These puzzle pieces are continuously moving, slowly straining the faults in between. That strain is then eventually released in earthquakes. The innovative Southern California Integrated GPS Network (SCIGN) tracks the motions of these pieces over most of southern California with unprecedented precision. This new network greatly improves the ability to assess seismic hazards and quickly measure the larger displacements that occur during and immediatelyafter earthquakes.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/fs06901","usgsCitation":"Hudnut, K., and King, N., 2001, SCIGN; new Southern California GPS network advances the study of earthquakes (Online version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 069-01, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs06901.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":119232,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_069_01.bmp"},{"id":2551,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2001/fs069-01/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Online version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66caa3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hudnut, Ken","contributorId":44590,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hudnut","given":"Ken","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203818,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"King, Nancy","contributorId":41478,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"King","given":"Nancy","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203817,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

If you learn to read today's landscape, you can see the fascinating history it records. The features of Cape Cod, from the ponds and cranberry bogs to the gently sloping sandy uplands and rocky, irregular hills to the beaches, result from the glacial processes that built the cape and the marine processes that still shape it.  Many geologists since the late 19th century have contributed to telling this story. The findings show that for both urban and agricultural areas, nonpoint chemical contamination is an issue. Much work still needs to be done in urban areas with point source contamination as well, including infrastructure improvements. Appreciable improvements in overall water quality, however, will depend upon effective management of point and nonpoint sources. The findings show that nonpoint chemical contamination is an agricultural and urban issue. Whereas a lot of work still needs to be pursued with point source contamination and infrastructure improvements in urban areas (such as related to combined and sanitary sewer overflows), appreciable improvements in water quality also will depend upon management of nonpoint sources. The NAWQA findings also show that water-quality conditions and aquatic health reflect a complex combination of land and chemical use, land-management practices, population density and watershed development, and natural features, such as soils, geology, hydrology, and climate. Contaminant concentrations vary from season to season and from watershed to watershed. Even among seemingly similar land uses and sources of contamination, different areas can have very different degrees of vulnerability and, therefore, have different rates at which improved treatment or management can lead to water-quality improvements.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/fs04701","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 2001, Selected findings and current perspectives on urban and agricultural water quality by the National Water-Quality Assessment Program: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 047-01, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs04701.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":2544,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/FS/fs-047-01/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":123896,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_047_01.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dee4b07f02db5e318b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":529234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Diazinon was specifically studied in the Lafayette Creek watershed, a residential area in northeastern Tallahassee, Fla. Diazinon and other pesticides applied directly to the soil or grass can be washed off into nearby storm drains, ditches, streams, and lakes. Heavy rainstorms can wash substantial amounts of chemicals into streams and lakes, including diazinon that was applied several weeks earlier. Sampling streams during rainstorms for water quality can sometimes provide clues about how pesticides and other contaminants are transported to surface water. Diazinon was detected in 92% of all samples collected from Lafayette Creek and it was detected throughout the year during the sampling period. However, concentrations were low (0.002 to 0.28 micrograms per liter) and do not pose a risk to human health. About 20% of the samples exceeded the aquatic-life criterion--a guideline that establishes the maximum acceptable level of concentrations of pesticides for protecting aquatic life.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/fs14300","usgsCitation":"Berndt, M., and Hatzell, H.H., 2001, Does diazinon pose a threat to a neighborhood stream in Tallahassee, Florida?: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 143-00, 1 folded sheet ([4] p.) : col. ill., col. maps ; 28 cm. col. ill., col. maps, https://doi.org/10.3133/fs14300.","productDescription":"1 folded sheet ([4] p.) : col. ill., col. maps ; 28 cm. col. ill., col. maps","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":665,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://fl.water.usgs.gov/Abstracts/fs143_00_berndt.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":123913,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0143/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31941,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2000/0143/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db63614c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Berndt, Marian P.","contributorId":45296,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Berndt","given":"Marian P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":150626,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hatzell, Hilda H.","contributorId":83106,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hatzell","given":"Hilda","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":150627,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

These data constitute a valuable database for developing an improved understanding of the water resources of the State. Beginning with the 1985 water year and continuing through 1993, these data were published in a report series entitled ?Water Resources Data for California, Volume 5. Ground-Water Data.? Prior to the introduction of this series, historical ground-water information was published in U.S. Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers.\r\n\r\nIn 1994, the Volume 5 Ground-Water Data report was discontinued, but data continue to be available in our databases. Of these 130 provinces, 23 are in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean area (fig. 1). The assessed provinces range from established petroleum provinces with long histories of production such as the Maracaibo Basin to frontier provinces with little or no petroleum production such as the Guyana-Suriname Basin. Not all provinces with historic production or potential production were assessed for the USGS 2000 Assessment. At present we are assessing many of the remaining oil and gas provinces in Central and South America. In each province we (1) geologically defined total petroleum systems, (2) defined assessment units within total petroleum systems, and (3) assessed the volume of undiscovered conventional oil and gas in each assessment unit.
