Description:
Abstract:
A benthic habitat polygon coverage has been created of the coral reef ecosystem within the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force Watershed Partnership Initiative Faga'alu Bay priority study area, Tutuila, American Samoa. Polygons were hand-digitized from visual interpretation of WorldView-2 satellite imagery and satellite-derived pseudobathymetry. We also utilized in situ knowledge from underwater photography and videography.
Purpose:
This mapping effort was carried out as a part of a USGS effort to understand the geologic and oceanographic processes of coral reef systems in the United States and its Pacific Island Trust Territories. It is intended to provide a baseline inventory of benthic habitat resources of the coral reef system within the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force Watershed Partnership Initiative Faga'alu Bay priority study area, Tutuila, American Samoa, for use by scientists, managers, and the general public. The data can be used with geographic information systems (GIS) software for research purposes.
