Long-distance migratory shorebirds are among the groups of birds declining most rapidly, yet we frequently lack detailed knowledge about the routes and stopover sites they use during their hemisphere-spanning migrations. This is especially true for species that migrate through mid-continental regions in the Western Hemisphere. We therefore used satellite transmitters to track 212 individuals of 6 shorebird species during their southward migrations—Pluvialis dominica (American Golden-Plover), Limosa haemastica (Hudsonian Godwit), Tringa flavipes (Lesser Yellowlegs), and Calidris subruficollis (Buff-breasted Sandpiper), C. melanotos (Pectoral Sandpiper), and Bartramia longicauda (Upland Sandpiper)—as they crossed the Amazon Basin of South America, a region from which reports of shorebird numbers are increasing but remain relatively rare. Our results make clear that the Amazon Basin provides stopover habitat for a large number of shorebirds: more than 74% of individuals tracked crossing the Amazon Basin stopped over in the region for an average of 2–14 days, with some spending the entire nonbreeding season there. All species selected stopover sites along the region’s many rivers and lakes, while within stopover sites each species exhibited distinct habitat preferences. The timing of stopovers within sub-basins of the Amazon Basin also coincided with periods of low water, when the muddy, shallow water habitats preferred by most shorebirds are likely plentiful. Together, our results highlight the need for detailed investigations into shorebird abundance and distribution within the Amazon Basin, threats to shorebirds within particular subbasins, and links between shorebird conservation efforts and those targeting the myriad other species that inhabit this dynamic, hyper-diverse region.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford We used Royle-Nichols multi-species occupancy models to evaluate if (i) distance to and size of local communities, (ii) local human population density, (iii) distance to and size of urban areas, (iv) local level of protection, and (v) alternative availability of aquatic protein affected the (a) species richness, (b) aggregated abundance and (c) biomass, (d) mean reproductive rate of species, and (e) mean abundance of functional groups and (f) individual species. Community distance was the main determinant of wildlife declines, impacting species up to 5-km from communities, but three game species exhibited higher abundances within this distance. Other drivers, such as community size and urban neighbourhood, also contributed to species declines. Availability of alternative aquatic protein buffered declines of only two species and local protection increased species richness and aggregate abundance. These findings can help inform evidence-based conservation strategies in tropical SURs. Our results suggest that preventing habitat loss beyond 5-km radius from communities can promote a healthy source-sink dynamic for populations of game species. Furthermore, game management measures could encourage targeting harvest-tolerant species and the protection of all game species.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.biocon.2023.110206","usgsCitation":"Sampaio, R., Morato, R., Royle, A., Abrahams, M., Peres, C., and Chiarello, A., We used the most recent data available: dolphins identified by unique dorsal fin marks during wet and dry season surveys conducted from 2004 to 2008. Dolphin encounter histories were analyzed in the Closed Capture Robust Design framework, with the top model including random movement, constant survival, and capture-recapture probabilities that varied by secondary periods. Survival of marked adults was estimated at 0.99 (95% CI = 0.97 to 1.00). Population estimates for all adults (marked and unmarked) averaged 31 animals (SD = 13.8), and for all dolphins (all adults and calves), 41 animals (SD = 17.2). Coastal bottlenose dolphins face numerous threats, including ship strikes, oil spills, conflict with recreational and industrial fisheries, other negative human interactions, biotoxins, chemicals, noise, freshwater discharge, and coastal development. Further, small populations are, in general, at increased risk due to reduced resiliency and recovery potential when exposed to such threats and to expected environmental and demographic stochasticity. These historic estimates of abundance and survival are critical for establishing a reference state and indicate a need for ongoing monitoring of the small dolphin population while the Aragua coast is still, as of yet, relatively little impacted by humans. Should coastal development increase (as is the global trend) and/or environmental catastrophes (e.g., harmful algal blooms, hurricanes, and oil spills) occur, these historic estimates will be essential for assessing impacts and guiding management and conservation interventions. Our results show year-round dolphin presence and highlight the Venezuelan coastal–oceanic landscape as an area of both future research and conservation importance.

