It includes the named features of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas south of 74°N latitude and the Alaskan coast from the Bering Strait to Demarcation Point. The gazetteer of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas is the third of three gazetteers that cover the offshore and coastal features of Alaska. For this purpose Alaska was divided into three major regions - the Gulf of Alaska (Gerin and Molnia, 1978), the Bering Sea and Aleutian Arc (Gerin, 1979), and the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. (Fig.1)
The purpose of the gazetteer is to serve as a collection of named features of the region, both current and new names. This gazetteer provides a single source of names for coastal and offshore features rather than separate land and sea references. With the increased activity of offshore exploration there is an increased use of current and new names in reports and maps of the Arctic coast.
The proposed Big Frog Wilderness is comprised of approximately 1820 hectares (18.2 km2) of mountainous terrain in the Cherokee and Chattahoochee National Forests south of the Ocoee River in Polk County, Tennessee, and Fannin County, Georgia. Rocks of the study area are greenschist-facies metasandstone, meta-arkose, metagraywacke, and dark slate of the Ocoee Supergroup of late Precambrian age. A major thrust fault, correlated with the Greenbrier Fault, separates fine-grained slaty rocks of the Snowbird Group on the northwest side, from coarse clastic sediments and interbedded slates of the Great Smoky Group on the southeast. North- and northeast-trending folds are common in the map area. Minor deposits of Quaternary sand and gravel occur locally in the lower parts of large streams.
Semiquantitative spectrographic, atomic absorption, and selected fire assay analyses were done on more than 200 samples of rock, soil, and stream sediment. No significant metal anomalies were found for 31 major, minor, and trace elements. In many places, metasiltstone and metasandstone contain trace amounts of chalcopyrite and sphalerite as microscopic intergrowths with the chief sulfide minerals, pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfides make up as much as 5 to 10 percent of some rocks and provide concentrations of Cu, Zn, and As slightly higher than background in samples of rock and soil. Rocks containing these disseminated base-metal sulfides are of insufficient grade to have current economic potential, however.
No metallic mineral resources are known within the proposed Big Frog Wilderness. Nonmetallic resources, including slate and phyllite, stone, and sand and gravel are present locally, but are not presently a value because similar resources exist closer to markets outside the study area. These deposits therefore would have only marginal use in the region.

roll-type uranium deposit","docAbstract":"Core samples from a roll type uranium deposit in Live Oak County, south Texas have been studied and results are reported for Se, Mo, FeS2 and organic-carbon distribution, sulfide mineral petrology, and sulfur isotopic composition of iron-disulfide phases. In addition, sulfur isotopic compositions of dissolved sulfate and sulfide from the modern ground water within the ore bearing sand have been studied. The suite of elements in the ore sand and their geometric relationships throughout the deposit are those expected for typical roll-type deposits with well-developed oxidation-reduction interfaces. However, iron-disulfide minerals are abundant in the altered tongue, demonstrating that this interval has been sulfidized after mineralization (resulfidized or rereduced). Iron disulfide minerals in the rereduced interval differ mineralogically and isotopically from those throughout the remainder of the deposit. The resulfidized sand contains dominantly pyrite that is enriched in 34S, whereas the sand beyond the altered tongue contains abundant marcasite that is enriched in the light isotope, 32S. Textural relationships between pyrite and marcasite help to establish relative timing of iron disulfide formation. In reduced rock outside the altered tongue, three distinct generations of iron disulfide are present. The oldest of these generations consists largely of pyrite with lesser amounts of marcasite. A major episode of marcasite formation contemporaneous with ore genesis postdates the oldest pyrite generation but predates a younger pyrite generation. Resulfidization probably led to the final pyrite stage recognized beyond the altered tongue. Stable isotope data establish that the source of sulfur for the resulfidization was fault-leaked H2S probably derived from the Edwards Limestone of Cretaceous age which underlies the deposit. \r\n\r\nThe deposit formed in at least two stages: (1) a pre-ore process of host rock sulfidization which produced disseminated pyrite as the dominant iron disulfide