This feature class is part of the EWH_Geology feature dataset within the geologic map geodatabase, Eastern_Willapa Hills_GeoDatabase. Locations of points in this dataset were defined by heads-up digitization of a georeferenced digital copy of the original base-stable (mylar) compilation map from which print copies of Open File Report 81-674 were created. Locations of symbols indicating relative lateral and vertical displacement across mapped faults replicate those shown in OF-81-674. In the 1981 analog compilation, locations of relative displacement symbols in this dataset were placed where relative displacement of geologic units was observed or inferred, where geomorphic evidence suggested relative displacement, and from measured slip indicators. Along faults identified from interpretation of SLRI (Side-Looking Radar Imagery), relative displacement indicators are based solely on landform interpretation. Although these are point symbols, the indicated sense of displacement applies to the general vicinity of the point along a fault. In addition, the these relative motion symbols do not imply pure vertical or lateral displacement along a fault, only that a component of such motion is inferred. Some faults are identified as having both vertical and lateral displacement. In this digital compilation, the point locations of these relative displacement indicators share a vertex along a fault. With two exceptions, each record is symbolized with a paired symbol according to Ptype (opposing half-arrows for lateral displacement, paired letters U and D for vertical displacement) to either side of the fault at the point location. A special case is where single arrows are shown on either side of two closely spaced faults have slightly different trends. User-defined fields of this dataset are Ptype and Strike. Ptype: The field Ptype comprises text values composed of three parts. The first part of all records is "fault", the second part identifies displacement as lateral or vertical ("rel. lateral motion" or "rel. vertical motion"), and the third part comprises text identifying the sense of displacement. Lateral fault displacements are coded as either "RL" (right-lateral) or "LL" (left-lateral). Vertical displacements are coded according to the position of the downdropped side as located on either the East or West side of the fault as "down to E" or "down to W". The 3 parts of Ptype entries are comma-delineated. In addition, in two instances an additional suffix is appended to accommodate a special instance for lateral displacement whereby only single arrows are displayed rather than paired arrows. In these instances, the Ptype field is appended with the text "single arrow". Strike: The field Strike refers to fault azimuth within 90 deg of North (270 to 90 deg.). This range is chosen to orient vertical displacement text symbols ("U" - Up, "D" - Down; with letters aligned parallel to a fault) in a generally upright position, rotated not more than 90 deg. from North. Values for strike were determined by iteratively estimating strike of faults at the position where a fault relative displacement symbol is shown on the 1981 mylar compilation until the text lie parallel to the line representing the fault. The strike field is used to rotate symbols assigned by Ptype text values. Note that these strike azimuths are not locations where fault orientation was measured on the ground. Recorded field observations of fault attitudes are in the feature class EWH_fault_attitudes within the EWH_Geology dataset of the geodatabase. Purpose: This dataset defines the sense of relative vertical and lateral displacement across faults. Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.
