One process cited by many investigators is that uncontrolled dissolving of salt or other soluble evaporites can create or enlarge underground cavities, thereby increasing the span of the unsupported roof to the strength limit of the overlying rocks. Downwarping results when spans are exceeded, or collapse of the undermined roof leads to upward sloping or chimneying of the overburden rocks. If underground space is available for rock debris to collect, the void can migrate to the surface with the end result being surface subsidence or collapse. \r\n\r\nIn North America natural solution subsidence and collapse features in rocks ranging in age from Silurian to the present are found in evaporite terranes in the Great Plains from Saskatchewan in the north to Texas and New Mexico in the south, in the Great Lakes area, and in the southeastern States. Rocks of the Mineral Mountains range from Precambrian to Quaternary in age, but mostly consist of Tertiary granitic rocks. The range lies with the Wah Wah-Tusher mineral belt. Lead, silver, gold, and tungsten have been mined commercially. \r\n\r\nDuring a geochemical survey conducted in the summer of 1978, 30 water samples and 29 stream-sediment samples were collected from the Mineral Mountains area. The interpretation of simple plots of uranium concentrations and the results of a Q-mode factor analysis indicate that potential exists for uranium mineral deposits within the Mineral Mountains. The most favorable areas are in the granitic pluton near its contacts with sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The most likely source of the uranium anomalies is uraninite-bearing epigenic veins along faults and fractures within the pluton. The area encompasses about 940 square miles and has a maximum relief of greater than 1,000 feet. The lowest point (altitude of less than 2,200 feet) is in the Redwater River Valley in the northern part of the area. The highest point (altitude of less than 3,200 feet) is on the Yellowstone-Missouri divide, located in parts of Tps. 18 and 19 N., Rso 49, 50, and 51E., and T. 20 N., Rs. 52 and 53 E. \r\n\r\nSurface exposures in most of the area consist of yellowish or light-colored sandy shales of the Tongue River Member of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation. The coal beds in the Northeast Circle area occur in the lower 500 feet of this member and are persistent in the field. The predominant structural features of the area are the northeast end of the Weldon monocline-fault in Tps. 21 and 22 N., R. 47 E., and a small steep depression near Circle in sec. 10, T. 19 N., R. 48 E. Otherwise, the structure of the area is nearly flat. \r\n\r\nCoal in the Northeast Circle area is composed of six main beds: the S, L1, R, Q, P, and Pust beds, in ascending stratigraphic order. Of these, the S, Pust, and P beds are the thickest. \r\n\r\nThe S bed is more than 20 feet thick in some places, but usually ranges in thickness from 6 to 10 feet. The Pust bed, which is about 430-490 feet above the S bed, is more than 18 feet thick in the upper bench and as much as 9 feet thick in the lower bench. Coal thickness in the P bed varies from 0 to 10.5 feet. The other coal seams in the area are generally less than 5 feet thick. Locally, the rocks have a structural high in T. 12 N., R. 47 E., a structural low in T. 18 N., R. 46 E., and a maximum structural relief of more than 700 ft. \r\n\r\nThe exposed rocks in most of the area are part of the Tongue River Member of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation. The Tongue River Member consists of interbedded siltstone, sandstone, shale, and coal. In ascending order, the five main or principal coal beds are the S, Haughins, R, Q, and Rogers. The S bed ranges in thickness from 0 to 11 ft. The Haughins bed is usually a single bed 2-10 ft thick; in the southern part of the area, it splits into two benches which have a total thickness of 12 ft. The R bed is thin in most of the area, but in the northern part it attains a thickness of 9 ft.. The Q bed occurs at about the same horizon as the Rogers bed, but the drilling control and surface mapping are insufficient for correlation. The conceptual framework for the analysis is suggested by the economic theory of production. The minimum flow of the River and the percentage of the total waste inflow receiving nitrification are considered to be two variable inputs to be used in the production of a given minimum concentration of DO in the River. Each of the inputs has a cost: the loss of dependable peak hydroelectric generating capacity at Buford Dam associated with flow augmentation and the cost associated with nitrification of wastes. The least-cost combination of minimum flow and waste treatment to achieve a prescribed minimum DO concentration is identified.</p><p>Results indicate that, in some instances, the waste assimilative capacity of the Chattahoochee River can be substituted for increased waste treatment with the associated savings in waste treatment costs more than offsetting the benefits foregone due to the loss of peak generating capacity at Buford Dam. The sensitivity of the results to the estimates of the cost of replacing peak generating capacity is examined. It is also demonstrated that a flexible approach to the management of DO in the Chattahoochee River may be much more cost-effective than a more rigid, institutional approach wherein constraints are P. Lee","docAbstract":"<p>During 1975, the Pacific-Arctic Branch of the Office of Marine Geology installed a seismic system onboard the USGS vessel S.P. Lee. The major components of the system include a Bolt 5 air gun array, a 2400 meter SEI streamer, and a GUS high density recording system. Various high resolution/single channel seismic systems are also onboard. From 1975 to 1978 several short \"test cruises\" were conducted to determine some of the characteristics of, and to calibrate these various systems.