phase; and (2) an ore-stage process which led to the development of the uranium roll with emplacement of the characteristic suite of minor and accessory elements and which produced abundant isotopically light marcasite. The host rock was modified by a post-ore stage of resulfidization which precipitated isotopically heavy pyrite. Sulfur isotopic compositions of sulfide and sulfate present in modern ground water within the host sand differ greatly from sulfur isotopic composition of iron disulfides formed during the resulfidization episode. Results of these analyses suggest two separate genetic oil types. The first type, the Simpson-Umiat oil type, occurs in reservoir rocks of Cretaceous and Quaternary age and includes oils from seeps in the Skull Cliff, Cape Simpson, Manning Point, and Ungoon Point areas; the Wolf Creek test well 3, and the Umiat oil field. These are higher gravity, low-sulfur oils with no, or slight, odd-numbered n-alkane predominance and pristane to phytane ratios greater than 1.5. The second type, the Barrow-Prudhoe oil type, occurs in reservoir rocks of Carboniferous to Cretaceous age and includes oils from South Barrow gas field, Prudhoe Bay oil field, and the Fish Creek test well 1. Physical properties of Barrow-Prudhoe oils are variable, but in general the oils are medium-gravity, high-sulfur oils with a slight even-numbered n-alkane predominance and pristane to phytane ratios of less than 1.5. The two types are believed to originate from different source rocks; the Barrow-Prudhoe type may have originated from a carbonate or other iron-deficient source rock, and the Simpson-Umiat type from a siliciclastic source rock. Occurrences of the two oil types, when outlined on a map, indicate at least two exploration fairways. The fairway for the Barrow-Prudhoe type is along the Barrow arch, and the fairway for the Simpson-Umiat type is the area of the best reservoir development for the Nanushuk Group.

Although dissolved oxygen is a necessary prerequisite for the formation of roll-type deposits, it is proposed that a lack of dissolved oxygen is a prerequisite for the Uravan deposits. \r\n\r\nSolutions that formed both types of deposits probably had a supergene origin and originated as meteoric water in approximate equilibrium with atmospheric oxygen. Roll-type deposits were formed where the Eh dropped abruptly following consumption of the oxygen by iron sulfide minerals and creation of kinetically active sulfur species that could reduce uranium. The solutions that formed the Uravan deposits, on the other hand, probably first equilibrated with sulfide-free ferrous-ferric detrital minerals and fossil organic matter in the host rock. That is, the uraniferous solutions lost their oxygen without lowering their Eh enough to precipitate uranium. Without oxygen, they then. became incapable of oxidizing iron sulfide minerals. mineralization that began about 42 m.y. ago. Volcanic activity and mineralization in the area can be divided into three stages according to the time-related occurrence of rock types, trace element associations, and chemical nature of mineralization. Volcanic activity switched abruptly from rhyodacite-quartz latite (42-39 m.y. ago) to rhyolite (38-32 m.y. ago) to alkali rhyolite stages (21 and 6-7 m.y. ago); these stages correspond to periods of chalcophile and siderophile metal mineralization, no mineralization, and lithophile metal mineralization, respectively. Angular unconformities record episodes of cauldron collapse and block faulting between the stages of volcanic activity and mineralization. The youngest angular unconformity formed between 21 and 7 m.y. ago during basin-and-range faulting.
Early rhyodacite-quartz latite volcanism from composite volcanoes and fissures produced flows, breccias, and ash-flow tuff of the Drum Mountains Rhyodacite and Mt. Laird Tuff. Eruption of the Mt. Laird Tuff about 39 m.y. ago from an area north of Joy townsite was accompanied by collapse of the Thomas caldera. Part of the roof of the magma chamber did not collapse, or the magma was resurgent, as is indicated by porphyry dikes and plugs in the Drum Mountains. Chalcophile and siderophile metal mineralization, including copper, gold, and manganese, accompanied early volcanism.
The middle stage of volcanic activity was characterized by explosive eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs and collapse of the Dugway Valley cauldron. Eruption of the Joy Tuff 38 m.y. ago was accompanied by subsidence of this cauldron and followed by collapse and sliding of Paleozoic rocks from the west wall of the cauldron. Landslides in The Dell were covered by the Dell Tuff, erupted 32 m.y. ago from an unknown source to the east. An ash-flow of the Needles Range Formation was erupted 30-31 m.y. ago, probably from a distant source outside the volcanic field. The rhyolitic stage of volcanism was barren of mineralization.