","language":"English","publisher":"Aquatic Mammals","doi":"10.1578/AM.47.1.2021.10","usgsCitation":"Cobarrubia-Russo, S., Barber-Meyer, S., Barreto, G.R., and Molero-Lizarraga, A., 2021, Historic population estimates for bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Aragua, Venezuela indicate monitoring need: Aquatic Mammals, v. 1, no. 47, p. 10-20, https://doi.org/10.1578/AM.47.1.2021.10.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"10","endPage":"20","ipdsId":"IP-118661","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":382151,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Venezuela","state":"Aragua","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -67.291259765625,\n              10.541821094659076\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.87353515625,\n              10.477008906900293\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.818603515625,\n              10.3257278721883\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.6318359375,\n              10.109486058403773\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.445068359375,\n              10.001310360636928\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.2802734375,\n              9.903921416774978\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.03857421875,\n              9.709057068618208\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.95068359374999,\n              9.611582210984674\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.0166015625,\n              9.44906182688142\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.73095703125,\n              9.308148692484803\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.51123046875,\n              9.524914302345891\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.544189453125,\n              10.055402736564236\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.03857421875,\n              10.152746165571939\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.291259765625,\n              10.541821094659076\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"1","issue":"47","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2021-01-15","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cobarrubia-Russo, Sergio 0000-0002-3351-1929","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3351-1929","contributorId":247716,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Cobarrubia-Russo","given":"Sergio","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":49631,"text":"Laboratorio de Ecosistemas y Cambio Global, Centro de Ecología, Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":808175,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Barber-Meyer, Shannon 0000-0002-3048-2616","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3048-2616","contributorId":217939,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barber-Meyer","given":"Shannon","affiliations":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":808176,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Barreto, Guillermo R.","contributorId":247743,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Barreto","given":"Guillermo","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":808205,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Molero-Lizarraga, Alimar 0000-0003-1646-9818","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1646-9818","contributorId":247717,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Molero-Lizarraga","given":"Alimar","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":49634,"text":"Unidad de Diversidad Biológica, Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas IVIC","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":808206,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

In Brazil, the manatee population is listed as endangered with an estimated population size of 500–1,000. Historic hunting, recent habitat degradation, and fisheries bycatch have decreased the population size. The Amazonian manatee is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN with unknown population sizes within Brazil. The Antillean manatee occurs in sympatry with the Amazonian manatee in Brazil and hybridization has been previously indicated. To provide information on the genetic structure, diversity, and degree of hybridization in the sympatric zone near the Amazon River mouth, the mitochondrial DNA control region and 13 nuclear microsatellite markers were assessed on the two species. Samples were analyzed from the Antillean subspecies across its distribution in Brazil (n = 78) and from the Amazonian species (n = 17) at the Amazon River mouth and inland mainstem river. To assess the previously defined evolutionary significant units of Antillean manatees in the area, an additional 11 samples from Venezuela and Guyana were included. The Antillean manatee was found to be a single population in Brazil and had lower than average number of alleles (3.00), expected heterozygosity (0.34), and haplotype diversity (0.15) when compared to many other manatee populations. The low values may be influenced by the small population size and extended pressures from anthropogenic threats. Gene flow was identified with Venezuela/Guyana in admixed Antillean Brazil samples, although the two populations were found to be moderately divergent. The nuclear loci in Venezuela/Guyana Antillean manatee samples indicated high differentiation from the samples collected in the Amazon River (FST = 0.35 and RST = 0.18, p = 0.0001). No indication of nuclear hybridization was found except for a single sample, “Poque” that had been identified previously. The distribution of Antillean manatees in Brazil is extensive and the areas with unique habitat and threats would benefit from independent management and conservation actions. Gene flow, resulting in genetic diversity and long-term population stability, could be improved in the southern range through habitat restoration, and the establishments of travel corridors and protected areas, which are particularly important for successful parturition and neonatal calf survival.

","language":"English","publisher":"Frontiers Their tawny to cinnamon-colored plumages are generally uniform, featuring subtle variation in hue and saturation across this range. In contrast to their conservative plumage, substantial vocal differences occur among geographically isolated or parapatric populations. Working within the framework of a comprehensive molecular phylogeny, we reexamined species limits in the G. rufula complex, basing taxonomic recommendations on diagnostic differences in vocalizations and considering identifiable differences in plumage where pertinent. We identified 16 populations for species designation, including seven populations previously described as subspecies and, remarkably, six new species described herein. Within one of these species, we identified less robust vocal differences between populations that we designate as subspecies. Geographic variation exists within another species, but its critical evaluation requires additional material. Taxonomic revisions of groups consisting of cryptic species, like the Grallaria rufula complex, are imperative for their conservation. Rather than widespread species as currently defined, these complexes can comprise many range-restricted taxa at higher risk of extinction given the continuing human pressures on their habitats.
","language":"English","publisher":"Magnolia Press","doi":"10.11646/zootaxa.4817.1.1","usgsCitation":"Isler, M.L., Chesser, T., Robbins, M.B., Cuervo, A.M., Cadena, C., and Hosner, However, it has been suggested that the complex, populations of which occur in humid montane forests from Venezuela to Bolivia, comprises a suite of vocally distinct yet morphologically cryptic species. We sequenced nuclear and mitochondrial DNA for 80 individuals from across the distribution of the complex to determine the extent of genetic variation between and within described taxa. Our results revealed 18 geographically coherent clades separated by substantial genetic divergence: 14 within rufula, 3 within blakei, and 1 corresponding to G. rufocinerea (Bicolored Antpitta), a species with distinctive plumage found to be nested within the complex. Neither G. rufula nor G. blakei as presently defined was monophyletic. Although 6 of the 7 recognized subspecies of G. rufula were monophyletic, several subspecies contained substantial genetic differentiation. Genetic variation was largely partitioned across recognized geographic barriers, especially across deep river valleys in Peru and Colombia. Coalescent modeling identified 17 of the 18 clades as significantly differentiated lineages, whereas analyses of vocalizations delineated 16 biological species within the complex. The G. rufula complex seems unusually diverse even among birds of the humid Andes, a prime location for cryptic speciation; however, the extent to which other dispersal-limited Andean species groups exhibit similar degrees of cryptic differentiation awaits further study.","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.1093/auk/ukaa009","usgsCitation":"Chesser, T., Isler, M.L., Native to Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, western French Guiana, and northern Brazil, the species is now distributed throughout Florida’s southern peninsula. Examination of live and preserved acara from Central Florida, heretofore identified as Black Acara, reveal the presence of an additional acara species, the Chanchita, Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840). The Chanchita is native to Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, southern Brazil, and northeastern Argentina. Despite similarities, Black Acara and Chanchita can be distinguished by number of anal-fin spines, body and fin color, caudal-fin pattern, and head, nape, and upper-flank scale-rim pigment. The Chanchita is established in multiple Central Florida drainages with the earliest known record from July 27, 2000. The Chanchita has not been found to co-occur with the Black Acara. The presence of Chanchita in more than one Central Florida spring and the widespread distribution of this previously unreported introduced species may be of concern to natural resource managers.
