Currently, only the wastewater laboratory method for field-filtered samples (SH1433) is an approved, routine (production) method. (The unfiltered wastewater method LC 8033 also is available but requires a proposal for custom analysis.) The method is based on the application of tasseled cap transformation coefficients derived by the EROS Data Center for Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Data, and is used in conjunction with ERDAS Imagine software. Shoreline data obtained using this method are cost effective compared with conventional mapping methods for State, regional, and national coastline applications. Attempts to attribute vector shoreline data with orthometric elevation values derived from tide observation stations, however, proved unsuccessful.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr2003272","usgsCitation":"Scott, J., 2003, Using the Landsat 7 enhanced thematic mapper tasseled cap transformation to extract shoreline: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-272, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2003272.","productDescription":"14 p.","numberOfPages":"14","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":190837,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":8215,"rank":300,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0272/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db602e4d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Scott, J.W. The architectures of many parallel computers and/or their network topologies are based on these investigations. Often, benchmarks resulting from these investigations are compiled with little regard to how a large dataset would move about in these systems. This part of the Beowulf study addresses that concern by looking at specific applications software and system-level modifications. Applications include an implementation of a smoothing filter for time-series data, a parallel implementation of the decision tree algorithm used in the Landcover Characterization project, a parallel Kriging algorithm used to fit point data collected in the field on invasive species to a regular grid, and modifications to the Beowulf project's resampling algorithm to handle larger, higher resolution datasets at a national scale. Systems-level investigations include a feasibility study on Flat Neighborhood Networks and modifications of that concept with Parallel File Systems.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr2003216","usgsCitation":"Steinwand, D.R., Maddox, B., Beckmann, T., and Schmidt, G., 2003, Processing large remote sensing image data sets on Beowulf clusters: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-216, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2003216.","productDescription":"27 p.","numberOfPages":"27","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":294,"text":"Geography","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":338483,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0216/OFR03-216.pdf"},{"id":8213,"rank":300,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0216/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":194383,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db69812a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steinwand, Daniel R. steinwand@usgs.gov","contributorId":3224,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steinwand","given":"Daniel","email":"steinwand@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":288092,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Maddox, Brian","contributorId":54637,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Maddox","given":"Brian","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":288094,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Beckmann, Tim 0000-0002-2557-0638","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2557-0638","contributorId":87995,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beckmann","given":"Tim","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":288095,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Schmidt, Gail 0000-0002-9684-8158","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9684-8158","contributorId":29086,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmidt","given":"Gail","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":288093,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Usually a Beowulf cluster is designed to accomplish a specific set of processing goals, and processing is very efficient when the problem remains inside the constraints of the original design. There are cases, however, when one might wish to compute a problem that is beyond the capacity of the local Beowulf system. In these cases, spreading the problem to multiple clusters or to other machines on the network may provide a cost-effective solution.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr2003208","usgsCitation":"Steinwand, D.R., Maddox, B., Beckmann, T., and Hamer, G., 2003, Extending Beowulf Clusters: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-208, 18 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2003208.","productDescription":"18 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":185675,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9349,"rank":300,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0208/","size":"191","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":338482,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0208/OFR03-208.