Description:
Abstract:
This dataset represents counties limited to the extent of the Pond Creek coal zone resource areas.
Purpose:
This dataset can be used to display counties limited to the extent of the Pond Creek coal zone resource areas. It is available in shapefile and Zipped Keyhole Markup Language (KMZ) formats, and can be viewed using ArcGIS, Google Earth, or any software package that supports these data formats.
Supplemental_Information:
Resource areas are only a subset of the entire areal extent of the Pond Creek coal zone. This resource model for the Pond Creek coal must be considered preliminary, because the correlation of the zone continues to be evaluated in West Virginia. The file has been generalized from detailed geologic coverages found in Professional Paper 1625-C. The Pond Creek coal zone is known by multiple names, depending on locale, even within a single State. The purpose of Professional Paper 1625 is to release the interpretation of assessment and modeling data for the top-producing coal beds and zones in the northern and central Appalachian basin coal regions. The dataset has been generalized and is useful only in regional studies.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Deductive_Estimate: Generalized with 250 meter weed tolerance.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Topology for this data set was built using the CLEAN command within ARC/INFO, version 7.2.1. This command eliminates dangling nodes, calculates intersections of arcs, eliminates redundant arcs, and creates a polygon attribute table. This data set does not contain dangles or redundant arcs.
Completeness_Report:
The polygons in this coverage are a general representation of county-based information for this coal bed within the geographic areas of resource calculation for the 2000 National Coal Assessment. Some small areas of coal outcrop may have been lost in the generalization process and will not match the detailed coverages available for this coal bed elsewhere in Professional Paper 1625-C. All internal no-coal and thin-coal areas have been dissolved for display purposes.

This file was the primary source for WV crop. WV-1 was the source for all crop in following 7.5' quadrangles: Montgomery, Gauley Bridge, Powellton, Beckwith, Fayetteville, Pax, and Oak Hill quad. Outcrop was also present for the eastern portion of Eskdale and Dorothy quads and the western half of Ansted quad.

These maps were the only source of crop in these 7.5' quadrangles: Julian, Racine, Madison, Williams Mountain, Whitesville, Holden, Logan, Amherstdale, Lorado, Pilot Knob, Eccles, Man, Mallory, Oceana, and Matheny. The Dorothy quad complimented crop from WV-1. Most of the crop in Belle, Clothier, Arnett, and McGraws quads was present on these maps. WV-2 was the secondary source for WV mines.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
In VA, DXF files (VA-1) were converted to ARC/INFO line covers. In Arcedit, lines were connected for closure and mined-out areas were edited to remove barrier walls and pillars.
Process_Date: 1998
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
All maps (WV-2, WV-3, WV-4 and WV-5) were manually digitized on a tablet using ARC/INFO.
Process_Date: 1998
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
West Virginia crop data was appended together. More recent data, allmng.e00 (WV-1), were used where available instead of maps (WV-2, WV-3, WV- 4 or WV-5).
Process_Date: 1998
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
WV data required a line limiting the resources to 14" thick or a line representing the limit of available data. A coal thickness model was developed for the Pond Creek in Earthvision (see metadata for c9120is.e00) using stratigraphic data stored in the National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS). The 14" isoline was manually edited where there was limited data. This line is the northern extent of the coal zone in WV.
Process_Date: 1998 - 1999
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Missing WV crop data were modeled for each of the following 7.5' quadrangles: Bentree, Cedar Groove, Summersville Dam, Williamson and Panther. WV crop data were modeled for parts of these quads: Belle, Ansted, Eskdale, Arnett, McGraws, Matewan and Panther. A coal structure model was deleloped for the Pond Creek in Earthvision (see metadata for c9120st.e00) using stratigraphic data stored in the National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS). The structure model was subtracted from USGS 3 arc-second Digital Elevation Model. The resultant raster data model was contoured at zero to produce a derived outcrop line. The derived outcrop line closely matched existing crop, so the derived crop was used to fill gaps and is only approximate.
Process_Date: 1999
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
KY crop (KY-1) was clipped to resources by the 14" thickness isolines from the polygon coverage of coal thickness categories (KY-2).
Process_Date: 1999
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
All digital data were then appended into one data set. This data set was edited to resolve inconsistencies between maps and to incorporate revisions. Polygon topology was built and a cleaning function was performed. Polygons were attributed using the codes described within this document.

Process_Description:
Generalized the resource area coverage for coal bed using 250 meter weed tolerance and pointremove option. Cleaned and built topology.

Intersected a county coverage with the generalized resource areas. Dropped unnecessary items from intersected cover and dissolved on FIPS code to remove internal no-coal areas.

Created a shape file from the combined county/resource area coverage. In ArcView, dissolved on the FIPS code so that all the individual polygons for a county became one polygon- created a new shape file.
