This digital dataset was compiled in reference to a topographic base map composed of USGS 7.5-minute series topographic quadrangles. The original 1981 map was compiled at a scale of 1:62,500 on USGS 15-minutes series topographic maps. Fold lines were created by heads-up digitization of a georeferenced digital copy of the original stable-base (mylar) map from which print copies of USGS Open File Report 81-674 were created. This dataset is part of the EWH_Geology feature dataset within the geologic map geodatabase, Eastern_Willapa Hills_GeoDatabase. Fold lines are not incorporated into the topology of contact lines used to generate polygons of geologic units (i.e fold lines do not form boundaries of geologic unit polygons). Fold lines are differentiated as concealed where located within polygons of surficial deposits and water bodies. Along water bodies in the vicinity of the Columbia River, fold locations were adjusted (shortened or lengthened) to account for minor differences between locations of shorelines between the USGS 1:24,000-scale (7.5-minute series) topographic maps used as a base for digital compilation and the USGS 1:62,500-scale (15-minute series) topographic maps used as a base for the 1981 compilation. Shorelines of USGS 7.5-minute series topographic maps were adopted for this dataset. In the vicinity of the Columbia River, shorelines were created by heads-up digitization of shorelines shown on the DRGs and are included in polygon topology as was done in the 1981 compilation. For areas north of the Columbia River, a dataset of 1:24,000-scale water boundaries was downloaded from the Bureau of Land Management OR/WA Data Library, and modified as necessary to match water boundaries shown on USGS 7.5-minute series topographic maps as DRGs. In the 1981 analog compilation, water bodies north of the Columbia River were not incorporated into topology given that these water bodies (mainly rivers) were shown as lines as opposed to areas. This digital compilation replicates the 1981 compilation in this respect. Water body boundaries for areas north of the Columbia River are included in a separate feature class within the geodatabase and displayed in the map layout, but do not participate in topology. This dataset has two user-defined attributes, Ltype and FoldName. The text field Ltype consists of three comma-delimited parts: (1) identify the feature as a fold axis ("f.a"); (2) identify the type of fold as syncline or anticline; and, (3) characterize the certainty of location (certain, approx. located, or concealed). For plunging folds, an additional suffix ("plungeE_m or plungeW_m) is appended to indicate plunge direction as easterly or westerly and to symbolize the fold line with a marker line symbol (line terminated by an arrow). The field FoldName contains the names of folds named on the 1981 analog map. Other fold lines have null values. Fold lines for anticlines and synclines have identical line symbolization. Symbols depicting the sense of folds (paired arrows perpendicular to the fold axis) are generated from the point feature class EWH_fold_sense_symbols. Purpose: This dataset of folds defines the locations of the axial crests and troughs of folds mapped identified in the geologic map of the Eastern Willapa Hills, USGS Open File Report 81-674. Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.