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f8b67","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steinwand, Daniel R. steinwand@usgs.gov","contributorId":3224,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steinwand","given":"Daniel","email":"steinwand@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":282391,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Maddox, Brian","contributorId":54637,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Maddox","given":"Brian","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":282392,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Beckmann, Tim 0000-0002-2557-0638","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2557-0638","contributorId":87995,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beckmann","given":"Tim","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":282394,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Hamer, George","contributorId":64730,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hamer","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":282393,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The water volume has been reduced from 2.29 million cubic meters in 1931, to 2.03 million cubic meters in 1986, and to 1.89 million cubic meters in 2001. The average annual storage-capacity loss (equal to the sedimentation rate) of Lago El Guineo was 4,727 cubic meters for the period of 1931 to July 1986 (or 0.21 percent per year), increasing to 5,714 cubic meters for the period of 1931 to October 2001 (or 0.25 percent per year). Discrepancies that could lead to substantial errors in volume calculations in a small reservoir like Lago El Guineo, were found when transferring the field-collected data into the geographic information system data base 1:20,000 U.S. Geological Survey Jayuya, Puerto Rico quadrangle. After verification and validation of field data, the Lago El Guineo shoreline was rectified using digital aerial photographs and differential global positioning data.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/wri034093","usgsCitation":"Soler-Lopez, L.R., 2003, Sedimentation Survey of Lago El Guineo, Puerto Rico, October 2001: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 2003-4093, 21 p., 2 pls, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri034093.","productDescription":"21 p., 2 pls","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":177503,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":4920,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/wri034093/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0be4b07f02db5fbd17","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Soler-Lopez, Luis R.","contributorId":27501,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Soler-Lopez","given":"Luis","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":248836,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This report depicts the principal geographic features of the study area; locations of domestic, commercial, and municipal wells from which data were obtained to construct water-table and saturated-thickness maps and five geohydrologic sections; surficial geology; water-table altitude; generalized saturated thickness of the unconfined (water-table) aquifer; generalized thickness of the discontinuous series of confined aquifers; and five geohydrologic sections, all of which are in the northern part of the study area.</p><p>The unconsolidated material in the Chenango River valley consists primarily of three types of deposits: (1) glaciofluvial material consisting of stratified coarse-grained sediment (sand and gravel) that was deposited by meltwater streams flowing above, below, or next to a glacier; (2) glaciolacustrine material consisting of stratified fine-grained sediment (very fine sand, silt, and clay) that was deposited in lakes that formed at the front of a glacier; and (3) recent alluvial material consisting of stratified fine-to-medium grained sediment (fine-to-medium sand and silt) that was deposited on flood plains.</p><p>The water-table map was compiled from water-level data obtained from wells completed in the unconfined aquifer, and from altitudes of stream and river surfaces indicated on 1:24,000-scale topographic maps. Depth to the water table ranged from less than 5 feet below land surface near major streams to more than 75 feet on some of the kame terraces along the valley walls. Saturated thickness of the unconfined aquifer ranged from less than 1 foot near Norwich to more than 200 feet at a kame delta north of Oxford.</p><p>A discontinuous series of confined aquifers is present throughout much of the Chenango River valley north of Oxford. These aquifers consist of kame deposits, eskers, and subglacial outwash sand and gravel deposits that are overlain and confined by lacustrine fine sand, silt, and clay. The saturated thickness of these aquifers is as much as 150 feet near North Norwich.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr03242","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation","usgsCitation":"Hetcher, K.K., Miller, T.S., Garry, J.D., and Reynolds, R.J., 2003, Geohydrology of the Valley-Fill aquifer in the Norwich-Oxford-Brisben area, Chenango County, New York: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-242, 7 Plates: 20.00 x 30.00 iinches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03242.","productDescription":"7 Plates: 20.00 x 30.00 iinches","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":474,"text":"New York Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":323224,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0242/ofr20030242_plate5.pdf","text":"Plate 5 - The \n\ndata were collected from wells screened in shallow sands (less than 350 feet below land surface) \n\nin two major aquifer systems--the Chicot aquifer system in southwestern Louisiana and the Chicot \n\nequivalent aquifer system in southeastern Louisiana and southwestern Mississippi.  The Chicot \n\nequivalent aquifer system is part of the Southern Hills regional aquifer system, and both the \n\nChicot aquifer system and the Southern Hills regional aquifer systems are designated as \n\nsole-source aquifers by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).\n\nThe well depths ranged from 40 to 340 feet below land surface with a median depth of 120 feet.  \n\nThe ground-water-quality data included 5 physiochemical properties, dissolved solids, 9 major \n\ninorganic ions, 24 trace elements, 6 nutrients, dissolved organic carbon, 109 pesticides and \n\ndegradation products, and 85 volatile organic compounds (VOC's); and a subset of the wells were \n\nsampled for radon, chlorofluorocarbons, and stable isotopes.\n\nWater from 35 of the 60 domestic wells sampled had pH values less than the USEPA Seconday \n\nMaximum Contaminant Level (SMCL) range of 6.5 to 8.5 standard units.  Specific conductance \n\nranged from 17 to 1,420 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius.  Dissolved-solids \n\nconcentrations in water from two wells exceeded the SMCL of 500 mg/L (milligrams per liter); the \n\nmaximum concentration was 858 mg/L.  Sodium and calcium were the dominant cations, and \n\nbicarbonate and chloride were the dominant anions.  One chloride concentration (264 mg/L) \n\nexceeded the SMCL of 250 mg/L.  One arsenic concentration (55.3 micrograms per liter) exceeded \n\nthe USEPA Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 10 micrograms per liter.  Iron concentrations in \n\nwater from 22 wells exceeded the SMCL of 300 micrograms per liter; the maximum concentration was \n\n8,670 micrograms per liter.  Manganese concentrations in water from 26 wells exceeded the SMCL \n\nof 50 micrograms per liter; the maximum concentration was 481 micrograms per liter.  Health \n\nAdvisories have been established for six of the trace elements analyzed; no concentrations were \n\ngreater than these nonenforceable standards.  Radon concentrations in water from 9 of 50 wells \n\nsampled were greater thanthe proposed USEPA MCL of 300 picocuries per liter.\n\nConcentrations of ammonia, ammonia plus organic nitrogen, and nitrite plus nitrate in water from \n\nfour wells were greater than 2 mg/L, a level that might indicate anthropogenic influences.  The \n\nmedian dissolved organic carbon concentration was an estimated 0.30 mg/L, which indicated \n\nnaturally occurring dissolved organic carbon conditions in the study area.  Eight pesticides and \n\ntwo degradation products were detected in water from five wells.  Twenty-four VOC's were \n\ndetected in water from 44 wells.  All concentrations of pesticides and VOC's were less than \n\nUSEPA drinking-water standards.\n\nQuality-control samples, which included field-blank samples, replicates, and field and \n\nlaboratory spikes, indicated no bias in ground-water data from collection procedures or \n\nanalyses.  VAriance between the environmental sampls and he corresponding replicate samples was \n\ntypically less than 5 percent, indicating and acceptable degree of laboratory precision and data \n\ncollection reproducibility.\n\nThe Mann-Whitney rank-sum test was used to compare depth to top of screen and selected physicochemical properties and chemical constituents between six groups of wells.  Values for selected physicochemical and chemical constituents were typically greater in wells located in the Chicot aquifer system than in the Chicot equivalent aquifer system. This analysis is an evaluation of the proposed Geography Discipline initiative to provide the Nation with a mechanism to access current and consistent digital geospatial data. This CBA is a supporting document to accompany the Exhibit 300 Capital Asset Plan and Business Case of The National Map Reengineering Program. \r\n\r\nThe framework for estimating the benefits is based on expected improvements in processing information to perform any of the possible applications of spatial data. This analysis does not attempt to determine the benefits and costs of performing geospatial-data applications. Rather, it estimates the change in the differences between those benefits and costs with The National Map and the current situation without it. The estimates of total costs and benefits of The National Map were based on the projected implementation time, development and maintenance costs, rates of data inclusion and integration, expected usage levels over time, and a benefits estimation model. \r\n\r\nThe National Map provides data that are current, integrated, consistent, complete, and more accessible in order to decrease the cost of implementing spatial-data applications and (or) improve the outcome of those applications. The efficiency gains in per-application improvements are greater than the cost to develop and maintain The National Map, meaning that the program would bring a positive net benefit to the Nation. The average improvement in the net benefit of performing a spatial data application was multiplied by a simulated number of application implementations across the country. The numbers of users, existing applications, and rates of application implementation increase over time as The National Map is developed and accessed by spatial data users around the country. \r\n\r\nResults from the 'most likely' estimates of model parameters and data inputs indicate that, over its 30-year projected lifespan, The National Map will bring a net present value (NPV) of benefits of $2.05 billion in 2001 dollars. The average time until the initial investments (the break-even period) are recovered is 14 years. Table ES-1 shows a running total of NPV in each year of the simulation model. In year 14, The National Map first shows a positive NPV, and so the table is highlighted in gray after that point. Figure ES-1 is a graph of the total benefit and total cost curves of a single model run over time. The curves cross in year 14, when the project breaks even. A sensitivity analysis of the input variables illustrated that these results of the NPV of The National Map are quite robust. Figure ES-2 plots the mean NPV results from 60 different scenarios, each consisting of fifty 30-year runs. The error bars represent a two-standard-deviation range around each mean. \r\n\r\nThe analysis that follows contains the details of the cost-benefit analysis, the framework for evaluating economic benefits, a computational simulation tool, and a sensitivity analysis of model variables and values.