","language":"English","publisher":"REABIC","doi":"10.3391/bir.2020.9.1.18","usgsCitation":"Robins, R.H., Brown, M.E., and Crutchfield, R.A., 2020, Identification of Acara We conducted this study at Yacambú National Park in Venezuela from 2002 to 2008. Clutch size was 1.99 (SE 0.01) and fresh egg mass was 2.35 g (0.02). Females incubated the eggs for 19.74 d (0.37), and nestlings left nests at 17.37 d (0.18). Nest attentiveness (percent time spent on the nest) increased across the incubation period while brooding attentiveness decreased as nestlings aged. Brooding effort began with similar attentiveness as at the end of incubation. Food provisioning rate and feeding rate per nestling increased as nestlings aged. Growth rates (K) based on mass, tarsus, and wing chord were relatively slow at 0.375, 0.246, and 0.257, respectively. The nesting season extended from mid-March to late June for 7 years and the average nesting season length was 64.5 d (3.68) with a median of May 4. Nest success was 22%. Nest predation was the cause of 77% of nest failures with a total daily predation rate of 0.030 (0.002). Results obtained from the literature demonstrated that tropical wrens averaged smaller clutch sizes and longer incubation periods than relatives in the temperate region.
","language":"English","publisher":"Allen Press","doi":"10.1676/18-12","usgsCitation":"Arslan, N.S., and Martin, T.E., 2019, Reproductive biology of Grey-breasted Wood-Wren (Henicorhina leucophrys): A comparative study of tropical and temperate wrens: Wilson Journal of Ornithology, v. 131, no. 1, p. 1-11, https://doi.org/10.1676/18-12.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"11","ipdsId":"IP-091643","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":501024,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/11491/1636","text":"External Repository"},{"id":395046,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Venezuela","otherGeospatial":"Yacambú National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -69.88677978515625,\n              9.446352499964977\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.46929931640624,\n              9.446352499964977\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.46929931640624,\n              9.82138870534266\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.88677978515625,\n              9.82138870534266\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.88677978515625,\n              9.446352499964977\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"131","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Arslan, Necmiye Sahin","contributorId":272527,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Arslan","given":"Necmiye","email":"","middleInitial":"Sahin","affiliations":[{"id":50219,"text":"um","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":832048,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Martin, Thomas E. 0000-0002-4028-4867 tmartin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4028-4867","contributorId":1208,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"Thomas","email":"tmartin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":832049,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The species was first documented in Dania Beach, Florida (northwestern Caribbean) in 1985. Since that time the species has expanded its range rapidly to the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea. Since its introduction P. volitans has changed community structure and biodiversity of Caribbean reef communities and other coastal tropical ecosystems. Continuous introductions (accidental or intentional), limited natural predators, naïve-range prey behavior, high predation rates on competitors, continuous reproduction, and an extended period of larval dispersal have been the keys for successful invasion and rapid range extension of P. volitans. This invasion has become so severe that it has been recognized as one of the world’s top conservation issues. Here, we review the life history, behavior, and historical and contemporary genetic patterns that facilitate expansion and the colonization process. A greater understanding of lionfish biology, ecology, and the changes related to its present condition as a super-invader could improve current and future management strategies and new detection and response methodologies. We also examine new invasion frontiers that this species has the potential to colonize such as the eastern Pacific. This information will provide managers, the scientific community, and the civil society better tools for eradication, control and management of future invasions of this and other invasive species.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.rsma.2019.100793","usgsCitation":"Diaz-Ferguson, E., and Hunter, M., 2019, Life history, genetics, range expansion and High-resolution multiproxy analysis from four sites show freshwater wetlands transitioned to mangrove environments 4–3.6 ka, followed by estuarine environments 3.4–2.8 ka, during a period of enhanced climate variability. We calculate a RSLR rate of 0.67 ± 0.1 mm yr−1 between ~4.2–2.8 ka, 4–6 times lower than current rates. Despite low RSLR rates, the rapid mangrove to estuarine transgression was facilitated by a period of prolonged droughts and frequent storms. These findings suggest that with higher and accelerating RSLR today, enhanced climate variability could further hasten the loss of mangrove-lined coastlines, compounded by the reductions in natural flow to the coast caused by water management. Climate variability is nonlinear, and when superimposed on increases in RSLR, can complicate estimated trajectories of coastal inundation for resource management and urban planning.
