The sampling was part of a larger USGS study to gather data for assessing environmental changes over the past 150 years. The objective of the study was to expand upon the historical context of sea level and storms affecting coastal systems and how these systems might change under persistent or varying conditions. The data from this report add to a regional environmental change database that aids with the continuing effort to understand the evolution of coastal systems. This report serves as an archive for sedimentological, radiochemical, and microbiological data derived from the sediment cores and surface samples. Data is available for the sampling period in January 2013. Data is available in downloadable spreadsheet, Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) and Portable Document File (PDF) formats. Additional files included: ArcGIS shape files of the sample locations, detailed results of sediment grain size analyses, and formal Federal Geographic Data Committee (FDGC) metadata. Purpose: The 13CCT01_Physical_Paramaters.xlsx file includes all bulk lithologic analysis results from back-barrier wetlands collected on or around the Vermilion Bay region of southwest Louisiana on January, 19 2013 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center. Supplemental_Information: This publication contains data collected during field activity number (FAN) 13CCT01. Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: The physical parameters reported in the tables were analyzed at the USGS SPCMSC sedimentology lab. These lithologic data have not been independently verified for accuracy. Replicate analyses of loss on ignition are reported for quality assurance. Logical_Consistency_Report: The data included in each spreadsheet are: core ID, date of collection, sample depth interval in core (cm), water content, dry bulk density, porosity, and loss on ignition. Completeness_Report: This is a complete processed physical parameters data file for the 13CCT01-M01, 13CCT01-M02, 13CCT01-M03 marsh cores. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Core lengths varied from 48 to 68 cm and compaction was less than ten cm in all cores. Cores were stored cold and upright and returned to the St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center where they were sub-sectioned. Cores were sectioned at 1-cm intervals over the entire length of the core. Porosity and dry bulk density were determined on approximately 50 mL of wet sediment packed into a syringe with 0.5 mL graduations. Water content was determined as the fraction of mass loss relative to the initial mass after drying at 60 °C for 48 hours; porosity was estimated from water content and assuming density of water was 1.00 g cm-3. Dry bulk density was determined as the dry mass normalized to the initial wet measured volume. Bulk organic matter content was determined by loss-on-ignition on dried, homogenized samples. A small aliquot of each sample (3Ð5 grams [g]) was weighed in porcelain crucibles, dried at 110 °C for 2 hours, re-weighed and then combusted at 550 °C in a muffle furnace for 6 hours. Samples were held at 60 °C in the furnace until post-combustion weights could be recorded. The loss-on-ignition or organic matter content were estimated by the ratio of mass loss during combustion at 550 °C to mass after drying at 110 °C . Approximately 10 percent of the samples were replicated.
