The Quaternary sediments prominently include the 150-2 ka Searles Lake Formation, described and named herein. The Searles Lake Formation is divided into seven, dominantly lacustrine units, which can be correlated with subsurface units known from drill cores in now-dry Searles Lake, in the center of the valley. Together, these surface and subsurface sediments help chart the region's complex recent climatic history. This release contains data for 6 different maps, The Pinnacles Area, Poison Canyon, Randsburg Wash, Salt Wells Valley, Searles Valley, and Valley Wells Wash in support of Professional Paper 1727. The geology of each mapped area is described by a series of feature classes including: a topographic base map, mapped area boundary polygon, geologic lines, geologic polygons, structural measurements, and isopachs of Unit D. Purpose: This professional paper describes and provides maps of the geology of Searles Valley. Along with subsurface sediments, the surface geology records the region's complex recent climatic history. Supplemental_Information: This metadata file was written to provide an overview for the entire dataset. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The data was edited at a scale of 1:50,000 or 1:10,00 and higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:50,000 or 1:10,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Acknowledgment of the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data. The smaller-scale quadrangles were not precisely edge mapped during the mosaicking process. Geology mapped on enlarged prints of black and white aerial photography at various scales equal to or larger than 48,000 and 10,000, appropriate for the map scales. The mapped geology was transferred to USGS topographic maps using a projector. The topographic bases were scanned and georeferenced. The geologic data were vectorized and attributed from scanned bases. The initial digital compilation was performed in earlier versions of ESRI ArcInfo, and then migrated to and symbolized using ArcGIS 9.3.