","language":"English","publisher":"Nature","doi":"10.1038/s41467-019-11138-4","usgsCitation":"Jones, M., Wingard, G.L., Stackhouse, B., Keller, K., Willard, D.A., Marot, M.E., Landacre, B.D., and Bernhardt, C.E., 2019, Rapid inundation of the southern Florida coastline despite low relative sea-level rise rates during the late-Holocene: Nature Communications, v. 10, no. 1, 3231, 13 p., https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-11138-4.","productDescription":"3231, 13 p.","ipdsId":"IP-099502","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":411,"text":"National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":24693,"text":"Climate Research and Development","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":467439,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-11138-4","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":366473,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Bahamas, Belize, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, United States, Venezuela","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Florida Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -81.123046875,\n 26.15543796871355\n ],\n [\n -85.4296875,\n 22.024545601240337\n ],\n [\n -88.505859375,\n 18.187606552494625\n ],\n [\n -88.76953125,\n 16.003575733881327\n ],\n [\n -83.671875,\n 16.25686733062344\n ],\n [\n -66.9287109375,\n 11.43695521614319\n ],\n [\n -65.9619140625,\n 10.876464994816295\n ],\n [\n -64.51171875,\n 10.746969318460001\n ],\n [\n -68.37890625,\n 19.518375478601566\n ],\n [\n -76.46484375,\n 25.799891182088334\n ],\n [\n -77.0361328125,\n 27.176469131898898\n ],\n [\n -81.123046875,\n 26.15543796871355\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"10","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2019-07-19","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jones, Miriam 0000-0002-6650-7619","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6650-7619","contributorId":201994,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"Miriam","affiliations":[{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":768145,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wingard, G. Recent work divided the Golden Tegu into four separate species, leaving the specific identity of Golden Tegus in Florida unknown. We used morphometric and mitochondrial data to determine the species identity and likely area of geographic origin for a specimen of Golden Tegu collected in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Our results indicate Cryptic Golden Tegus (Tupinambis cryptus) are the species established in Florida. Resulting probabilistic seismic hazard maps show peak ground acceleration, modified Mercalli intensity, and spectral accelerations at 0.2 and 1 s periods for 2%, 10%, and 50% probabilities of exceedance in 50 yrs. We use these hazard models in conjunction with the Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER) model to calculate economic and casualty risk. Risk is computed by incorporating the new hazard values amplified by soil, PAGER fragility/vulnerability equations, and LandScan 2012 estimates of population exposure. We also calculate building design values using the guidelines established in the building code provisions. Resulting hazard and associated risk is high along the northern and western coasts of South America, reaching damaging levels of ground shaking in Chile, western Argentina, western Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and in localized areas distributed across the rest of the continent where historical earthquakes have occurred. Constructing buildings and other structures to account for strong shaking in these regions of high hazard and risk should mitigate losses and reduce casualties from effects of future earthquake strong ground shaking. National models should be developed by scientists and engineers in each country using the best available science.
","language":"English","publisher":"Seismological Society of Here, we test predictions of four such hypotheses (seasonality, food limitation, nest predation and adult survival probability) by examining life-history traits and age-specific mortality rates of several species of thrushes (Turdinae) based on field studies at temperate and tropical sites and data gathered from the literature. Thrushes in the genus Catharus showed the typical pattern of slower life-history strategies in the tropics while co-occuring Turdus thrushes differed much less across latitudes. Seasonality is a broadly accepted hypothesis for latitudinal patterns, but the lack of concordance in latitudinal patterns between co-existing genera that experience the same seasonal patterns suggests seasonality cannot fully explain latitudinal trait variation in thrushes. Nest-predation also could not explain patterns based on our field data and literature data for these two genera. Total feeding rates were similar, and per-nestling feeding rates were higher at tropical latitudes in both genera, suggesting food limitation does not explain trait differences in thrushes. Latitudinal patterns of life histories in these two genera were closely associated with adult survival probability. Thus, our data suggest that environmental influences on adult survival probability may play a particularly strong role in shaping latitudinal patterns of life-history traits.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/jav.01113","usgsCitation":"Boyce, A.J., and Martin, T.E., 2017, Contrasting latitudinal patterns of life-history divergence in two genera of new world thrushes (Turdinae): Journal of Avian Biology, v. 48, no. 4, p. 581-590, https://doi.org/10.1111/jav.01113.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"581","endPage":"590","ipdsId":"IP-074228","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":348480,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States, Venezuela","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Coconino National Forest, Parque Nacional Yacambu","volume":"48","issue":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-01-18","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a0425bbe4b0dc0b45b453a3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Boyce, Andy J.","contributorId":200182,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Boyce","given":"Andy","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721320,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Martin, Thomas E. 0000-0002-4028-4867 tmartin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4028-4867","contributorId":1208,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"Thomas","email":"tmartin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":716722,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We assessed spatial habitat-use patterns of 10 adult female green turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting at Buck Island Reef National Monument, U.S. Virgin Islands (BIRNM) from  2011 – 2014. Turtles ranged in size from 89.0 – 115.9 cm CCL (mean + SD = 106.8 + 7.7 cm). The inter-nesting period across all turtles ranged from 31 July to 4 November, and sizes of the 50% core-use areas during inter-nesting ranged from 4.2 – 19.0 km2. Inter-nesting core-use areas were located up to1.4 km from shore and had bathymetry values ranging from -17.0 to -13.0 m. Seven of the ten turtles remained locally resident after the nesting season. Five turtles (50%) foraged around Buck Island, two foraged around the island of St. Croix, and the other three (30%) made longer-distance migrations to Antigua, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Venezuela. Further, five turtles had foraging centroids within protected areas. Delineating spatial areas and identifying temporal periods of nearshore habitat-use can be useful for natural resource managers with responsibility for overseeing vulnerable habitats and protected marine turtle populations.","language":"English","publisher":"Inter-Research","doi":"10.3354/esr00793","usgsCitation":"Hart, K.M., Iverson, A., Benscoter, A.M., Fujisaki, I., Cherkiss, M.S., Pollock, C., Lundgren, I., and Hillis-Starr, Z., 2017, Resident areas and migrations of female green turtles nesting at Buck Island Reef National Monument, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands: Endangered Species Research, v. 32, p. 89-101, https://doi.org/10.3354/esr00793.