but do not participate in topology. This dataset has one user-defined attribute, Ltype, a text field that identifies the type of contact and degree of certainty in its location. Ltype values for geologic contacts consist of two comma-delimited parts: (1) a prefix identifying the type of contact; and (2) a suffix characterizing the degree of certainty in the location and(or) existence of such contact. For example, an inferred non-fault contact has an Ltype of "contact, inferred". The type of contact and certainty characterization were determined from the symbolization of contacts as shown on the 1981 analog map. Contacts are identified as one of the following five types: fault (all faults other than those specifically identified as thrust faults), thrust fault, contact (all non-fault geologic contacts), water boundary, and map boundary. One of three levels of certainty characterization is applied to each geologic contacts: approx. located, inferred, and inferred from SLRI. No certainty characterization is assigned to water boundaries or the map boundary. The map boundary in this dataset was created from a point table of lat-long coordinates at regular intervals of 0.0025 degrees except at the ends of the eastern and western map boundaries where the interval is less. The East and West boundaries are along lines of constant longitude, the North and South boundaries are along lines of constant longitude. As such, the North and South map boundary locations differ slightly from the boundaries drawn with a straight edge in delineating the map boundary shown on the 1981 analog map. Purpose: Defines the locations of stratigraphic, intrusive and fault contacts between geologic units in the Geologic Map of the Eastern Willapa Hills - Cowlitz, Lewis, and Wahkiakum Counties, Washington, by Ray E. Wells, 1981, originally published as USGS OF81-674. Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.
