Ground-water contamination by DIMP from the disposal of wastes into unlined surface ponds at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal occurred from 1952 to 1956. A digital-transport model was used to determine the effects on ground-water movement and on DIMP concentrations in the ground water of a bentonite barrier in the aquifer near the northern boundary of the arsenal. The transport model is based on an iterative-alternating- direction-implicit mathematical solution of the ground-water-flow equation coupled with a method-of-characteristics solution of the solute-transport equation. The model assumes conservative (nonreactive) transient transport of DIMP and steady-state ground-water flow.</p><p>In the model simulations, a bentonite barrier was assumed that was impermeable and penetrated the entire saturated thickness of the aquifer. Ground water intercepted by the barrier was assumed to be pumped by wells located south (upgra-dient) of the barrier, to be treated to remove DIMP, and to be recharged by pits or wells to the aquifer north (downgradient) of the barrier. The amount of DIMP transported across the northern boundary of the arsenal was substantially reduced by a ground-water-barrier system of this type. For a 1,500-foot-long bentonite barrier located along the northern boundary of the arsenal near D Street, about 50 percent of the DIMP that would otherwise cross the boundary would be intercepted by the barrier. This barrier configuration and location were proposed by the U.S. Army. Of the ground water with DIMP concentrations greater than 500 micro- grams per liter, the safe DIMP-concentration level determined by the U.S. Army, about 72 percent would be intercepted by the barrier system. The amount of DIMP underflow intercepted may be increased to 65 percent by doubling the pumpage, or to 73 percent by doubling the length of the barrier.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79676","usgsCitation":"Warner, J.W., 1979, Digital-transport model study of Diisopropylmethylphosphonate (DIMP) ground-water contamination at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-676, iv, 39 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79676.","productDescription":"iv, 39 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":431102,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0676/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":145370,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0676/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Rocky Mountain Arsenal","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.90350277918196,\n              39.79818526609469\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.77217640835627,\n              39.79820512226806\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.77179948807711,\n              39.87074264337295\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.86486845062375,\n              39.87059800145718\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.90350277918196,\n              39.83770284193764\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.90350277918196,\n              39.79818526609469\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64acd1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Warner, James W.","contributorId":106119,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Warner","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163387,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A closed pipe was driven through the buried waste, and a removable point withdrawn. The hole was then advanced by alternately pushing a coring device, then driving an inner casing to the depth reached by the coring device and cleaning out cuttings from within the casing. The effectiveness of the technique was limited by inability to predict the location of impenetrable objects within the waste in some parts of the burial ground and difficulty in detecting when the end of the pipe first penetrated undisturbed material beneath the trench floor. Extensive channel restoration was required to contain expected normal spring flows. Six principal sites were established on the 17-mile reach of the river to study sediment transport and channel change during 1977-78. During April 1 to September 30, 1977, total water discharge at Teton Island bridge was 97,530 acre-feet; 4,360 tons of total sediment were transported. Total water discharge, April 1 to September 30, 1978, was 191,940 acre-feet; 10,680 tons of total sediment were transported. Analyses of data indicated several trends of erosion and deposition. Minimal channel change in the upper 7 miles of the river indicated equilibrium may temporarily exist between hydraulic-flow properties and channel shape. Streambed profiles indicated little change in streambed elevations. Erosional tonnage at mid-study reaches was 4,260 tons. One-half mile downstream, an increase of 4,150 tons of suspended and 1,050 tons of bedload sediment probably was partly derived from upstream bank erosion. An estimated 5,870 tons was deposited within the next subreach downstream. Virtually the entire bedload was redeposited before the last subreach, 4.4 miles downstream measured bedload was 91 tons. Suspended-sediment discharge transported past the last site was 16,470 tons. Lateral erosion and deposition in the lower 10 miles of the river indicate that subreaches now shortened by manmade channel alinements may begin to meander. Future deposition of coarse material at upstream gravel and concrete impoundments may trigger instability in the entire river. Withdrawal of 85,000 acre-feet per year as required by the Ak-Chin water-supply act--Public Law 95-328--will greatly deplete the amount of water in storage and may cause land subsidence in the areas. Study concurrent with well-field development will enable design changes to minimize pumping costs , water-level declines, movement of poor-quality water into the well fields, and potential land subsidence and associated earth fissures. Surface and bore-hole geophysical testing, aquifer tests, and the development of simulative mathematical models will accomplish these goals and permit quantitative evaluations of the potential deleterious effects resulting from development of the water supply. The potentiometric surface of the Gordo aquifer slopes generally to the west away from the outcrop area and it is depressed generally by large ground-water withdrawals in the Tupelo and Columbus areas. Historically, water levels in or near the outcrop of the Gordo aquifer have shown little or no long-term changes. Heavy withdrawals from the downdip area have caused long-term water-level declines of 1 to 2 feet per year in much of the confined part of the aquifer. Water-level decline in one observation well in Tupelo has averaged about 5 feet per year since 1966. The gold belt coincides with a major zone of faulting, shearing, and alteration. The fault zone and most of the gold mines occur within a belt of layered metavolcanic and metavolcaniclastic rocks that is situated between a continuous belt of gneissic rocks to the west and a discontinuous belt of gneissic rocks to the east. Layered rocks are slightly to highly metamorphosed andesitic to dacitic volcanic rocks intercalated with volcaniclastic sediments. Massive volcanic rocks predominate in the southern and very northern parts of the belt whereas medium- to fine-grained sedimentary rocks and volcaniclastic rocks, in part younger than the massive volcanic rocks, predominate in the central portions. \r\n\r\nThere are five geographic groups of ancient gold mines in the belt, each of which contain deposits that are probably genetically related and are typical of that group. These deposits are hydrothermal in nature and are in or next to quartz veins, quartz breccia zones, or quartz stringer zones. A few of the deposits are spatially related to felsic dikes or small bodies of gabbro but most are in quartz veins of regional systems. \r\n\r\nIn order to facilitate evaluation of individual deposits, a model was developed to determine the potential resource of each deposit. The model was developed from historical data and utilizes geologic parameters and analyses of waste dump samples to give an optimum potential resource tonnage and grade. Although these are only estimates based upon present exposures and limited analytical data, the results indicate that the deposits in the gold belt have limited economic potential. A majority of the prospects evaluated are small deposits, each estimated to contain less than 50,000 tons of gold ore. Twelve of the prospects are estimated to contain deposits ranging from 50,000 to 400,000 tons of ore at grades ranging from 7 to 32 grams per ton (g/t).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791519","usgsCitation":"Worl, R., 1979, The Jabal Ishmas-Wadi Tathlith gold belt, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1519, ii, 112 p., 4 over-size sheets ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791519.","productDescription":"ii, 112 p., 4 over-size sheets ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145774,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1519/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39624,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1519/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39625,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1519/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39626,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1519/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39627,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1519/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39628,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1519/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0de4b07f02db5fd171","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Worl, Ronald G.","contributorId":87143,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Worl","given":"Ronald G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163643,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
