These point data reproduce fault attitudes shown in analog form in: Wells, Ray E., 1981, Geologic Map of the Eastern Willapa Hills, Cowlitz, Lewis, and Wahkiakum Counties, Washington, U.S. Geological Survey Open File Report 81-674. All records derive from fault attitudes measured by the author during field work completed 1978-1980. Additional records of fault attitudes are in the feature class EWH_fault_slickensides. Records of slickenside lineations measured on vertical fault surfaces in the dataset EWH_fault_slickensides provide fault attitudes in addition to those in this dataset (EWH_fault_attitudes). At locations where inclined slickenside lineations were measured on inclined fault surfaces, the point locations of fault orientations in this dataset coincide with locations of slickenside lineations, except in the one instance where slickenside lineations plunge down-dip. In this special case, the slickenside lineation identifies the fault orientation and, to avoid redundancy in symbolization and labeling, the fault orientation was not recorded in this Fault_attitudes dataset. Point locations of faults attitudes were digitized 'heads-up' from a georeferenced image of the 1981 map compiled on mylar. Locations correspond to the intersection of the line symbolizing fault dip direction and the fault trace line. All locations of fault orientations coincide with a vertex of a (digital) fault line. Fault orientations are described by three user-defined attributes: Ptype, Strike and Dip. The field Ptype includes text values defining two classes of fault orientations, inclined and vertical. These text values include the prefix "fault" followed by text characterizing orientation as inclined or vertical (e.g. "fault, inclined"). The field Strike contains values for strike azimuth, defined to be the direction 90 degrees counterclockwise from dip direction. Strike values are positive integers, in units of degrees. Allowable values are 0 to 359, inclusive. For this map, strike azimuths were estimated iteratively until the symbolized dip lie perpendicular to the fault trace. Precision in replicating the strike (and dip) direction as shown on the original map is estimated at 1 degree. The field Dip contains fault dip angles as integers, in units of degrees. Dip values were transcribed from dip numbers hand-written on the 1981 mylar compilation map. Dip values may range from 1 to 90; values in this dataset range from 40 to 90. Taking into account variations in the orientation of a fault at the scale of the outcrop, most dip entries recorded in the field were rounded to the nearest 5 degrees. Purpose: The point features in this dataset define the orientation (strike and dip) of bedding in sedimentary and volcanic rocks in the Geologic Map of the Eastern Willapa Hills, first published in analog form (paper) as: Wells, Ray E., 1981, Geologic Map of the Eastern Willapa Hills - Cowlitz, Lewis, and Wahkiakum Counties, Washington, U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-674. Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.
