This is a geologic map that depicts deposits from the 2006 eruption of Augustine Volcano, Alaska, including pyroclastic flows, avalanches, lahars, and lava flows and domes. Deposits from eruptions prior to 2006 are not differentiated. Purpose: This database was constructed in order to produce a geologic map as a basis for understanding processes involved in the 2006 eruption of Augustine Volcano. Supplemental_Information: All the geologic map information used to publish Plate 1 of Chapter 8 in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1796 is contained in this digital database. This map shows the distribution and relations of deposits from the 2006 eruption of Augustine Volcano on Augustine Island, Alaska. The database includes feature classes that depict map units and the contacts between them, station locations, and features used for geographic reference on the published map. For clarity in browsing the geodatabase and to separate new geologic data from geographic reference data, feature classes have been separated into two feature datasets; Geography and Geology. Geography contains the feature classes AugustinePlaceNames, Contour_100m, and Contour_100Anno and the annotation relationship ContourAnnoRelationsship. Geology contains the feature classes Contacts, MapUnits, Stations, and Unit_Anno; the annotation relationship class Anno_40_41; and the topology relationship class Geology_2006_Topology. This metadata file describes the original ESRI personal geodatabase and it's objects in general. For more detailed metadata, see the Entity_and_Attribute_Information and Entity_and_Attribute_Overview elements within the metadata embedded within the individual datasets (using ArcCatalog) or the metadata file for each shapefile in the shapefile version of this geodatabase. Use_Constraints: Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:20,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:20,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Map unit polygons were created from the lines and both lines and polygons were edited while maintaining polygon-and-boundary topology. Metadata were created only prior to release. Entity_Type_Definition_Source: Author Overview_Description: Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: This metatdata file for the Augustine2006.mdb geodatabase was written to provide an overview for the complete database in its form as an ESRI ArcGIS 9.3 personal geodatabase. For more informative descriptions of the attributes please see the metadata embedded within each feature class (using ArcCatalog) or the metadata file associated with each shapefile in the shapefile version of this geodatabse. Note that if you are using the shapefile versions of the datasets contained within the geodatabase 1)field names are truncated to 10 characters and 2) only the descriptions of feature classes in this file will be relevant. That is, relationships between feature classes, as they exist as objects within the geodatabase cannot be exported to any format immediately usable with shapefiles. Feature classes in the geodatabase are organized into two feature datasets: Geography and Geology_2006. Geography is provided only for reference while Geology_2006 contains new data acquired during the mapping of the deposits resulting from the eruption of 2006. Within Geography are three feature classes: AugustinePlaceNames; Contour_100m; and Contour_100mAnno; and one relationship class: ContourAnnoRelationship. AugustinePlaceNames was used for positioning place name labels around the island in the final published map. The Name field in this feature class holds the name of the feature. Contour_100m is a line feature class of topographic contour lines generated from a 1:25,000 scale digital elevation model of the island generated in 1990 from photography collected for that purpose. 100m interval contours were generated using the Contour tool in the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension. The field Contour stores the elevation of the contour line in meters. Contour_100mAnno is an ArcGIS-generated feature-linked annotation class used to position labels for Contour_100m. All fields in this class are the default fields created by ArcGIS and have not been modified. The relationship between this annotation class and Contour_100m is managed through the ContourAnnoRelationship relationship class generated automatically by ArcGIS during the creation of feature-linked annotation. The Geology_2006 feature dataset contains four feature classes: Contacts; MapUnits; MapUnits_Anno; and Stations, one annotation relationship class: Anno_40_41, and one topology relationship class: Geology_2006_topology. The line feature class Contacts shows the location of contacts mapped between the geologic rock units stored in MapUnits. The Linetype field stores the nature and scientific confidence of the contact. MapUnits is a polygon feature class showing the locations of geologic rock units that were deposited as a result of the 2006 eruption. The field Unit stores a short abbreviation for the name of the map unit that correlates with unit abbreviations found in the correlation of map units (CMU) diagram on the published map (Plate 1, USGS PP 1796) and elsewhere in the publication. UnitType stores a brief term describing the type of unit (avalanche deposit, block and ash flow deposit, fall deposit, lahar deposit, lava, pyroclastic flow deposit, or talus deposit). DateFormed stores a date-formatted value that describes when a deposit was formed and generally correlates with well-defined seismic events (see larger publication text). FirstObs is a field storing a date-formatted value that describes when the deposit was first observed, whether by personnel in the field, remotely located stationary cameras, or in satellite imagery. The field Comments stores text generally describing caveats to the EventNo pick. EventNo is a field storing during which eruptive event (as generally defined by the seismic record) the deposit was formed. Note that units formed during EventNo's 1 and 2 which were destroyed or covered by later activity are not shown on the published map plate for clarity but are described in some detail in the publication text. MapUnits_Anno is an ArcGIS-generated annotation feature class used to label the MapUnits polygons. All fields in this class are the default fields created by ArcGIS and have not been modified. Stations is a point feature class showing the locations of relevant field stations occupied during the mapping of the 2006 deposits. The field Geologist stores the name of the geologist who established the station. StationID stores a value generally in the format YYVVGGGNNN where YY = two digit year, VV = two character volcano code, GGG = three character geologist abbreviation, and NNN = a zero-padded three digit sequential number. Date_ is a field storing a date-formatted value recording the date of occupation. Latdd and Longdd store, respectively, the latidude and longitude in decimal degrees. DatumID stores the coordinate system datum against which Latdd and Longdd are referenced. Elevm is a field showing the elevation of the station in meters. The field LocDescr stores a description of the station location. Comments stores extra descriptions of the geology at the station. Unit stores the field-call of the unit in which the station is located. Note, that this may not correlate with the co-located MapUnit. Image is a field that stores whether or not a photo or photos were taken of the area. Search the AVO image database for possible entries (http://www.avo.alaska.edu/). The field Sampled stores whether or not a sample was collected at the station. Contact the author or AVO for more information about samples or analytical results. The field StratSxn records whether or not there is a longer stratigraphic section description at the station location. Contact the author, the occupying geologist, or AVO for more information. The relationship betwen the MapUnits_Anno annotation class and MapUnits is controlled through the relationship class Anno_40_41 which was generated automatically by ArcGIS during the creation of feature-linked annotation. A topology relationship class, Geology_2006_Topology, was created to primarily validate the topology rule that MapUnit polygon boundaries must be coincident with lines from Contacts.