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"89","endPage":"101","ipdsId":"IP-075808","costCenters":[{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470078,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.3354/esr00793","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":335125,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"U.S. Virgin Islands","otherGeospatial":" Buck Island Reef National Monument, St. Croix","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -64.97863769531249,\n              17.59297594219941\n            ],\n            [\n              -64.97863769531249,\n              17.926475979176438\n            ],\n            [\n              -64.48013305664062,\n              17.926475979176438\n            ],\n            [\n              -64.48013305664062,\n              17.59297594219941\n            ],\n            [\n              -64.97863769531249,\n              17.59297594219941\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"32","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":5,"text":"Lafayette PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"589edf26e4b099f50d3dc590","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hart, Kristen M. 0000-0002-5257-7974 kristen_hart@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5257-7974","contributorId":1966,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hart","given":"Kristen","email":"kristen_hart@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":662994,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Iverson, Autumn 0000-0002-8353-6745 ariverson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8353-6745","contributorId":179150,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Iverson","given":"Autumn","email":"ariverson@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":662995,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Benscoter, Allison M.","contributorId":57781,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Benscoter","given":"Allison","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":662996,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Fujisaki, Ikuko","contributorId":38359,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Fujisaki","given":"Ikuko","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":662997,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Cherkiss, Michael S. 0000-0002-7802-6791 mcherkiss@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7802-6791","contributorId":4571,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cherkiss","given":"Michael","email":"mcherkiss@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":566,"text":"Southeast Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":662998,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Pollock, Clayton","contributorId":168497,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Pollock","given":"Clayton","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":662999,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Lundgren, Ian","contributorId":179151,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lundgren","given":"Ian","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":663000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Hillis-Starr, Zandy","contributorId":179152,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hillis-Starr","given":"Zandy","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":663001,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8}]}}

A lack of detailed information on the nonbreeding distributions, migration routes, or timing of migration among populations hampers our ability to identify population processes outside the breeding period. We used geolocators to track annual movements of 21 Golden-winged Warblers from 3 North American breeding locations experiencing varying population trends to investigate the potential for nonbreeding site factors to influence breeding populations. We used the template-fit method to estimate locations of individual warblers throughout the year. Geolocator-marked warblers exhibited significant isolation among populations during migration and the nonbreeding period. During the nonbreeding period, Golden-winged Warblers from Minnesota, USA (n = 12) occurred in Central America from southern Mexico to central Nicaragua; warblers from Tennessee, USA (n = 7) occurred along the border of northern Colombia and Venezuela; and warblers from Pennsylvania, USA (n = 2) occurred in north-central Venezuela. Warblers travelled at slower rates over more days in fall migration than spring migration. Fall migration routes at the Gulf of Mexico were population-specific, whereas spring routes were more varied and overlapped among populations. Golden-winged Warblers from Pennsylvania migrated 4,000 and 5,000 km yr−1 farther than Tennessee and Minnesota warblers, respectively, and spent almost twice as long migrating in the fall compared to Minnesota warblers. Our results reveal nearly complete temporal and geographic isolation among 3 populations of Golden-winged Warblers throughout the annual cycle, resulting in opportunities for population- and site-specific factors to differentially influence populations outside the breeding period. Our findings highlight the need for monitoring multiple populations of migratory species to understand and better inform conservation strategies.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Society","doi":"10.1650/CONDOR-16-143.1","usgsCitation":"Kramer, G.R., Streby, H.M., Peterson, S.M., Lehman, J.A., Buehler, D.A., Wood, P.B., McNeil, D.J., Larkin, J.L., and Andersen, D., 2017, Nonbreeding isolation and population-specific migration patterns among three populations of Golden-winged Warblers: Condor, v. 119, no. 1, p. 108-121, https://doi.org/10.1650/CONDOR-16-143.1.