The samples from each state are, Pennsylvania 71, Ohio 40, West Virginia 252, Virginia 72, Kentucky 27, Tennessee 27, Alabama 20, and Indiana 108.</p><p>The U.S. Geological Survey has quantitatively determined the amounts of 35 major, minor and trace elements in each sample. It has also searched for 35 other trace elements using semi-quantitative spectrographic methods. In addition, the Coal Analysis Section of the Department of Energy has provided proximate and ultimate analyses, Btu, forms of sulfur, free swelling index, and ash fusion temperatures on 491 samples.</p><p>Comparison of the geometric means of these samples with 331 bituminous coal samples of the Appalachian region reported by Swanson and others (1976) are as follows. As shown by the means for ultimate and proximate analyses small differences exist between the two sets of data, only the moisture content and oxygen are significantly different. The forms of sulfur and heat of combustion are also similar. The means for the major and minor oxides in ash are similar for SiO<sub>2</sub>, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, CaO, MgO, K<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> and TiO<sub>2</sub>. Na<sub>2</sub>O is significantly lower and Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> and MnO higher in the analyses of the 617 samples of this report. Most means for the trace elements in the coals studied for this report are lower. The primary purpose of the well was to obtain in situ stress measurements from zones within subsurface Paleozoic rocks using the hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracture) technique. Such measurements determine the character and magnitude of the active tectonic stress field in an area and are helpful in evaluating the potential for faulting (Zoback and others, 1978). The new data about the active tectonic stress field can then be used to evaluate the various theories that have been proposed to explain the genesis and characteristics of the upper Mississippi embayment earthquakes.</p><p>A second goal of the test well was to extensively study the post-Paleozoic stratigraphy in the area. Detailed stratigraphic information would provide a better understanding of the structural framework of the upper Mississippi embayment. Accurate knowledge of the stratigraphy would also help to identify the reflecting horizons that were recorded in a series of seismic reflection profiles that the U.S. Geological Survey had previously run throughout the upper Mississippi embayment. To strengthen the correlation between reflecting horizons and stratigraphic units, one of the reflection profiles was run within 10 m of the well.</p><p>The stratigraphy and structure of the New Madrid, Mo., area are, at present, poorly understood. Only a handful of deep wells and test holes, some with only generalized driller's logs and few with accompanying geophysical logs, are available to aid in interpreting the subsurface geology of the upper Mississippi embayment. Extensive paleontologic and palynologic studies are planned to assist in identifying formal stratigraphic units and to help define the depositional history of the sediments. For the Tertiary and Cretaceous sequences, these investigations will also yield valuable biostratigraphic data by defining the biofacies changes that occur between the well-studied marine facies in the southern part and the time-equivalent, continental and nearshore-deltaic facies in the northern part of the embayment.</p><p>This report was prepared to release preliminary data obtained during the drilling phase of the test well. It includes a short text describing mechanical operations and history of the drilling, some initial stratigraphic interpretations of the test-well data, and a brief discussion of studies generated by the project which are now in progress. Attached appendices contain a field driller's log and geophysical logs. In order to maintain consistency with standard drilling usage, measurements related to drilling operations are cited in English units.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Despite the aridity of the valley itself, however , very heavy rainfall sometimes occurs in the nearby mountains. Such violent rainstorms are likely to be of relatively short duration and to occur over rather small areas; nevertheless, they sometimes produce large floodflows that in turn cause severe erosion and flows of debris. The debris-laden flows may be hazardous to life and property. Given sufficient knowledge of the hydrologic and hydraulic environment, the degree of hazard can be estimated. Potential hazards are defined for areas in the vicinity of the Furnace Creek fan and the Park Service residential area. A digital model calibrated to conditions in Wildcat Creek was used to predict alternatives for future waste loadings that would be compatible with Indiana stream water-quality standards defined for two critical hydrologic conditions, summer and winter low flows.