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/cir1271","usgsCitation":"Halsing, D.L., Theissen, K., and Bernknopf, R., 2003, A cost-benefit analysis of The National Map: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 1271, 49 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir1271.","productDescription":"49 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":181730,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":5902,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/2004/1271/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cde4b07f02db5449fd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Halsing, David L.","contributorId":35809,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Halsing","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":257946,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Theissen, Kevin","contributorId":107779,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Theissen","given":"Kevin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":257948,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bernknopf, Richard","contributorId":51701,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bernknopf","given":"Richard","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":257947,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Eighteen samples were collected from four watersheds representing land uses characterized predominantly as established commercial, industrial, new commercial, and residential.  Results of water-quality analyses enabled calculation of event-mean concentrations and estimated annual contaminant loads and yields of storm runoff from nonpoint sources for 12 water-quality properties and constituents.  The following water-quality data are reported: physical and chemical-related properties, fecal coliform and enterococci bacteria, major inorganic ions, nutrients, trace elements, and organic compounds.  \r\n\r\nThe residential land-use is the largest of the watersheds (550 acres), which resulted in high estimated annual contaminant loads compared to other watersheds for 8 of the 12 water-quality properties and constituents.  This may indicate that the size of the watershed and runoff from residences with their associated contaminants had substantial effects on annual loads within this land use.  The industrial land-use area had the highest estimated annual contaminant loads for metals, followed by the residential landuse area.  However, when comparing yields among the watersheds, the industrial watershed had the highest yield for 9 of the 12 water-quality properties and constituents, whereas the residential watershed had the lowest yield for 7 of the 12.  The industrial watershed yielded more metals per acre per year than any other watershed.  Zinc yields were 2.71 pounds per acre per year from the industrial watershed, compared to 0.35 pounds per acre per year from the residential watershed, which was the lowest of all the watersheds.  Lead concentrations exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Maximum Contaminant Level of 15 micrograms per liter for drinking water standards in 10 of 18 samples.  Low-level concentrations of mercury were detected twice at both the new commercial and residential sites, with all concentrations at or just above reporting limits.  The average dissolved phosphorus concentrations from each land use were two to four times higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criterion of 0.05 milligrams per liter.  Diazinon, which is widely used as a general-purpose insecticide for lawns and gardens, was detected in all 18 samples.  The maximum diazinon concentration detected, 2.7 micrograms per liter, was from the residential site.  Malathion, another insecticide used on lawns, gardens, and plants, was also detected at least once from each site, but all concentrations were below the minimum detection limit of 0.1 micrograms per liter.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri20034212","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge This study is providing nationally consistent and comparable data and analyses of nutrient conditions, including how these conditions vary as a result of natural and human-related factors, and how nutrient conditions affect algae and other biological communities. This information will benefit stakeholders, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and its partners, who are developing nutrient criteria to protect the aquatic health of streams in different geographic regions.</p><p>Nutrient enrichment is one of five national priority topics addressed by NAWQA in its second decade of studies, which began in 2001. During its first round of assessments in 51 major river basins (referred to as “Study Units”), NAWQA scientists collected data on water chemistry, stream hydrology and habitat, and biological communities; currently, NAWQA is revisiting selected basins and focusing on (1) trends, (2) factors that affect water quality and aquatic health, and (3) national priority water issues related to, for example, the development of nutrient criteria, source-water protection strategies, and stream restoration plans.