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"108","endPage":"121","ipdsId":"IP-077788","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470086,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1650/condor-16-143.1","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":348209,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"119","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a003150e4b0531197b5a74c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kramer, Gunnar R.","contributorId":94184,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kramer","given":"Gunnar","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":34539,"text":"Minnesota Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":720404,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Streby, Henry M.","contributorId":11024,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Streby","given":"Henry","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":12455,"text":"University of Toledo","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":720405,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Peterson, Sean M.","contributorId":9354,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Peterson","given":"Sean","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":34539,"text":"Minnesota Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit","active":true,"usgs":false},{"id":13013,"text":"Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, University of California, Berkeley","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":720406,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Lehman, Justin A.","contributorId":166944,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lehman","given":"Justin","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":12716,"text":"University of Tennessee","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":720407,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Buehler, David A.","contributorId":176238,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Buehler","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":12716,"text":"University of Tennessee","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":720408,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Wood, Petra B. 0000-0002-8575-1705 pbwood@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8575-1705","contributorId":199090,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wood","given":"Petra","email":"pbwood@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":720409,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"McNeil, Darin J. This species also has exhibited among the most dynamic breeding distributions, with populations expanding and then contracting over the past 150 years in response to regional habitat changes, interactions with closely related Blue-winged Warblers (V. cyanoptera), and possibly climate change. Since 1966, the rangewide population has declined by >70% (-2.3% per year; latest North American Breeding Bird Survey data), with much steeper declines in the Appalachian Mountains bird conservation region (-8.3% per year, 98% overall decline). Despite apparently stable or increasing populations in the northwestern part of the range (Minnesota, Manitoba), population estimates for Golden-winged Warbler have continued to decline by 18% from the decade of the 1990s to the 2000s. Population modeling predicts a further decline to roughly 37,000 individuals by 2100, with the species likely to persist only in Manitoba, Minnesota, and possibly Ontario. To delineate the present-day distribution and to identify population concentrations that could serve as conservation focus areas, we compiled rangewide survey data collected in 2000-2006 in 21 states and 3 Canadian provinces, as part of the Golden-winged Warbler Atlas Project (GOWAP), supplemented by state and provincial Breeding Bird Atlas data and more recent observations in eBird. Based on >8,000 GOWAP surveys for Golden-winged and Blue-winged warblers and their hybrids, we mapped occurrence of phenotypically pure and mixed populations in a roughly 0.5-degree grid across the species’ ranges. Hybrids and mixed Golden-winged-Blue-winged populations occurred in a relatively narrow zone across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, southern Ontario, and northern New York. Phenotypically pure Golden-winged Warbler populations occurred north of this hybrid zone, but the future of northern populations in the Great Lakes states and Canada (where >80% of the species occurs at present) is highly uncertain because of continued northward expansion of Blue-winged Warblers and hybridization. A second, now-disjunct band of Golden-winged Warbler populations exists in the Appalachian Mountains from southeastern New York to northern Georgia, surrounded at lower elevations by Blue-winged Warblers. Important concentrations of Golden-winged Warblers persist in the Allegheny Mountains region of West Virginia, the Cumberland Mountains in Tennessee, Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Allegheny Plateau and Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, and in the Hudson Highlands of southern New York. These high-elevation Appalachian populations have escaped contact with Blue-winged Warblers until very recently and represent important refugia for conservation and management; other Appalachian populations are rapidly declining. In addition, based on historical records and standardized surveys across the wintering grounds, we identified three regions of concentration: highlands and Caribbean slopes from Guatemala and Belize to northwestern Nicaragua; middle elevations (both slopes) in Costa Rica and western Panama; and in an arc of the northern Andes from central Colombia to northern Venezuela. In this report, we provide data on the tolerance of A. ocellatus to abrupt and gradual changes in salinity, its high and low temperature tolerance, and information on how salinity, temperature, and fish size interact to affect survival. Fish were able to survive abrupt transfer to salinities as high as 16 ppt with no mortality. When salinity change was gradual (2 ppt/day), fish in the warm-temperature experiment (28°C) survived longer than fish in the cool-temperature experiment (18°C). Larger fish survived longer than smaller ones at the higher salinities when the temperature was warm, but when the temperature was cool fish size had little effect on survival. In the temperature-tolerance experiments, fish survived from 9 to 41°C for short periods of time. Overall, the species showed a wide range of temperature and salinity tolerance. Thus, in spite of the tropical freshwater origin of this species, physiological stress is not likely to hinder its dispersal to brackish waters, especially when temperatures are warm.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","publisherLocation":"New York, New York","doi":"10.1007/s10750-016-2740-8","usgsCitation":"Gutierrel, S.M., Schofield, P.J., and Prodocimo, V., Using a 2-state open robust design model, we analyzed mark-recapture data from green turtles Chelonia mydas sighted between 1979 and 2009 on Aves Island, Venezuela, a rookery heavily impacted by human activities before it was declared a wildlife refuge in 1972. Based on the encounter histories of 7689 nesting females, we estimated the abundance, annual survival, and remigration intervals for this population. Female survival varied from 0.14-0.91, with a mean of 0.79, which is low compared to survival of other populations from the Caribbean (mean = 0.84) and Australia (mean = 0.95), even though we partially corrected for tag loss, which is known to negatively bias survival estimates. This supports prior suggestions that Caribbean populations in general, and the Aves Island population in particular, may be more strongly impacted than populations elsewhere. It is likely that nesters from this rookery are extracted while foraging in remote feeding grounds where hunting still occurs. Despite its relatively low survival, the nesting population at Aves Island increased during the past 30 years from approx. 500 to >1000 nesting females in 2009. Thus, this population, like others in the Caribbean and the Atlantic, seems to be slowly recovering following protective management. Although these findings support the importance of long-term conservation programs aimed at protecting nesting grounds, they also highlight the need to extend management actions to foraging grounds where human activities may still impact green turtle populations.
