<dc:description>Water-level measurements have been read in 52 cased boreholes in the San Francisco bay region. These measurements are compared to water-table depths determined by P-wave velocity. A velocity in excess of 1200 m/s is taken as the depth of the upper surface of the water table. This method works best in saturated alluvium, and fails in dry rock because of P-wave velocities greater than 1200 m/s.</dc:description>
