  <dc:description>&lt;p&gt;Two major earthquake (7.0&amp;le;M&amp;lt;8.0) and one great earthquake (M&lt;span&gt;&amp;ge;8.0)&amp;nbsp;occurred&amp;nbsp;during this reporting period. The major shocks were a magnitude 7.6 earthquake off the coast of Hokkaido, Japan, on July 2, and a magntidue 7.0 quake off the coast of South Island, New Zealand, on August 10. A magntiude 8.2 earthquake struck an area south of the Mariana Islands on August 8. No significant earthquakes occurred in the United States during the months of July and August.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;</dc:description>