","language":"English","publisher":"Inter-Research Science Publisher","doi":"10.3354/esr00695","usgsCitation":"Garcia-Cruz, M.A., Lampo, M., Penaloza, C.L., Kendall, W., Sole, G., and Rodriguez-Clark, K.M., 2015, Population trends and survival of nesting green sea turtles Chelonia mydas on Aves Island, Venezuela: Endangered Species Research, v. 29, no. 2, p. 103-116, https://doi.org/10.3354/esr00695.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"103","endPage":"116","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-061027","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471500,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.3354/esr00695","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":318059,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Venezuela","otherGeospatial":"Aves Island","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -63.38424114450454,\n              15.41986000335801\n            ],\n            [\n              -63.38424114450454,\n              15.383063099888886\n            ],\n            [\n              -63.33335107339563,\n              15.383063099888886\n            ],\n            [\n              -63.33335107339563,\n              15.41986000335801\n            ],\n            [\n              -63.38424114450454,\n              15.41986000335801\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"29","issue":"2","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56c44831e4b0946c6521170b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Garcia-Cruz, Marco A.","contributorId":166909,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Garcia-Cruz","given":"Marco","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":620325,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lampo, Margarita","contributorId":166910,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lampo","given":"Margarita","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":620326,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Penaloza, Claudia L.","contributorId":166911,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Penaloza","given":"Claudia","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":620327,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Kendall, William L. 0000-0003-0084-9891 wkendall@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0084-9891","contributorId":166709,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kendall","given":"William L.","email":"wkendall@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":619805,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Sole, Genaro","contributorId":166912,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sole","given":"Genaro","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":620328,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Rodriguez-Clark, Kathryn M.","contributorId":166913,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Rodriguez-Clark","given":"Kathryn","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":620329,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

To date, use areas at sea have been determined entirely from vessel-based surveys and opportunistic sightings and, as such, spatial and temporal gaps in our understanding of the species’ marine range are likely. To enhance our understanding of marine use areas, we deployed satellite tags on 3 black-capped petrels breeding on Hispaniola, representing the first tracking study for this species and one of the first published tracking studies for any breeding seabird in the Caribbean. During chick rearing, petrels primarily used marine habitats in the southern Caribbean Sea (ca. 18.0° to 11.5°N, 70.0° to 75.5°W) between the breeding site and the coasts of Venezuela and Colombia. Maximum distance from the breeding sites ranged from ca. 500 to 1500 km during the chick-rearing period. During the post-breeding period, each bird dispersed north and used waters west of the Gulf Stream offshore of the mid- and southern Atlantic coasts of the USA as well as Gulf Stream waters and deeper pelagic waters east of the Gulf Stream. Maximum distance from the breeding sites ranged from ca. 2000 to 2200 km among birds during the nonbreeding period. Petrels used waters located within 14 different exclusive economic zones, suggesting that international collaboration will benefit the development of management strategies for this species.