The last stage of volcanism was contemporaneous with basin-and-range faulting and was characterized by explosive eruption of ash and pumice, forming stratified tuff, and by quiet eruption of alkali rhyolite as viscous flows and domes. The first episode of alkali rhyolite volcanism deposited the beryllium tuff and porphyritic rhyolite members of the Spor Mountain Formation 21 m.y. ago. After a period of block faulting, the stratified tuff and alkali rhyolite of the Topaz Mountain Rhyolite were erupted 6-7 m.y. ago along faults and fault intersections. Erosion of Spor Mountain may have provided abundant dolomite detritus to the beryllium tuff member. The alkali rhyolite of both formations is fluorine-rich, as is evident from abundant topaz, and contains anomalous amounts of lithophile metals. Alkali rhyolite volcanism was accompanied by lithophile metal mineralization which deposited fluorite, beryllium, and uranium.
The structure of the area is dominated by the Thomas caldera, and the younger Dugway Valley cauldron, which is nested within the Thomas caldera; the Thomas caldera is surrounded by a rim of Paleozoic rocks at Spor Mountain and Paleozoic to Precambrian rocks in the Drum Mountains. The Joy fault and Dell fault system mark the ring fracture zone of the Thomas caldera. These structural features began to form about 39 m.y. ago during eruption of the Mt. Laird Tuff and cauldon subsidence. The Dugway Valley cauldron sank along a series of step-like normal faults southeast of Topaz Mountain in response to collapse of the magma chamber of the Joy Tuff. The caldera structure was modified by block faulting between 21 and 7 m.y. ago, the time of widespread extensional faulting in the basin-and-range province. Vents erupted alkali rhyolite 6-7 m.y. ago along basin-and-range faults.
Uranium mineralization was associated with the stage of alkali rhyolite volcanism, extensional basin-and-range faulting, and lithophile metal mineralization; it occurred at least 11 m.y. after the end of the caldera cycle. Uranium, derived from alkali rhyolite magma, was concentrated in trace amounts by magmatic fluids and in potentially economic amounts by hydrothermal fluids and ground water. Hydrothermal fluids deposited uraniferous fluorite as pipes in carbonate rocks of Paleozoic age on Spor Mountain and uranium-bearing disseminated deposits of fluorite and beryllium in the beryllium tuff member of the Spor Mountain Formation. Uranium of hydrothermal origin is dispersed in fluorite and opal. Uranium in fluorite may be tetravalent(?) but that in opal is probably hexavalent; no primary minerals of tetravalent uranium are known to occur. Ground waters have concentrated significant ores of hexavalent uranium minerals in the beryllium tuff member of the Spor Mountain Formation at the Yellow Chief Mine, and are probably also responsible for widespread low concentrations (0.0X percent) of uranium that occur separately from beryllium ore in the beryllium tuff member. More deposits of the Yellow Chief type may occur in down-faulted sections of beryllium tuff beneath the Thomas Range. The ground water ores show no evidence of a reducing environment; instead, precipitation of hexavalent uranium minerals occurred by evaporation, decline in concentration of complexing ions such as carbonate, or some other mechanism. Reducing environments for hydrothermal deposits must be sought around rhyolite vents and in a hypothesized pluton of alkali rhyolite composition beneath Spor Mountain; for ground-water deposits, reducing environments may occur in basin fill such as that of the Dugway Valley cauldron.

Only by means of widespread and systematic underground exploration, accomplished best by core drilling, can the coal resources be determined. All the available data concerning the coal resources is analyzed in this report in order to indicate the feasibility of such an exploration program and where it is most likely to be successful.

the formation of hydrothermal uranium deposits","docAbstract":"As a sulfate-bearing, hydrothermal solution cools to less than about 200°C, kinetic factors prevent sulfate from entering into oxidation-reduction reactions. Consequently, the reducing effect of H2S (and other reduced species) is not balanced with the oxidizing effect of SO4= to the same extent as at higher temperatures. The result is a lower effective Eh of the system. This decrease in the effective Eh due to a slowing of the rate of sulfate reduction with cooling may be the precipitation mechanism for many types of ore deposits.
