This 5-m interpolated bathymetric surface was created from 23 NOAA-NOS hydrographic survey datasets at varying resolutions. A high-resolution seamless bathymetric grid is a useful geophysical dataset for geologic framework studies. USGS resampled, interpolated, and merged these NOAA surveys into one seamless dataset to use in a geologic framework investigation.

Data collected under contract with NOAA for Nautical Charting must conform to IHO (International Hydrographic Organization) S-44 standards, which is 5-meters + 5% of water depth, horizontally in areas where under-keel clearance is of concern. This ensures that any sounding that falls outside of the maximum allowable horizontal position offset will not be used in depth calculations. Positioning confidence checks are performed daily during hydrographic surveys for NOAA and these checks can be viewed for the individual descriptive reports (see the source data for links to reports).
Data collected under contract with NOAA for Nautical Charting must conform to IHO (International Hydrographic Organization) S-44 standards, which is 0.5-meters vertically in areas where under-keel clearance is of concern. See the source data section for links to the report and a more detailed description of the vertical accuracy of individual hydrographic surveys.
This grid includes Reson 8101 and 7125 multibeam data collected during 23 M/V Atlantic Surveyor cruises conducted by SAIC for the purposes of updating NOAA nautical charts. The individual hydrographic survey grids can be downloaded by visiting NGDC's Interactive Map Interface to NOS Data and Products: <http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/bathymetry/hydro.html>
This bathymetric grid was created from several smaller NOAA-NOS multibeam datasets that were published by NGDC in BAG format at varying resolutions (50-centimeters to 4-meters; see Source Information for individual source survey information). In order to create a seamless bathymetric surface all BAG files were resampled, interpolated, and merged into a 5-m Esri format grid. No further data processing was conducted on the individual input datasets. These datasets are hydrographic data surveys collected to update NOAA nautical charts. You can download the source data from the NGDC Interactive Map Interface to NOS Data and Products <http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/bathymetry/hydro.html>. You can also download the source data listed in the source contributions from this page.