","language":"English","publisher":"Inter-Res","doi":"10.3354/esr00697","usgsCitation":"Jodice, P.G., Ronconi, R.A., Rupp, E., Wallace, G.E., and Satgé, Y., 2015, First satellite tracks of the Endangered black-capped petrel: Endangered Species Research, v. 29, no. 1, p. 23-33, https://doi.org/10.3354/esr00697.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"23","endPage":"33","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-064990","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471504,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.3354/esr00697","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":317906,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Caribbean Sea","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.5087890625,\n              37.77071473849609\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.56396484375,\n              35.28150065789119\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.947265625,\n              32.13840869677251\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.49658203125,\n              30.524413269923986\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.31005859375,\n              25.284437746983055\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.771484375,\n              17.035777250427195\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.4990234375,\n              12.404388944669792\n            ],\n            [\n              -63.94042968749999,\n              10.768555807732437\n            ],\n            [\n              -60.8203125,\n              38.75408327579141\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.5087890625,\n              37.77071473849609\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"29","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":8,"text":"Raleigh PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56bc6d41e4b08d617f66627b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jodice, Patrick G.R. 0000-0001-8716-120X pjodice@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8716-120X","contributorId":1119,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jodice","given":"Patrick","email":"pjodice@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.R.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":619703,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ronconi, Robert A.","contributorId":166692,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ronconi","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":619739,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Rupp, Ernst","contributorId":166693,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Rupp","given":"Ernst","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":619740,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Wallace, George E.","contributorId":166695,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wallace","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":619741,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Satgé, Yvan","contributorId":166696,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Satgé","given":"Yvan","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":619742,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The population of small-eared shrews (Mammalia, Eulipotyphla, Soricidae, Cryptotis) inhabiting the Sierra de Perijá previously was known from only a single skull from an individual collected in Colombia in 1989. This specimen had been referred to alternatively as C. thomasi and C. meridensis, but more precise definition of the known Colombian and Venezuelan species of Cryptotis has since excluded the Sierra de Perijá population from any named species. The recent collection of a specimen from the Venezuelan slope of Sierra de Perijá, prompted us to re-evaluate the taxonomic status of this population and determine its relationship with other Andean shrews. Our examination of the available specimens revealed that they possess a unique suite of morphological and morphometrical characters, and we describe the Sierra de Perijá population as a new species in the South American C. thomasi species group. Recognition of this new species adds to our knowledge of this genus in South America and to the biodiversity of the Sierra de Perijá.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","doi":"10.1093/jmammal/gyv085","usgsCitation":"Quiroga-Carmona, M., and Woodman, N., 2015, A new species of Cryptotis (Mammalia, Eulipotyphla, Soricidae) from the Sierra de Perijá, Venezuelan-Colombian Andes: Journal of Mammalogy, v. 96, no. 4, p. 800-809, https://doi.org/10.1093/jmammal/gyv085.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"800","endPage":"809","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-062343","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":472059,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/jmammal/gyv085","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":310332,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Columbia, Venezuela","otherGeospatial":"Sierra de Perija","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -73.29254150390625,\n 9.700935243407013\n ],\n [\n -73.29254150390625,\n 10.38246684741556\n ],\n [\n -72.59490966796875,\n 10.38246684741556\n ],\n [\n -72.59490966796875,\n 9.700935243407013\n ],\n [\n -73.29254150390625,\n 9.700935243407013\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"96","issue":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":10,"text":"Baltimore PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-06-03","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"562a08aae4b011227bf1fd28","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Quiroga-Carmona, Marcial","contributorId":149354,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Quiroga-Carmona","given":"Marcial","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":17716,"text":"Laboratorio de Paleontología, Centro de Ecología, Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas. Tropical songbirds typically lay small clutches, thus the ability to evolve even smaller clutch sizes at higher elevations is unclear and untested. We conducted a comparative phylogenetic analysis using data gathered from the literature to test whether clutch size varied with elevation among forest passerines from three tropical biogeographic regions—the Venezuelan Andes and adjacent lowlands, Malaysian Borneo, and New Guinea. We found a significant negative effect of elevation on variation in clutch size among species. We found the same pattern using field data sampled across elevational gradients in Venezuela and Malaysian Borneo. Field data were not available for New Guinea. Both sets of results demonstrate that tropical montane species across disparate biogeographic realms lay smaller clutches than closely related low-elevation species. The environmental sources of selection underlying this pattern remain uncertain and merit further investigation.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Gauge observations, however, are often sparse in regions with complicated terrain, clustered in valleys, and of poor quality. Consequently, the spatial extent of wet events is poorly represented. Satellite-derived precipitation data are an attractive alternative, though they tend to underestimate the magnitude of wet events due to their dependency on retrieval algorithms and the indirect relationship between satellite infrared observations and precipitation intensities. Here we offer a Bayesian kriging approach for blending precipitation gauge data and the Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation satellite-derived precipitation estimates for Central America, Colombia, and Venezuela. First, the gauge observations are modeled as a linear function of satellite-derived estimates and any number of other variables—for this research we include elevation. Prior distributions are defined for all model parameters and the posterior distributions are obtained simultaneously via Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling. The posterior distributions of these parameters are required for spatial estimation, and thus are obtained prior to implementing the spatial kriging model. This functional framework is applied to model parameters obtained by sampling from the posterior distributions, and the residuals of the linear model are subject to a spatial kriging model. Consequently, the posterior distributions and uncertainties of the blended precipitation estimates are obtained. We demonstrate this method by applying it to pentadal and monthly total precipitation fields during 2009. The model's performance and its inherent ability to capture wet events are investigated. We show that this blending method significantly improves upon the satellite-derived estimates and is also competitive in its ability to represent wet events. This procedure also provides a means to estimate a full conditional distribution of the “true” observed precipitation value at each grid cell.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.1002/2014WR015963","usgsCitation":"Verdin, A.P., Rajagopalan, B.,
