- Abstract:
-
Between 2006 and 2011 Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), under contract by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Ocean Service (NOS), collected twenty-three hydrographic surveys totaling over 4100 square-kilometers of Reson multibeam bathymetric and Klein sidescan-sonar data for the purposes of updating nautical charts. Data extended from the entrance of Delaware Bay south to Parramore Island in water depths from about 3 to 35 meters below mean lower low water. Data were collected at a fixed 40-meter line spacing which provided 40-100 percent seafloor coverage for multibeam bathymetry. NOS releases processed bathymetry via an interactive map interface in bathymetry attributed grid (BAG) format. All twenty-three survey datasets were downloaded, merged, resampled, and interpolated to fill data gaps. Sidescan data products are limited within the Delmarva survey area and there are no multibeam backscatter data products available. The U.S. Geological Survey obtained the raw Reson multibeam data files from SAIC and NOAA for twenty of the hydrographic surveys and extracted the backscatter data using Quality Positioning Service's (QPS) Fledermaus FMGeocoder Toolbox (FMGT) to produce backscatter mosaics for the inner-continental shelf of the Delmarva Peninsula. Backscatter mosaics and regional seamless bathymetric datasets created from NOAA data are a valuable tool for characterizing seafloor geology, sediment transport pathways, and marine resources. Additionally, obtaining this near full seafloor coverage backscatter and bathymetry dataset from an existing source greatly increased project deliverables, geophysical survey efficiency, collaboration among government agencies, and the area over which geologic data interpretations can be conducted by the USGS.
- Purpose:
-
This 5-m interpolated hillshaded relief image was created from 23 NOAA-NOS hydrographic survey datasets at varying resolutions. High-resolution seamless bathymetric data products are useful for geologic framework studies. USGS resampled, interpolated, and merged these NOAA surveys into one seamless dataset to use in a geologic framework investigation.

This hillshaded relief image was created from several smaller NOAA-NOS multibeam datasets that were published by NGDC in BAG format at varying resolutions (50-centimeters to 4-meters; see Source Information for individual source survey information). In order to create a seamless bathymetric surface all .bag files were resampled, interpolated, and merged into a 5-m Esri format grid, then hillshaded. No further data processing was conducted on the individual input datasets. The input datasets were hydrographic data surveys collected to update NOAA nautical charts. You can download the source data from the NGDC Interactive Map Interface to NOS Data and Products <http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/bathymetry/hydro.html>. You can also download the source data listed in the source contributions from this page.

Data collected under contract with NOAA for Nautical Charting must conform to IHO (International Hydrographic Organization) S-44 standards, which is 5-meters + 5% of water depth, horizontally in areas where under-keel clearance is of concern. This ensures that any sounding that falls outside of the maximum allowable horizontal position offset will not be used in depth calculations. Positioning confidence checks are performed daily during hydrographic surveys for NOAA and these checks can be viewed for the individual descriptive reports (see the source data for links to reports).

These hydrographic reports and data provided the source RESON 8101 multibeam bathymetry data that went into this regional hillshaded-image. The data were acquired between 2006 and 2011 by SAIC for NOAA aboard M/V Atlantic Surveyor. A hull-mounted RESON SeaBat 8101(240 kHz) was used to acquire the multibeam echosounder data. Below is a list of references for the individual Hsurvey descriptive reports that used the Reson 8101 and are included in the regional bathymetry grid. Each of the 23 Hydrographic surveys used to create this hillshaded image were downloaded from NGDC as .bag files. The resolutions of individual .bag files varied from 50-cm to 4-m and some surveys were made up of more than 1 .bag file. Each .bag was downloaded and imported into QPS fledermaus software (version 7.4.1) and converted to a .sd file. For surveys with multiple .bag files, 'surfacemerge' in QPS FMcommand (version 7.4.1) was used to merge the individual .sd files into one file per survey.

After merging files within surveys, each survey .sd file was interpolated for 5-iterations in QPS Fledermaus (version 7.4.1) to fill gaps between adjacent survey lines in shallow water areas. Gaps along the landward boundary, especially near inlets and shoals, were allowed to persist after 5 -iterations and one internal gap in survey H12094 was left unfilled because ship tracklines did not cross over the shoalest point. Each survey .sd was resampled with Fledermaus to 5-m resolution and exported as a 32-bit GeoTIFF.

Survey GeoTIFFs were brought into ArcMap (version 10.2) in their original horizontal and vertical coordinate systems. The GeoTIFFS were reprojected from NAD83 UTM Zone 19N to WGS84 UTM Zone 19N using the reproject toolbox and the NAD83_to_WGS84_5 transformation. The 23 reprojected survey grids were then mosaicked into one raster dataset with no blending of grid values. The grids were mosaicked in by the order of their collection, so newest data were on top in overlapping areas.

The combined 5-m raster dataset within a larger project file geodatabase was then exported to a stand-alone Esri binary grid (ArcCatalog 10.2). Vertical coordinates were unchanged from the original .bag grids in MLLW tidal datum and final horizontal coordinates were in WGS84 UTM Zone 19N.

The final 5-m bathymetry grid containing all 23 hydrographic surveys was hillshaded using Spatial Analyst (ArcMap version 10.2) with an azimuth of 315, an altitude of 45, and z-factor of 2. The hillshaded grid was exported to GeoTIFF format within ArcMap by right-clicking and choosing export data. Cell-size and horizontal coordinate systems were unchanged.

USGS Open-File Report 2014-1262 hillshaded relief GeoTIFF from the Delmarva Peninusla (NOS_5m_hillshaded_TIFF.zip). The zip file contains a folder with the following a GeoTIFF (NOS_5m_INT_HS). A browse graphic (hillshade_5m.png), and a world file (NOS_5m_INT_HS.tfw) and FGDC CSDGM metadata files (nos_5mint.xml) in four standard formats are also included in the zip file.
