The lower row of gray histograms illustrates the climate of North America in regard to precipitation variables--here, the height of each column indicates the number of grid points that fall within the precipitation range covered by the column. The black histograms illustrate the distribution of each species in relation to the given precipitation variable. Here, the height of each column represents the percentage of the total number of grid points where the species is present (given as "n" on the right side) that occur within the precipitation range covered by the column.
