The most heavily stressed of these systems is the Pearl Harbor on Oahu. The Pearl Harbor basal aquifer supplies as much as 277 million gallons per day. Since early in this century, spring discharge has been declining while pumpage has been increasing. Total ground-water discharge has remained steady despite short-term fluctuations. Some wells show general increases in chloride concentration while others remain steady. Chloride concentrations throughout the area show no apparent increase since 1970. Basal water head maps of the Pearl Harbor area clearly reflect the natural discharge points, which are the springs located along the shore near the center of Pearl Harbor. Basal-water hydrographs show a general decline of about 0.09 foot per year. This implies depletion of storage at a rate of about 25 million gallons per day. Traveltimes are determined from a horizontally layered crustal structure or from a linear increase of velocity with depth. Arrival times for the first arrival of P-waves and S-waves, and S-minus P interval times can be used in the solutions. Arrival times for crustal refractions such as Pn, even at distances where they do not arrive first, can also be used. Each arrival can be weighted according to the reading clarity, epicentral distance to the station, and the deviation of its residual from the mean. The hypocenter is found using Geiger's method to minimize the root mean square (RMS) of the traveltime residuals. The magnitude of each event is calculated from the maximum amplitude and/or the signal duration. The first motions can be plotted on the printer using an equal area lower focal hemisphere projection. A map showing the location of each epicenter can be plotted directly on the printer or punched card output can be used as input to another program for plotting on a graphic plotter. The ANLW site at INEL lies in a shallow topographic depression bounded on the east and south by volcanic rift zones that are the locus of past shield-type basalt volcanism and by rhyolite domes erupted along the ring fracture of an inferred rhyolite caldera. The K-At age data indicate that the ANLW site has been flooded by basalt lava flows at irregular intervals from perhaps a few thousand years to as much as 300,000-400,000 years, with an average recurrence interval between flows of approximately 80,000-100,000 years. The average water-level decline was less than 0.10 foot between August 1974 and August 1977 in 10 observation wells. Water-level contours show a depression centered on the two pumping wells, but this depression existed before the National Park Service started pumping its well.</p><p>The chemical quality of the ground water is poor. Dissolved-solids concentrations in water samples ranged from 2,730 to 6,490 milligrams per liter. Analyses of water samples from two wells showed large changes in some constituents from 1976 to 1977. Water-quality monitoring will continue at these sites to verify the changes.</p><p>Streamflow in Salt Creek has been monitored since February 1974. Base flow is seasonal, being 0.10 to 0.20 cubic foot per second during the summer and as much as three times that amount during the winter. Two chemical analyses of water from Salt Creek, representing summer and winter flow conditions, show large differences for many constituents.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological About 15 percent of the county is covered by several hundred lakes whose surface areas range in size from a few to several thousand acres. Much of the natural drainage has been altered by canalization or regulated by control structures. Under natural conditions streamflow is seasonal, usually high in September or October and low in May or June, in phase with the rainy season. Control structures are used to maintain lake levels within a relatively small range in stage, producing greater seasonal variations in river flow than before regulation. Dissolved-solids concentration of much of the surface water is less than 240 mg/l, in some, much less. The water typically is of calcium bicarbonate type. Color is fairly high, in water draining from swamps, where the pickup of humic acids is significant. Uranium occurs there as roll-type deposits in Tertiary sandstones. Alteration of the host sandstones related to the formation of the uranium deposits, is marked at the surface by a pronounced red coloration, which has long been used in the area as a prospecting guide. This report presents a characterization of alteration in the Crooks Gap area based upon (1) field observations of the extent and appearance of the alteration at the surface, (2) determination of the mineralogy and spectral reflectance characteristics of representative samples of altered and unaltered material in the laboratory, and (3) analysis of Landsat data of selected areas of altered and unaltered rocks. \r\n\r\nLaboratory spectrophot6metric data show that fresh, red-colored, altered rock has a strong absorption at 0.35 and 0.5 micrometers and a marked rise in reflectivity from 0.7 to 1.6 micrometers; weathered, red-colored, altered rock and Triassic red beds both show strong spectral absorption near 0.35 micrometers but have a relatively flat response from 0.7 to 1.6 micrometers. Landsat radiance values, simulated from the laboratory data, show that both altered rock and Triassic red beds are indicated by a high red-to-green ratio. This is in good agreement with actual satellite data over these rock types.