</p><p>The nutrient enrichment study has four major objectives that address nutrient conditions, dissolved oxygen, aquatic communities, and geographic and landscape features in agricultural basins (see inset). In recent years, the demand in some areas has resulted in withdrawals from the Sparta aquifer that substantially exceed replenishment of the aquifer. Considerable drawdown has occurred in the potentiometric surface forming regional cones of depression as water is removed from storage by withdrawals. These cones of depression are centered beneath the Grand Prairie area and the cities of Pine Bluff and El Dorado in Arkansas, and Monroe in Louisiana. The rate of decline for hydraulic heads in the aquifer has been greater than 1 foot per year for more than a decade in much of southern Arkansas and northern Louisiana where hydraulic heads are now below the top of the Sparta Sand. Continued hydraulic-head declines have caused water users and managers alike to question the ability of the aquifer to supply water for the long term. Concern over protecting the Sparta aquifer as a sustainable resource has resulted in a continued, cooperative effort by the Arkansas Soil and Water Conservation Commission, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Geological Survey to develop, maintain, and utilize numerical ground-water flow models to manage and further analyze the ground-water system. The work presented in this report describes the development and calibration of a ground-water flow model representing the Sparta aquifer to simulate observed hydraulic heads, documents major differences in the current Sparta model compared to the previous Sparta model calibrated in the mid-1980's, and presents the results of three hypothetical future withdrawal scenarios. \r\n\r\nThe current Sparta model-a regional scale, three-dimensional numerical ground-water flow model-was constructed and calibrated using available hydrogeologic, hydraulic, and water-use data from 1898 to 1997. Significant changes from the previous model include grid rediscretization of the aquifer, extension of the active model area northward beyond the Cane River Formation facies change, and representation of model boundaries. The current model was calibrated with the aid of parameter estimation, a nonlinear regression technique, combined with trial and error parameter adjustment using a total of 795 observations from 316 wells over 4 different years-1970, 1985, 1990, and 1997. The calibration data set provides broad spatial and temporal coverage of aquifer conditions. Analysis of the residual statistics, spatial distribution of residuals, simulated compared to observed hydrographs, and simulated compared to observed potentiometric surfaces were used to analyze the ability of the calibrated model to simulate aquifer conditions within acceptable error. The calibrated model has a root mean square error of 18 feet for all observations, an improvement of more than 12 feet from the previous model. \r\n\r\nThe current Sparta model was used to predict the effects of three hypothetical withdrawal scenarios on hydraulic heads over the period 1998-2027 with one of those extended indefinitely until equilibrium conditions were attained, or steady state. In scenario 1a, withdrawals representing the time period from 1990 to 1997 was held constant for 30 years from 1998 to 2027. Hydraulic heads in the middle of the cone of depression centered on El Dorado decreased by 10 feet from the 1997 simulation to 222 feet below NGVD of 1929 in 2027. Hydraulic heads in the Pine Bluff cone of depression showed a greater decline from 61 feet below NGVD of 1929 to 78 feet below NGVD of 1929 in the center of the cone. With these same withdrawals extended to steady state (scenario 1b), hydraulic heads in the Pine Bluff cone of depression center declined an 2 Development and Calibration of a Ground-Water Flow Model for the Sparta Aquifer of Southeastern Arkansas and North-Central Louisiana and Simulated Response to Withdrawa","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/wri034132","usgsCitation":"McKee, P.W., and Clark, B.R., 2003, Development and calibration of a ground-water flow model for the Sparta Aquifer of southeastern Arkansas and north-central Louisiana and simulated response to withdrawals, 1998-2027: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 2003-4132, vii, 71 p. : ill., maps (some col.) ; 28 cm. + 1 CD-ROM (4 3/4 in.), https://doi.org/10.3133/wri034132.","productDescription":"vii, 71 p. : ill., maps (some col.) ; 28 cm. + 1 CD-ROM (4 3/4 in.)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":4783,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/wri034132/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":120635,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri_2003_4132.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa7e4b07f02db6672a4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McKee, Paul W.","contributorId":88792,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McKee","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":246859,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Clark, Brian R. 0000-0001-6611-3807 brclark@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6611-3807","contributorId":1502,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clark","given":"Brian","email":"brclark@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":38131,"text":"WMA - Office of Planning and Programming","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":246858,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The sedimentary rocks are nearly flat-lying except where they are adjacent to faults. The carbonate rocks are karstified and the area contains numerous sinkholes, springs, caves, and losing-streams. \r\n\r\nThis map is one of several being produced under the U.S. Geological Survey National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program to provide geologic data applicable to land-use problems in the Ozarks of south-central Missouri. Ongoing and potential industrial and agricultural development in the Ozarks region has presented issues of ground-water quality in karst areas. National Park in this region (Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri) is concerned about the effects of activities in areas outside of their stewardship on the water resources that define the heart of this Park. This task applies geologic mapping and karst investigations to address issues surrounding competing land use in south-central Missouri. This task keeps geologists from the USGS associated with the park and allows the Parks to utilize USGS expertise and aid the NPS on how to effectively use geologic maps for Park management.
