- Abstract:

This shapefile contains Chinese and Taiwanese sample locations from the USGS World Coal Quality Inventory Project published in 2010 (Tewalt and others, 2010) with major-, minor-, and trace-element chemistry of coals. Some chemical analyses were performed by the USGS Energy Program Geochemistry Laboratory in Denver, Colorado. This shapefile contains provisional chemistry of coals collected in China and Taiwan from studies related to USGS activities with international agencies. Chemical information includes the following: proximate and ultimate analyses as well as forms of sulfur on an as-received basis, ash fusion temperatures (degrees Fahrenheit, reducing atmosphere), free-swelling index (FSI), major and minor oxide values (on ash), and major-, minor-, and trace-element concentrations on a whole-coal basis. Commercial laboratory analyses follow ASTM standard methods listed below. Data generated by the USGS laboratory also utilize American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) methods, when possible. - Purpose:

The purpose is to provide an internally consistent dataset on available coal samples. This dataset can be used to identify future research areas, such as investigating factors that may affect technical utilization and environmental impacts from mining or using coal. To do so, a major assumption must be made that the samples analyzed are representative of the coals being mined. Note that both sample availability and adherence to standard collection procedures may vary.

Coal samples or analyses were obtained from the Geological Survey of China and the Geological Survey of Taiwan. Proximate, ultimate, forms of sulfur, ash fusion temperature, and free-swelling index data were generated by Geochemical Testing, Inc., of Somerset, Pennsylvania or Dickenson Labs, El Paso, Texas. Major-, minor- and trace-element concentrations were generated at the Geochemistry Laboratory of the USGS Energy Resources Program located in Denver, Colorado by Lisa Brazeau, John Bullock, Jr., James D.
