The sampling was part of a larger USGS study to gather data for assessing environmental changes over the past 150 years. The objective of the study was to expand upon the historical context of sea level and storms affecting coastal systems and how these systems might change under persistent or varying conditions. The data from this report add to a regional environmental change database that aids with the continuing effort to understand the evolution of coastal systems. This report serves as an archive for sedimentological, radiochemical, and microbiological data derived from the sediment cores and surface samples. Data is available for the sampling period in January 2013. Data is available in downloadable spreadsheet, Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) and Portable Document File (PDF) formats. Additional files included: ArcGIS shape files of the sample locations, detailed results of sediment grain size analyses, and formal Federal Geographic Data Committee (FDGC) metadata. Purpose: The 13CCT01_Foram_Counts.xlsx file includes all foraminiferal assemblage results from back-barrier and marsh wetlands collected on or around the Vermilion Bay region of southwest Louisiana on January 19, 2013, by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center(SPCMSC). Supplemental_Information: This publication contains data collected during USGS field activity number (FAN) 13CCT01. Foraminiferal density is calculated for each dataset. Logical_Consistency_Report: The data include date of collection, stained or unstained, percent of sample examined, foraminiferal counts per species, number of foraminifers per sample, number of species, volume of sample used, and density of foraminifera. Completeness_Report: This is a complete, processed foraminiferal data file for 13CCTO1-M01, 13CCT01-M02, 13CCTO1-M03 cores. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Using a spatula, replicate samples (A and B) of surface sediment (0-2 cm) were collected at each sampling location and sealed in 50 ml centrifuge tubes. A solution of 2 g Rose Bengal per liter of ethanol was added to each centrifuge tube to stain the living protoplasm. The stained samples were transferred to the USGS SPCMSC Foraminiferal Lab in St. Petersburg, FL. Prior to washing, the relative volume (ml) of sediment was recorded using the volume gradation on the tube (±1 ml). Each sample was washed over a 63 micron (µm) sieve under warm water; in some cases, an additional wash was necessary to remove clay particulates. The remaining sample (>63 µm size fraction) was oven-dried at 60 °C to remove moisture and then reweighed to assess the weight of the sand fraction. Then, the dried sample was dry sieved to separate it into 63-125 microns, 125-250 microns, and >250 microns sub-fractions. In most cases, the entire >125 micron fraction was spread across a 45-square, hole-punched tray, one or more times, for examination under a microscope. When a stained specimen (indicating the possibility that it was alive at collection) was encountered, it was picked up with a wet brush and dropped through a hole in the tray onto a stationary 60-square micropaleontological slide for later assemblage work (sorting and identification). Both A and B samples were picked, sorted, and counted individually and then later combined to provide a complete representation of the living foraminiferal community. Dead (non-stained) benthic foraminifera were picked onto the same micropaleontological slide and processed in the same manner as living specimens.