</p><p>The model indicates that benthic-oxygen demand is the most significant factor affecting the dissolved-oxygen concentrations in Wildcat Creek during summer low flows. The Indiana stream dissolved-oxygen standard should be met if the Kokomo wastewater-treatment facility meets its current National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit restrictions (average monthly 5-day biochemical-oxygen demand of 5 milligrams per liter and maximum weekly 5-day biochemical-oxygen demand of 7.5 milligrams per liter) and benthic-oxygen demand becomes negligible.</p><p>Ammonia-nitrogen toxicity may also be a water-quality limitation in Wildcat Creek. The Indiana State Board of Health's projected ammonia-nitrogen concentration for the Frankfort wastewater-treatment facility will violate the in-stream total ammonia-nitrogen standards of 2.5 milligrams per liter and 4.0 milligrams per liter during summer and winter low flows, respectively.</p><p>The model indicates that nitrification and algal respiration were significant factors affecting the dissolved-oxygen dynamics of South Fork Wildcat Creek during two water-quality surveys.</p><p>Stream water quality during the two water-quality surveys was degraded by the discharge of wastewater receiving only primary treatment. Benthic deposits resulting from this wastewater discharge seem to exert a considerable oxygen demand. The discharge of partially treated wastewater should be eliminated when a new wastewater-treatment facility becomes operational in mid-1979. References to most reports of the Geological Survey, U.S. Bureau of Mines, and State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys released before June 1, 1979, are included. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. Also not included are data on geochemical anomalies and on many prospects and claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, some of those in MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (OF 77-169A)). The Silent Canyon volcanic center is a buried cauldron complex of Miocene age (13-15 m.y.). Black Mountain volcanic center is an elliptical-shaped cauldron complex of late Miocene age. \r\n\r\nThe lavas and tuffs of the two centers comprise a subalkaline-peralkaline association. Rock types range from quartz normative subalkaline trachyte and rhyolite to peralkaline comendite. The Gold Flat Member of the Thirsty Canyon Tuff (Black Mountain) is a pantellerite. \r\n\r\nThe major-element geochemistry of the Black Mountain-Silent Canyon volcanic centers differs in the total range and distribution of Si02, contents, the degree of peralkalinity (molecular Na2O+K2O>Al2O3) and in the values of total iron and alumina through the range of rock types. These differences indicate that the suites were unrelated and evolved from differing magma bodies. \r\n\r\nThe Black Mountain volcanic cycle represents a renewed phase of volcanism following cessation of the Timber Mountain-Silent Canyon volcanic cycles. Consequently, there is a small but numerically incalculable probability of recurrence of Black Mountain-type volcanism within the Nevada Test Site region. Other deposits mapped, but virtually nonwater yielding, are the older (dissected) alluvial-fan, pediment, and terrace deposits. Terraces are capped by gravel and form levels at 30-40, 45-100, 120-150, 200-260, and 280-330 feet above the Nowood River. The thickness of the alluvial aquifer indicated from the sparse well-log data and 42 surface resistivity measurements is between 25 and 50 feet along the Nowood River and more than 60 feet along Tensleep and Paint Rock Creeks. The resistivity measurements indicate a buried bedrock ridge below the boulder-fan gravel between Paint Rock and Medicine Lodge Creeks and a buried channel filled by alluvium along Tensleep Creek. Well yields from the alluvial aquifer are estimated to be low. The most favorable areas for ground-water development are from the flood-plain alluvium along Tensleep Creek and from the boulder-fan gravel and adjoining flood-plain alluvium along Paint Rock and Medicine Creeks. Along the Nowood River the flood-plain alluvium, although its yields are small, has the best potential for ground-water development. This caldera formed 22 m.y. ago in response to ash-flow eruptions of the Delano Peak Tuff Member of the Bullion Canyon Volcanics. Little, if any, mineralization took place during or shortly after caldera subsidence, but subsequent geologic events produced several environments that seem favorable for the occurrence of uranium deposits. All references to most reports of the Geological Survey, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies released before April 1, 1979, are summarized. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies are not included. Also not included are data on many claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (OF 77-169A), p. 83).
